My husband, son and I just returned from a trip to South Africa--including 5 nights at the Queen Victoria. The hotel was truly wonderful. We had two rooms--both lovely. Beautiful furnishings, large and luxurious bathrooms, very comfortable beds.
The hotel is located on a small hill a few hundred yards away from the V and A Waterfront. It is part of a small complex that includes the hotel's small (but very functional) gym, a related hotel, the Dock House, and a lovely pool area. The whole area is very quiet and serene. The pool, located on a large grassy lawn, was a popular place to rest after a long day of touring.
The V and A Waterfront is fairly "insane". Over the holidays it was packed with tourists--and there is a lot of loud amplified music. We loved walking around the Waterfront, but were so happy we had chosen the Queen Victoria -- a few hundred feet from the action, yet quiet and peaceful.
Breakfast was included in the room rate. The breakfasts at the hotel were terrific--either the lovely buffet with cereals, yogurts, fruits and pastries, or a hot menu in the hotel's beautiful restaurant. We ate at the Queen Victoria a few days, and also walked down the the Victoria and Alfred (another related hotel) a few times for a larger spread--you can eat at either restaurant.
The staff was also exceptional. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The front desk staff was particularly outstanding. They greeted us after our days of touring , helped us with dinner reservations (always with perfect recommendations), and generally chatted with us about Cape Town. The manager even came to our room to help us with a tricky shower (well, we found it tricky…)
On our last evening we had an emergency --my son required medical attention. We went to the front desk, described the situation and before I could get the words out "can you find us a doctor", the staff was on the phone with the hotel physician. And the doctor was at our door within 30 minutes. The following morning the front desk followed up with us to make certain everything was okay. Truly exceptional service!
This hotel is THE PERFECT place to stay in Cape Town.
