“Poor atmosphere”
Reviewed 1 December 2012

The bar was a huge disappointment in terms of atmosphere.
It is small. Piped * pop * music and for me, when I compare this bar to that of other colonial hotels such as Raffles in Singapore, it is not in keeping with the colonial aspect of the property.
Indeed, there is a piano just outside the bar, and felt that in keeping with the colonial aspect, there should have been a pianist tinkling away.

It's a bar. Could be any hotel bar. Drinks were ok. Service was good.
There is an outdoor seating area on the terrace, mostly occupied by smokers. We are smokers and decided we would just pop out to smoke since we noticed there were cockroaches
around the tables, it was night and didn't quite fancy it.

Observed a gent order a bottle of Dom Perignon for his * lady friend * ( a good 50 years younger than him ). Nothing wrong there, but once they finished and were merry when they arrived, one of the waiters attempted to open a second bottle when the first was finished despite them not ordering one and I felt this was a cheap attempt to get someone who was already merry, to spend an absolute fortune on a second bottle - which they clearly pushed away.

We went to the Planet Bar for after dinner drinks. Glad we did it - but would not make a special trip to the hotel to simply drink there, unless you wanted to view the hotel.

“Don't miss this bar on the way to the Planet Restaurant”
Reviewed 1 July 2012

This trendy bar in the legendary Mount Nelson Hotel is a great stop for a pre-dinner drink or just a nice glass of wine on any day.

“Classy Place”
Reviewed 12 March 2012

The planet bar is situated inside of the famous 5* Mount Nelson Hotel. The bar itself , is beautiful with a touch of class! Always good for a special occasion - and more noticibly known for its variety of French Champagnes, which is sold by the glass or by the bottle. In winter they have a fire - which makes for a romantic evening! This is a more formal bar , so the appropriate dress code is applicable! A lot of international celebs are sometimes seen here, having a drink.!

“Escape to calm!”
Reviewed 20 February 2012

Went there for a look and see and to find somewhere to nibble on something quick. It is old world charm galore! Felt like the Raffles in Singapore, step back into time. Everything from the snob young girl at reception to the huge vases of roses and oriental lilies, I was gobsmacked !! Loved it!! The Planet Bar did not disappoint. Great service. Beautiful drinks. Had a sample platter and some springbok mini sausages. Well presented. Smiles all around. The place to people watch. Here is money. Old money. Younger wives with older men. Lots older. The accents to match. Not a crease in a shirt in sight.
I could do though (again my gripe about Cape Town service) without the hysterical barman who is carrying on likes headless chook!! Then he stirs the cocktails with a straw and sips on it after he pulls it out???!!! Be calm service staff and keep your banter, moans, gripes etc...out of the sight of customers.

“Calm in chaos”
Reviewed 10 November 2011

A short walk away from the frantic traffic, in the almost parodically gracious Mount Nelson, is this calm refuge. Well, it can get pretty hectic on a Friday evening, but generally there's a seat available, and immediate service. There are two rooms, the inner one more intimate, the outer offering a view of the garden, but filtered through a lot of cigarette smoke, this being the smoking section. Drinks are not cheap, but expertly served, and accompanied by complimentray snacks that are really good, not just peanuts and crisps. A good place to go after a show of before a dinner. with plenty of parking.
