We had booked two rooms on a family special, with requests for interconnected and main building. We did not only receive this but also an upgrade to fabulous and huge deluxe rooms on the top floor, overlooking Table Mountain. The rooms were renovated, well equipped and in top condition. It was very quiet despite being just above the main entrance. And very clean except for the balconies which were not cleaned during our 5-night stay – the birds really made a mess there.
Breakfast on the Oasis terrace was great as always, still among my personal top three together with the Halekulani and the Raffles Angkor. Make sure to take full advantage of what’s on offer: In addition to the buffet, breakfast includes an item from the à la carte menu – the respective menu cards were never handed out. And the bubbly is sometimes hidden in the fridge. You don’t really eat those great oysters with coffee or hot chocolate, do you?
Service was always friendly although a bit patchy: Our room keys stopped working at noon on our second day. So down to reception to get them reprogrammed. Just to make sure I asked if they were now ok for the rest of the stay. You are checking out tomorrow, right? Ehm, no.
We wanted to go to Waterfront. The bell captain said that we could go there by courtesy car. Great. So we waited and waited. After 15 minutes I asked again and a bellman said that they now had a car but no driver – and that it would take another 5-10 minutes. Shortly thereafter, another bellman said it would be another 25 minutes or so.
The kids have loved the pool as well as feeding the squirrels in Company’s Garden nearby. Of course with nuts bought at the supermarket, no one has ever noted the hazelnuts on the breakfast buffet. Also close to the hotel on Kloof Street one finds several restaurants (Arnold’s is directly opposite the hotel’s back entrance) and a community shopping mall with a small upmarket Woolworth groceries and a wine store.
So what has changed since my last stay in 1992? The renovated rooms were much nicer than the somewhat worn and dusty suite back then. A few minor things were missing, like the guard in the white tropical uniform saluting arrivals on Orange Street. Or the beef tartar on the breakfast buffet. Also, they have added new wings to the hotel which we have successfully avoided – why book the famous Pink Palace and then stay nearby? I had the impression that the hotel is moving away from a colonial “Out of Africa” focus towards yet another contemporary yuppie wellness temple. Also, it was sad to see a huge tour group staying here, the whole herd wearing group badges around the neck at breakfast – oh no.
I still think that the Nellie is the best place to stay in Cape Town – as long as the rates remain halfway reasonable. So please bring back the Family Time rate instead of filling the rooms with tour groups. And take good care of the African heritage – this is the venerable Mount Nelson and not a Belmond anywhere hotel & spa.
