“Most Amazing Views, Exceptional Service & Outstanding Value - You MUST stay here!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 April 2009

We stayed in the African Room for 3 nights in early April and couldn't have been more delighted that we chose this guest house. It exceeded all our expectations and was far bigger and more luxious than their site might suggest.

The negative review on this site I feel is wholly unfair and unwarranted and might put some guests off staying at this amazing place. Firstly, it is hardly the fault of the guesthouse that reviewer found the road network confusing (and the owner provides clear directions to find the guesthouse easily), secondly they do provide you with information on when breakfast is in a letter placed in your room when you arrive, thirdly, the staff are very friendly and helpful at all times and fourthly the owners are most helpful at answering any questions you might have & always came back to us quickly if they weren't available on every occasion we may have wanted to speak to them. Furthermore, the appeal of this guesthouse is surely the fact it is the highest house in Camps Bay, thus has the best views, so I would have thought it fairly obvious it would not be within easy walking distance of the beach.

We stayed at more than 8 guest houses during our whole trip and this was our favourite. We felt secure at all times, found the staff to be attentive when necessary but not overly imposing and the rooms were exeptionally clean and contained everything you could possibly need. The best part was the view, mountains sitting behind your room, the sea in sprawlled out in front, stunning panoramic views over the bay and your own private jacuzzi from which you could relax watching the sun set over the ocean.

Total Tranquility, whilst being a home away from home. If you want to stay in Camps Bay, enjoy peace and quiet and beautiful views We would highly recommend this guesthouse!!

It's important to say that this place is not all bad. The view is great and the food is OK.

But the bottom line is that any system which grades this at 5*s (as the SA Authority seems to have done) is just not credible: it is a perfectly OK 2* place, perhaps with some elements of 3*s.

The staff have no real idea of what service means. They are not unpleasant, but they don't really seem to have any idea what to do, and they are never there when you want to go and find them. And you will need to be going to find them quite a lot, because a lot of things seem to break! From air conditioning that doesn't work, to shutter/doors not that don't close, various little things don't work. The rooms have a "safe" but although it looks like one, if the lock on its door is broken, and it isn't bolted to the wall (you could just take it off the shelf) is this really a safe....

Geoffrey has no real idea. He is quite pleasant, but ask yourself, in a "5 star" place do you really expect to have to spend 5 minutes explaining the concept of "still" and "sparkling" water? And perhaps it would be good if you could get some of either.

The "self catering" facilities are not really self catering: you could certainly boil the kettle and make some toast fine, but if you were actually think of doing some self catering, you would be very disappointed. A sink and some crockery is not really self catering.

And I don't understand why they don't have some information in the room on the basics, like what time breakfast is, and that kind of thing. Pretty much every hotel I have ever stayed in round the world has this.

The view is great and definitely a high point - but this is because it is half way up the mountain, miles from anywhere and at the end of an enormous and extremely confusing road system above Camps Bay. If you were planning to go to Camps Bay to enjoy the beach, it is the best part of an hour's walk to the beach. And generally, if you don't have a car, then this is definitely not the place to go to.

It's perfectly clean and pleasant enough. But other places we stayed in SA which had 5 *s on the same grading system were genuinely luxurious. The idea that this place is in the same category is just silly, I'm afraid.

We recently stayed at the Bateleurs Theresa Guesthouse 2 times over our vacation to South Africa (3 nights at the start and 3 nights at the end of our trip).

Over our total 23 day vacation to SA we stayed at 9 different guesthouses throughout the country.

This place was our favorite for a number of reasons:
- the most outstanding viewpoint from our room and deck area(African Room)
- privacy (each room has their own area and there are only 3 rooms I think in the whole facility...)
- comfort and attention to detail (everything you would expect from a top place)
- the best breakfast chef on the planet (Jeffrey).
- gracious and friendly hosts (Zonia & Jasper).

If you want to treat yourself to a stay in Camps Bay this place is highly recommended.

The Venters know what it takes to make it as good as it gets! Apart from the inspirational setting with a spectacular view across Camps Bay in Cape Town, the people looking after you are highly professional. Even the maitre-d, Geoffrey, is a delight to meet with impeccable manners. Be quick be nimble as it only has 3 luxury rooms...Jennifer&GarethBaines, Johannesburg,RSA.

Bateleurs is in a fabulous location with views over the ocean, the beach, table mountain and other wonderful scenery. The accommodation was luxurious and comfortable with great style and personal touches in the design of the room. The dining room was beautifully set out for breakfast in the morning and the food was excellent with more than enough to satisfy the largest of appetites.

We only had a 2 night stay on our way back to the UK after a safari in Botswana at the end of August and the weather wasn't good enough to enjoy the hot tub or sunset on the terrace but we were given a very warm welcome and would love to have the opportunity to return for a longer stay.

The guesthouse is within easy reach of the airport and fairly easy to find. A street map of Camps Bay which we found on the internet was helpful for the last stretch of the journey.

  • Liked — Good location, very comfortable, fantastic breakfasts
  • Disliked — It helps to have a local sreet map to find it.

When you arrive at The Bateleurs, the first thing that strikes you is the view. The Bateleurs is located on the highest road of Camps Bay, in a dead end, at the border of the national park : gorgeous view both on the sea and the mountains.

We were welcomed by Jasper and Zonia who are extremely welcoming people and who made their best so that we feel comfortable and our stay remains memorable (even giving us medicines when we were not feeling well).
Jeffrey, the home manager was also very nice and prepared excellent and nicely arranged breakfasts.

I have already recommanded the Bateleurs to friends planning to go to South Africa for christmas holidays!!!

This has to be one of the most beautiful, comfortable Bed and Breakfast we have ever stayed in. And, we have stayed in quite a few. Traveling is our passion. From the most comfortable bed, to the lovely scrumptious breakfast, and the grand hospitality that we received, this is a perfect travel destination for anyone .If you like the view of the ocean, and the feel of being in the mountains at the same time, this is the place for you. The view is spectacular.
Jasper and Zonie were the perfect hosts, and we really enjoyed meeting and talking with their chef, Geoffrey. We are already talking about our next trip to South Africa and another stay in Camps Bay, and we will definitely stay at the Bateleur. This is one accommodation that is an absolute must for a delightful time.
