Spent four nights here and enjoyed every moment of our stay. We arrived in the early morning but were treated to tea on the terrace while we waited for our room to be ready. Lovely room, huge, with nice bathroom and large bath. Breakfast every morning on terrace overlooking the pool, such a treat with extensive selection of foods. Had afternoon tea twice which meant we did not need dinner - it's huge, the only criticism was that on one occasion there was a large party of screaming women inside, and that the staff do not wipe the tables clean between service. Lovely food. Ate dinner in restaurant one night - very good indeed. Beds comfortable, room clean and very quiet. Every member of the staff appears to be proud to work there, which makes it special. Nicest thing - it's a luxury hotel with lovely garden in the downtown area, and is not a cookie cutter place - there is nothing else like it. Bonus is that it's no-smoking.

We got married and stayed at the "Nellie" for 4 Nights in January this year. We had an absolutely amazing time, it was everything we dreamed of and more. I have to say that I was a little apprehensive getting married abroad, as you can end up being a little out of control, however with the staff, especially Genevieve all of our fears were diminished.
The service was in a private garden in the grounds, the minister Andred Hayward was amazing, and everyone who has seen the video says that it is the best service they had ever seen....... The Cake (Wades Cakes), Photographers (Clifford and Shelley Alexander), The Hair (Steven) and Makeup (Lyndal) Flowers and Harpist were all amazing........and the meal in the Restaurant. We had the Perfect Day...........and I would recommend it to anyone thinking about getting married abroad.

In terms of the Hotel, we had a fantastic room in the older part of the hotel, with a lounge and a bathroom to die for......breakfast was great, the Planet Bar was cool and so were the Club sandwiches.....and Afternoon Tea........was incredible.

The Gardens were so pretty, the pools fantastic, the little one by Sydenham Terrace was blissful, and again pool service was great. I did not have a spa treatment but are sure it would have been fab!

Nothing was too much trouble for anyone, while we were there we hired an AC Cobra, and drove down to Cape Point, which was amazing, and we went to the Summer evening concert in Kirstenbosch Gardens which was so cool.

What more can I say...........we are in the process of booking to go back and stay at the "Nellie" it's a piece of history, elegant and with a superb service, can't wait to be back there!!

What can I say.... The Nelson is our favourite hotel in the world.
The timing of our flight meant we arrived early for check in but this was not a problem and we were treated like VIP’s from the moment we walked in. We were given a tour of the hotel so we got our bearings quickly and knew how to access all the facilities. As we were in South Africa to get married we were upgraded from a standard room to a junior suite which was beautiful (we also received complimentary champagne). All this and we weren't even getting married in their hotel!
Staff were always polite and courteous and couldn’t do enough to ensure our stay was special. The concierge greeted us by name every day (which was a nice touch as he had a lot to remember)
In the evening staff turned down our bed, put out robes and slippers ready for us to slip into on our return and placed bottled water on the nightstand which all took some getting used to at first (but we did and very quickly)
Breakfast at the Nelson was something we looked forward to every morning. There was an amazing choice and everything looked and tasted wonderful, you could have just about anything you wanted, including champagne! The service was excellent, we have had lunch in the Oasis restaurant on a previous visit and can highly recommend that too.
We indulged in High Tea which was an event in itself and a ‘must do’ just make sure you book places asap as they get busy especially on a Sunday. Make sure you check out the Planet Bar, the decor is stunning.
The Nelson is an amazing place, a beautiful hotel full of old fashioned charm that knows how to make all of its’ guests feel very special and we didnt want to leave. We cant recommend this hotel highly enough and we cant wait until we can return.

Booked into the Mount Nelson on a two night special they were running in order to take my girlfriend there and pop the question. The staff, the room (they upgraded us for this special occassion), the setting, the food, the whole experience (because it isint a stay at a hotel - it is an experience), was really really excellent and memorable.

Went to the new One and Only for dinner and drinks, and yes its new and slick and sophisticated, but it reminds me of a middle eastern conference centre, and lacks the character and charm of the Nellie.

Highly highly recommended!

A great classic hotel, but very expensive for South Africa. We stayed ona corporate rate, which made it worthwhile. They have a beautiful garden, but you can't see the sea from the hotel.

The high tea is worth experiencing, even if you don't stay here. It costs 150ZAR per person and you can go back for as many scones, cucmber sandwiches, etc as you want.

They also have a corporate car to take you within a 10 mile radius of the hotel. Very useful in the evening if you want to go out for dinner and don't want to drive.

The Mount Nelson is a wonderful place to relax and its setting is very attractive. The rooms are large and tastefully decorated and the pool area is a great place to get some sun and unwind or have a cool dip. Service is generally excellent. Dining is very good though I thought the scones at the fabled afternoon tea were a bit indifferent. Our visit which was going wonderfully was mostly ruined by the theft of cash from our room safe. Hotel security apparently investigated it but in the end resolved nothing and hotel management never contacted us. It is quite disappointing that after ten years of international travel and having stayed in some pretty marginal places, my one and only robbery occurred in this five star hotel.

After much research on hotels and b&bs in Cape Town we decided upon the Mount Nelson. We had a standard room in the main building. The room was reasonably spacious, original fire place etc but with a very small bathroom. Also only one large arm chair, where two smaller ones would have been more friendly, as it was a double room! As some people have said, the TV was ancient, but we never turned it on.
Generallly the food and service was good, but my 1,800 rand credit card imprint for extras was actually charged, and I had to contact the hotel for a refund, as my expenditure at the hotel was also charged. At breakfast one morning whilst plent of staff were on duty they were disorganised. A cup and napkin were missing from the table we were shown to, and no tea spoons. We had to ask for them, rather then someone noticing they were missing. Also, one evening we had no evening service in the bedroom, again plenty of staff about. These are minor points, but the reason why I have scored the hotel as 4 rather than 5.
One thing that is not mentioned much is the great location of the hotel. The secondary entrance/exit onto Kloof Street with all its restaurants, bars and shops is great. The hotel is in the thick of thing, but due to the size of the grounds remains peaceful and relaxed. Also, the many functions that took place during our stay did not create disturbance, including a large wedding.
Overall, if you want to splash a bit of cash, this is the place, rather than the much busier V&A waterfront in this great city. Also we will have no hesitation in returning.
