“Excellent stay + superb wine&dine evening”
Reviewed 1 April 2012

We hadn't stayed at the Mount Nelson for many years and were pleased to see that the high standards hadn't dropped. We stayed as a group of 6 under a package for the wine & dine evening (superb food and wine...recommended). Our room was in Green Park wing, dual aspect, overlooking the gardens and Table Mountain beyond...perfect! The lift wasn't working on arrival (one member of party was in a wheel chair) so this caused some fun, still the staff dealt with it and it wasn't a big problem...
We'll definitely be returning for another wine & dine evening + overnight stay...excellent value (compared to standard rates for b&b only)!

This is a charming if a little old fashioned hotel. Service is very good - if a little stuffy for my taste. I did not feel very relaxed here although I was on holiday.
The first room I checked into had a glorious view of Table Mountain but the room was just too "colonial" for my taste - but it was no problem and I was offered another room (suite) which although it had a view over the gardens was much more acceptable and had a small seperate lounge area which was nice. Both rooms had lovely, spacious bathrooms with lots of natural light.
The food was excellent and all the staff I encountered were polite and friendly.

One of the numerous positive experiences you will appreciate during your stay at the Mount Nelson Hotel is the very personal attention you will receive from the management and staff throughout the hotel. The perfect beginning to your day is enjoying breakfast overlooking the pool and gardens and ending your day with an epicurial delight at the Planet Resturant. You will especially enjoy the talents of the sommlier's ability to choose the perfect glass of wine to pair with your culinary selections. So with hearty best wishes - enjoy your stay.

Stayed in Mount Nelson in March 2012 and it was truly excellent. My room was overlooking the gardens and pool, not Table Mountain but this was not a problem. Only had breakfasts and lunch but the food was excellent. Staff were incredibly helpful and the reception staff even remembered my name. Would definitely stay again.

The hotel was excellent and the service was superb. The only thing I would suggest is that they have more choices of wines by the glass.
The other downside is children in the pool - as we all know children and pools = noise and there is no second pool.
However all in all I would certainly recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Look at the room first - we changed ours to a first floor room as we sleep with the windows open and...

This review is for High Tea at the Mount Nelson, not the accommodation itself.

You will find a bewildering array of teas on offer, enough savoury and sweet treats to assuage even the most persistent of hunger pangs, all served in the luxurious surroundings of one of the best hotels in South Africa. Live music, sparkling wine option. Much to enjoy.

Tip: Go on a weekday, and sit in the lounge rather than outdoors or the conservatory if you want an elegant experience. Weekends are busy, and larger groups tend not to be seated in the lounge.

While the golden years of the Nelson might be past, it is still a solid choice for a retreat in Cape Town. As compared to other hotels in the city, it is the one that can provide you with gorgeous grounds and the space to unwind by the pool surrounded by lush gardens. For the most part, the staff are excellent. Unfortunately some of the supervisors seem like relics from the Apartheid era, and there seems to be a glass ceiling for those who are not white. This remains a problem and I think does affect morale. Otherwise, the service staff are very attentive and some have been around for years doing excellent work (and should be promoted).

I had some nitpicky issues with my room. Gone are the slippers (which is an odd item to omit for budgetary reasons?). My shower had low water pressure and did not drain properly, so I wound up ankle deep in cold water. The flat screen tv's are a big improvement, although the channel selection (30 only) is subpar. Local satellite access allows for four times that many. The breakfasts have toned down since the days of steak tartar, but are still very good. Pastries and breads, now made in house, are improved. The spa has received a major upgrade, but so have the prices.

If you are a fan of old world character and plenty of outdoor space, the Mount Nelson is still worth a try.

Thank you for posting your comments. Your point about the attitude of a supervisor is well noted and I did see the guest comment that you addressed to us about this matter. I will monitor this closely as this is unacceptable.
Sorry for the few technical issues that you encountered in your room. Slippers are a standard amenity in all guestrooms and therefore do not understand why you did not have them. Finally, our current television system allows us to have 30 channels and not as many options as you may have in your home.
We hope to have the pleasure of seeing you again in the near future and appreciate your ongoing patronage.
