Owner description: Uthando (Love) South Africa is an internationally award winning and unique Non Profit Organisation and Fair Trade certified company. Uthando raises funds and other forms of assistance for a broad range of inspiring and innovative community development projects in South Africa. Uthando runs tours as daily scheduled tours AND tailormade private tours (for groups of any size). We take visitors into the townships (impoverished areas created during Apartheid on the outskirts of Cape Town) to visit incredible community development projects. We shine a light on the remarkable people and projects that are helping to build the new South Africa at grass roots level. On our tours we tell the remarkable story and history of South Africa and its brutal past, we discuss pertinent issues confronting our people, and provide an inspiring sense of hope through the efforts of dedicated grass roots leaders. Our tours are authentic, meaningful, non-invasive, respectful and very importantly beneficial to the communities being visited. The cost of our tours incorporate contributions to the projects that we visit and can thus also be considered philanthropic in nature. UTHANDO IS FAR MORE THAN JUST A NON PROFIT COMPANY, IT IS A LABOUR OF LOVE DEDICATED TO HELPING CREATE A MORE JUST AND EQUITABLE BRAVE NEW WORLD !

“The Highlight of our Trip”
Reviewed 3 May 2014

Our Uthando 'tour' was the most moving half-day of our entire two week trip. We visited a day care/nursery school in Gugulethu, a cooperative called Ekhaya Ekasi and a senior center both in Kayelitsha. Seeing the organizations in action and meeting the people whose lives are touched by the work of these organizations was heart warming and incredibly meaningful for us. This experience should not be missed!!!
We especially enjoyed the visit to the Senior Center in Kayelitsha where we met and embraced over 50 seniors who had experienced the worst days of apartheid. We HIGHLY recommend this experience! Thank you to Xolani for a great day.

“Unique and authentic experience”
Reviewed 27 April 2014

I was dreading the thought of a 'township tour' as I thought it would be patronizing and voyeuristic. This tour was most definitely not like this at all. I would say it is the ONLY way to get a vaguely accurate sense of what life is like in a township. Our guide, James, was knowledgeable and passionate and provided a unique insight into the history of the area and current political situation. We visited a number of community projects and got to meet some amazing people who are working very hard under difficult conditions to make whatever difference they can. The opportunity to donate to the projects also meant that we could make our own small contribution.

“Comprehensive without being voyeuristic”
Reviewed 13 April 2014

If you want to do a tour that really helps you understand the challenges of a life in a township, go with Uthando. You will visit at least three social projects out of the forty supported by the NGO and if you feel compelled to you are invited to donate at the end of the tour. We went to a nursery, a gardening project and a centre for senior citizens, where we were asked a lot of questions and were invited to sing and dance. Uthando offers you a very personal and somewhat overwhelming insight we recommend to everybody who wants to visit a township without being voyeuristic.

“Inspirational and genuine - don't miss this opportunity.”
Reviewed 27 March 2014

My experience visiting four of the Uthando supported projects was the highlight of my Cape Town visit. Xolani took us to visit a community garden where the women grow vegetables that are sold to restaurants in the city. I was fascinated that they use the garden left overs (tops, vines etc) to produce the gas they use to fire the stove. Talk about recycling - this is an amazing project. The Kiddies Educare was an uplifting visit. The director is an amazing and compassionate lady who started the program which now educates pre-school, kindergarten and first graders. The rooms full of smiling, learning youngsters were wonderful to see. Uthando partners with Kiddies Educare and helped them build the school building they now occupy. We also visited a women's center where the ladies develop skills that further their livelihoods. Our last stop with a Sr. Center. The ladies and gentlemen welcomed us with smiles and warm hearts. They wanted to learn about our lives and shared theirs with us. We got to sing and dance together and it felt like we were, for a brief while, a part of their community. This was a heart warming experience.
Xolani, thank you sharing your knowledge and passion for the work Uthando is doing in the townships. Also, please thank the adults and children who shared their daily life experiences with us. These visits have made a lasting impression on me and reinforced my belief that when we come together to share about good, we make friends across miles and boundaries of time and nationality.
