“Sydney a marvel in Cape Town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 May 2012

Had an excellent high tea experience here with family, made all the more special by the service we received from our waiter Sydney. A veteran of the Mount Nelson, Sydney had served there for over thirty years and is clearly a man passionate about tea!

He displayed great relish in encouraging us to try new teas and I enjoyed the art form that his approach to tea making entailed!

The buffet was also excellent and the hotel is certainly well worth a visit.

We thoroughly enjoyed this hotel, their staff, their amenities and everything in between! The day manager (tall, slim, black gentleman) made certain we had a Junior Suite prepared for us with only a few minute's notice of our stay. While we waited, we were served hot tea on the patio tables. He also arranged for MANNY, our chauffeur in his white Mercedes Benz E-class, to take us to Simons Town to see the penguins at Boulder Beach and all the way to Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point. The bell hop was always prepared to cater to our needs including calling taxis to pick us up at the hotel or anywhere within Cape Town, all we did was call the hotel to tell them where we were & they'd arange a cab to come get us. Our 4-night stay in our suite was superb with evening turn down service that included chilled water in a carafe on each nightstand, plus setting of linen cloth on the floor by our beds with our plush slippers on each side including a smaller pair for our daughter by her luxuriously made roll-in bed. The separate tub and shower was appointed with L'Occitane toiletries, my favorite! Of course, every afternoon, we helped oursleves to their grand VICTORIAN AFTERNOON TEA that came with our suite room rates. Every morning, breakfast was made to order or we would dig into the buffet and have them make fresh South African-style pancakes or an omelette or two -- also included in our rates. Wonderful grounds and a lavish spa treatment was enjoyed on our stay. The pool was a tad too cold in June for us. OVERALL, we were treated like royalty to the very end.

Lacks some of the charm that an out of location would have, however all well appointed and well furnished.
Combine stay with high tea.

I travelled in a party with an escort from Australia (Bill Peach). April is a perfect time for sightseeing. I was impressed firstly by the exterior beauty of the Mount Nelson: the warm colour of the building, the exquisitely manicured gardens - spacious and with many shady trees. The pool is a winner. My room was more than adequate: I do like to open windows, but this was not to be. The dining room was excellent: friendly service, ample menu choices and a lovely serene atmosphere. On departure we required snacks very early. A lovely table set beyond the foyer greeted us with all that could be desired..

Room Tip: This was done in advance for us

Stayed for 4 days at the MNH with my partner in April 2012, travelled for business. As with ‎everything, attention to detail should not be underestimated. Generally speaking, our stay would ‎have been OK, if not the credit theft and a sour e-mail from the hotel concierge upon our ‎departure. This is a rusty bureaucratic institution rather than a five-star hotel.

Some points:‎

‎-‎ Slow check-in without a smile
‎-‎ The newspapers requested never arrived ‎
‎-‎ High tea: the actual hot drink was properly prepared, but the finger food is poor
‎-‎ Breakfast and lunch at the Oasis restaurant resemble school canteen, both in service and ‎food quality (tea-coloured “coffee” for breakfast, etc.)‎
‎-‎ Nice bathroom, spacious room. However our window leaked rain water and the faulty ‎shower door flooded the bathroom floor ‎
‎-‎ Too many people coming in and out of the room: somebody comes to ask whether the ‎service is ok, then the maid comes in with a “don’t disturb” sign on the door, then the fire ‎alarm needs replacing without prior notice...‎
‎-‎ Upon check-out, my partner forgot his phone charger in the room, which he asked to get ‎delivered to a nearby restaurant. The hotel agreed to deliver for a round sum of ZAR590, ‎which is more than a return taxi fare and more than the cost of the charger. Normally, one ‎expects some “after-care”‎
‎-‎ Last, but not least, my credit cards that have not left the room, have all been cloned. ‎‎(Somebody in Lesotho spent £500 from my account)‎

Considering the size of the hotel the little shabbiness and dry sandwiches could be excused and ‎the poor service could be forgiven – if only this was a vibrant place with character and charm. It is ‎not. ‎

In February I organised a conference at the Mount Nelson Hotel. I can highly recommend this venue. The venue provides the tranquillity for a highly success meeting. The staff are extremely professional and attentive to your requirements and needs. We have had two conferences at the Mount Nelson and would also recommend the venue. The bedrooms are extremely comfortable and clean. The choice of breakfast and lunch was just incredible and afternoon tea an absolute MUST. I would love to go back tomorrow.
