Good food - not top notch but with the great staff, entertainment and drumming session this was an experience we all enjoyed. Would recommend to visitors.

We got to taste a variety of local foods on a fixed price menu, and the food was quite good. The atmosphere was very fun, with African dancing and singing entertainment throughout the meal. Our family enjoyed the overall experience.

Went to Gold to celebrate a friends birthday and with the tag line "opulent African cuisine" and the R400 set meal price tag, we were all excited about the prospect of African-inspired fine dining as well as the various entertainment options advertised.

Although the initial Djembe drumming was fun (despite a rather tetchy instructor), the food was a complete let down with small, over-cooked dishes of things that were numbered to allow for a "one each" policy.
I'd like to say that the lack of food was a problem but after tasting the meagre quota of (mightily tough) little kebabs and (long-time dead & frozen) prawns served with (frozen) florets of cauliflower and broccoli, it wasn't really particularly more-ish.

The main course was some strips of chicken in a sloppy sauce that - along wih everything else- was plonked down on the table in small bowls for us to dish ourselves. It had the same frozen-vibe and although perfectly edible, was a long way off the "opulent African cuisine" tag promised in the literature.

The entertainment portion of the evening was ok, and we all thought the performers were very good. If we weren't locals, we might have thought that this was a nice genuinely South African element to the evening- most of the other guests were foreigners so seemed oblivious to the mish-mash of tenuously African links that the acts were based on.

Basically, the standard of food really lets this experience down - for R400 pp without wine (as anyone earning in Rands can tell you, no small sum) Gold would need to go much more upmarket and invest in decent ingredients, tastier dishes and buck up their presentation. Otherwise there's plenty of other "African" eateries that outstrip this by a mile (moyo

Dear reviewer

Thank you for posting your feedback and comments on TripAdvisor. We welcome all comments, good and negative. However, there are some inaccuracies in your feedback that I would like to correct. The meal price is not R400pp. It is R275pp for our set menu and live entertainment. Djembe drumming is an optional extra and is R95pp. We do not have frozen food on our premises and make a huge effort to serve fresh and organic at all times – both our venison, beef and chicken is delivered fresh and sourced from organic farms. I am happy to provide you with my suppliers' details. Our vegetables are definitely not frozen either! So I am sorry that you did not have the experience that you were hoping for or expecting so please contact me directly to arrange for a complimentary tasting of our new menu in a months time. Went to gold on our last night in Cape Town to experience some African food and entertainment .
We weren't disappointed . The drumming lessons start at 6.30 pm . They go for half an hour very enjoyable . The teacher has agree sense of humour for those of us who can't keep time . Then went on a safari with a 12 course tasting meal with food from all parts of Africa . The wait staff where very friendly and efficient in describing the food and where it had originated from . Throughout the evening there was traditional musical entertainment . At the end of the evening all the staff including chiefs , and kitchen staff joined in the entertainment for about 30 min to finish a great night
