Owner description: Uthando (Love) South Africa is an internationally award winning and unique Non Profit Organisation and Fair Trade certified company. Uthando raises funds and other forms of assistance for a broad range of inspiring and innovative community development projects in South Africa. Uthando runs tours as daily scheduled tours AND tailormade private tours (for groups of any size). We take visitors into the townships (impoverished areas created during Apartheid on the outskirts of Cape Town) to visit incredible community development projects. We shine a light on the remarkable people and projects that are helping to build the new South Africa at grass roots level. On our tours we tell the remarkable story and history of South Africa and its brutal past, we discuss pertinent issues confronting our people, and provide an inspiring sense of hope through the efforts of dedicated grass roots leaders. Our tours are authentic, meaningful, non-invasive, respectful and very importantly beneficial to the communities being visited. The cost of our tours incorporate contributions to the projects that we visit and can thus also be considered philanthropic in nature. UTHANDO IS FAR MORE THAN JUST A NON PROFIT COMPANY, IT IS A LABOUR OF LOVE DEDICATED TO HELPING CREATE A MORE JUST AND EQUITABLE BRAVE NEW WORLD !

We are a family of five. Our kids have the age of 19, 17 and 13. We all were very happy we did a private township tour with Uthando. We visited several projects: a gardening project, a dancing for kids project, a choir project, a an elderly home and afterwards we went for lunch (BBQ) at Mzoli's
Our guide Xholani was really very good. We learned a lot from him about South Africa, its history in an open interesting way, not the classical tour guide experience.
Our Children and we found this the top experience on our trip in South Africa

We were worried this would be voyerism. But thanks to the sensitive way it is organised and the chance to participate in the positive impact that Uthando has it was a very uplifting experience. Thanks to Xolani for a truly eye opening experience.

My partner and I last visited South Africa in 1995 and did a township tour which felt slightly invasive. This time we visited the country with our two teenage daughters and I felt that it was important for us to see what life is like in the townships and so I looked into different tours. Uthando stood out for me as I liked the fact that it is a NGO working with projects in the townships. We had a great guide- thank you Xolani, and learnt a lot about life in the townships. We visited a craft project for women (and bought some crafts there- we now wish we had bought more!), an amazing organic garden and a project for older people. We were greeted with warmth and were inspired by the work of all the projects. The tour had a lasting impression on us and I am now trying to think of ways in which I can continue to support the work which Uthando does. Please consider booking a tour with Uthando when you visit Cape Town.

The Uthando tour that we took with Xolani was an inspiring, authentic, uplifting experience for our family. The diversity of programs we saw was a testament to the breadth of Uthando's work. From organic gardening, to a craft cooperative, to a dizzying array of children's programs, Uthando's work is engaging and empowering people who live very differently from the way we do. Hopefully, witnessing the power of grass-roots programs will remind us be committed to such efforts at home, as well. My three teens were enthralled and I am grateful for the opportunity to have participated.

Our tour with Uthando was a deeply moving experience. Our guide was personable, enthusiastic and provided our family with an excellent overview of South African history and all its complexities. The programs we visited where we met leaders transforming their communities gave us an opportunity to listen to the needs of the people and their hope for the future. Highly recommended. It is a journey that will reach your heart.
