Having stayed mostly at guest houses in Cape Town over the years, I wanted to try something different and opted for the One and Only. It was just ok, at a stretch. The location frankly did not suit me, as I don't care for the wharf area and it is really in no mans land, relatively isolated from everything, certainly by foot. The service was spotty and in the restaurants poor to awful ( Nobu). I had two massages in the spa, the first very good, the second abysmal. The view of Table Mountain from my room was lovely, but is there a bad view in Cape Town? Well yes, probably the island rooms - I can't imagine the sense of confinement stuck in one of those. The long and the short, this is just an expensive hotel that falls way short of the elegant resort it's trying to be or charging for. Back to the guest houses for me!

Simply spectacular hotel in an amazing location. The staff and the facilities are out of this world. Well worth the money.

Today was my 3rd visit to the One&Only. I have held off doing a tripadvisor as I felt sorry for them in this tough economic climate.

But I cant hold off anymore in expressing my disappointment in the poor service, poor quality of food and complete lack of management. After all I am paying my hard-earned money for a service which I should be happy with.

It was the second time we have taken a large party of people for afternoon-tea. We actually phoned ahead and spoke to the manager to say it was a special occasion (a birthday) and we wanted to make sure we where looked after as the previous visit was a disaster.

The afternoon tea looks good but is unfortunately just sugar coated. The sandwiches are inedible and thick as door-steps. They also dont use butter which makes them very dry. We had to ask for some sandwiches to be made as they only had chicken on the afternoon tea buffet. They did oblige us by making some, but they where pretty inedible, not dainty and delicate like afternoon-tea sandwiches should be. So if you are a vegetarian and you dont want too much sugar you have a problem.

The cakes are very sickly and designed so that you cant eat a lot of them before you feel ill. Many of them also look very gelatinous. The sponge tarts with fruit where dry. The small vegetarian quiches where also pretty awful. The eclairs not very exciting. The marble cake covered with hard sugar. There is no jam or cream available with the scones. Whoever heard of scones without jam and cream?

Onto the service. The front desk area appears to have plenty of management in suits, but the lounge doesn't have any management at all. Basically its a headless chicken situation.

Our waitress was really terrible. We started off by having a massive argument with her about the ala-carte menu. Some of the party didnt want the afternoon tea. She gave us two menus one with sandwiches and the 2nd without. When we ordered a sandwich off the menu she told us we had the wrong menu and they didnt do them anymore. When we insisted she checked if the chef could make a basic toasted cheese sandwich she said she would check and come back to us. She never returned, until when we had paid the bill and she cleared the table. We also argued with her when she said they only had tea cups for people who are right handed. The other waiter bought us the right cup for lefties.

The only thing which was good about our visit was the fish cakes we ordered off the menu. Well priced at R45. But they took over an hour to come....slightly annoying when everyone else is busy eating afternoon-tea.

If the afternoon tea is a reflection of the hotel, I would be very worried about sampling the other services of the hotel i.e the accommodation.

The hotel's owners should dress up in disguise one day and go for afternoon-tea, they will be shocked.

Third time lucky...both previous times we stayed here, we had a few glitches. However, they seemed to have ironed them out. For her 15th birthday we treated our daughter and 7 close friends to a night here. On arrival they were greeted with welcome drinks and personally shown to their two connecting rooms, which had macaroons and sparkling grape juice waiting for them. The fabulous location and facilities mean is doesn't matter what the weather does...on the cloudy afternoon they swam in the wonderful heated pool followed by a sauna and jacuzzi, after which they returned to their luxurious rooms to jazz themselves up and we all walked to the Waterfront for dinner. To their delight when they returned, their rooms were lit by candles with rose petals on the beds and in bathroom and a gorgeous happy birthday chocolate platter. All our rooms faced the mountain, yacht basin, island and the canal which saw a number of 'stand-up' paddlers . Breakfast the next morning was a generous affair, followed by another quick jacuzzi session, before sadly leaving. The staff were all highly professional and accommodating at all times. Tip top condition rooms with luxurious amenities make this hotel a top treat...a mini-holiday even for 1 night. Highly recommended.

As someone that thinks that 5 Star hotels are not worth it, this is the exception to the rule. Awesome from start to finish. You can go for the weekend and not even leave the hotel. Book a room in the main hotel< mountain facing, give the island a miss if you want the view. greta for kids and letting parents chill.

Fabulous stay here in April 2012.
Wonderful welcome, - having arrived early morning our room was made immediately available to us.What a good choice we made regarding an island room especially as we were staying for 8 nights. it was exceptionally comfortable, good quality furniture/bedding/ toiletries.
I loved the spaciousness of the property, the gardens and pool area were impeccably maintained.
The breakfasts were of such high quality, including a waiter served 'la a carte' menu at no extra cost.(eggs benedict, smoked salmon, oysters, champagne, etc).
Do make use of the concierge they were so helpful - as were all of the hotel front staff.
Its also in a perfect location just minutes away from the harbour and many excellent restaurants(try Sevruga, Belthazar, Den Anker or take a taxi into town for an Indian at Bukhara)
For a high level of service and some pampering just choose it, you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: Table Mountain view rooms in the hotel were in the shade. if you choose an Island room ask for one...

Room Tip: Our room faced Table Mountain which is an incredible view.
