Rockwell All Suite Hotel
Ranked #60 of 110 Hotels in Cape Town
Reviewed 10 August 2011

This hotel was recommended to us by "Winners", when I was looking for a family-sized follow-up week to an international education conference we attended in Cape Town in July. This is a seven floor venue with a mix of longterm apartment renters and suite-hotel-guests, in a pleasant, clean, secure and friendly environment. It is well-located in proximity to the new Cape Town Conference Centre, and five minutes from each of the the popular Victoria and Alfred Waterfront area and the gardens linking Parliament and Museums. It is in a renovated older district, with nearby theatre, shopping, and restaurants. A "Pick and Pay" and well-stocked "SPAR" are only steps from the the hotel, and provide a great selection for full benefit of the kitchen area of the suite which is very clean, with modern appliances and a set of good dishes, cutlery, glassware and cookware.

We had a two -bedroom suite which included a large living-kitchen area, easy for either family activities or to entertain guests. There was a good size balcony with access from the living area and main bedroom, with good security bolts. The master bedroom was a good size, with large en-suite including both shower stall and bath.; The second bedroom was small, but also had en-suite with bath and both had good cupboard space. There was also a third "powder room" with toilet and sink, and the rooms were well laid out. Beds and good pillow selection were comfortable, and the heating/cooling system works well with individual room controls. The only reason I marked the "sleep quality" down one notch, is recognition of the lively weekend evenings on Prestwich Streets that bring some noise into the main bedroom. However, the second bedroom is on the side of an indoor court are, and is quiet. I expect the "dockyard" side of the building may be quieter as well.

It is a great value for cost . In addition to the suite amenities noted above, there is a very good buffet breakfast (with freshly cooked oatmeal on request), plus a spa, indoor pool, small travel desk to arrange tours and flexible and prompt excellent room cleaning. There is "house transport" whether around town or to the airport which ranges from complimentary to the Waterfront or short hopes, to reasonable. Taxis are quickly available as well and can be arranged by the hotel. Hotel staff are competent, friendly and sincere, and the hotel is small enough to be known by name by all . There is also an small in-house restaurant, room service menue to 10 lpm, and underground parking (additional 50 rand), and conference faciltiies for up to 60 guests.

The configuration of the Rockwell is fascinating, as the suites centre around 7 floors of what is essentially a courtyard, with safe, wide and bright, plant-decorated "walkways" under a large skylight.

Our room rate for the two bedroom suite was less than $200 Canadian including breakfast and we were delighted with the value for downtown Cape Town.

I will try and add some photos, but don't always have luck with my transfer!

Room Tip: We liked the side that sweeps from Table Mountain to Signal Hill, but some may prefer the dockyard...

We stayed at the Rockwell Cape Town for 3 nights in June and had a fabulous time.
The apartments are clean and well maintained and the security is excellent. It is very central and we walked to the Greenpoint Stadium and the V&A Waterfront. The breakfast we had every morning was excellent and the staff was friendly and really helpful. We will certainly book there again and can recommend this hotel, especially if you don't want to eat at a restaurant every meal while you're on holiday. The kitchen is well equipped and makes it a pleasure to prepare your own meals.

We stayed 9 nights at the Rockwell at an unbeatable price. The rooms have full kitchens with plenty of pots/pans and utensils. Their cleaning staff comes and does your dishes on a daily basis, which was an added bonus. The rooms are very spacious (separate room for the bedroom) and the TV had terrific movie channels. Whenever we needed anything, the staff was highly receptive and came and helped us both with our heater and our internet. You are allowed a certain amount of internet a day, but it is quite generous and we never exceeded the daily allowances. The process of obtaining internet passwords was a bit of a hassle, and the connection was spotty at times, but overall it enhanced our stay greatly. The view was terrific, a balcony that looked out onto Lion's Head and Table Mountain. The location is perfect, a short drive/walk from the downtown area but not in the center of it, and directly across the street from a grocery store, coffee shop, and gas station. The hotel also provides breakfast from their restaurant, but since this did not come with our room, we only took advantage of it once for an extra charge. The breakfast was good, but not a highlight.

There was a small fee for parking, about 8 US Dollars a day, but it was so convenient to have a safe place to keep the car for our stay. There was also a full-time concierge in the lobby. There is a gym and pool, which were very convenient, although pretty small, enough to run on the treadmill and lift light weights. We booked through Expedia and got 50% off because we had a long stay and it was the off-season. Ask for a room on a higher floor for the best views.

We definitely recommend staying at the Rockwell, the rooms were so clean and comfortable. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.

The Rockwell is very new with everything you need for a self-contained stay including a balcony with a distant view of Table Bay. The location is great with the waterfront and most city attractions in walking distance. Lots of nearby restaurants and an excellent supermarket/deli/wine store across the street. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

The room was spacious and hotel offers unobstructed table mountain views from a location within easy walk of the waterfront, across from great shopping and next door to fun and funky nightlife. Unfortunately the party starts on Tuesday which means sleepless nights weekdays AND weekends.

The hotel offers 30 min of free internet per day which was a plus. As others have posted it's tricky to connect to and a bit slow, plus you have to remember to request access each day.

Contrary to other internet rumors, we did not have a washing machine in our room and the hotel charges for laundry by piece. We saw other rooms that were similarly washing machine free, but also completely differently outfitted, and concluded that your stay depends heavily on the room you're assigned, which is a cr@pshoot.

Note that the hotel is currently undergoing some sort of construction which also impacted our stay.

Otherwise it's a beautiful, light and airy facility that with additional investment - in things like glass soundproofing, a consistent water heater to moderate showers that fluctuated between scalding and ice cold, and staff training on consistent housekeeping and what to see/do/buy in Cape Town - can go from ok to good and possibly to great.

That said, if you have a family or can get a heavily (!) discounted rate, take it! The neighborhood is really great.

The Rockwell Hotel is located in the city center. Terrific location. Across the street there’s the Cape Quarter where there are shops, cafes & a supermarket. A couple of blocks away, there’s a nice patisserie that serves yummy sandwiches and a colorful establishment called Beefcakes. You can walk to the VA Waterfront in about 15 minutes. The hotel lobby has a large open space w/high ceilings & a bar. The hotel décor has a clean modern, almost ship-like interior. There’s a glass ceiling and plenty of sunlight to create a sense of open space and light – no dark, narrow hallways here.

All the rooms are called suites – basically a living room, balcony, kitchenette, bathroom & bedroom. Much of our room didn’t have carpeting, which was a plus. The room was fairly clean. Just don’t slide your hands between the sofa cushions – I found a lot of crumbs & other stuff. I’m nitpicking here but I like to be thorough.

The living room was spacious. The décor was okay. Nothing great. Kitchenette had a microwave, stovetop oven, and mini fridge, sink. All new. The bedroom was a bit tiny & the shelving in the closets kept collapsing due to missing pieces. Not cool. Overall, okay.

The worst part of the suite was the bathroom. The shower/bathtub had a glass partition that extends halfway & swings in both directions. When you took a shower, the water would spray against the glass and run off the side, creating a significant puddle by the toilet. After a couple of showers, you had a small pond & several soaked towels. The maid service did a fine job cleaning up & picking up stuff. However, at times they didn’t replenish the soap or towels. After a few days, we asked the front desk for more soap, shampoo & towels. Eventually the maids delivered on the goods but only minor haranguing.

Breakfast was a self-serve buffet of fruit, bread, yogurt, juice, coffee, eggs, bacon, etc. The dining staff was wonderful and eager to help. There’s a tiny gym & an indoor lap pool.

If you rely on the Internet while on holiday or want to watch television, great patience is required. Both are complicated and time-consuming processes at the Rockwell.

One other odd aspect of the Rockwell: they only give you one key per room, even if you are a couple. Sounds benign until you realize that it’s impossible to use the elevator or stairs without that key. So one must either institute prodigious coordination to always be in the same place at the same time, or plead with the front desk for a second key. It usually takes a couple of days to get one.

Overall, we had a pleasant ten-day stay at the hotel. The Rockwell has potential.

Loved staying at the Rockwell. Great location and within easy walking distance to many shops and restaurants. Being a native Capetonian i found this place very convenient.

Parking is safe and secure as well as access to the hotel floors. Reception was good, not overly friendly but nice enough.

Room was equipped fully for self catering, although i didnt need it much. Can get noisy on Thursday evenings when clubs start operating, but not bad enough for a sleepless nite.

Room in 1 bedroom suite was tight, but you get worse internationally and at least there's the open plan lounge area to catch a breather.
