“Comfort & location !”
Reviewed 22 January 2014

First time in cape town made memorable by the Breakwater lodge. Located in the V& A, the location is outstanding. we could walk across where all the action was happening any time of the the day or night and walk back late at night without having to worry !

Buffet breakfast was extensive, hotel grounds spotless. Wi-fi quality great.

We had dinner twice at their restaurant and both times the food was amazing !

hotel staff are always cheerful and eager to help,

hotel has half & full day tour options that are reasonably priced. the hotel is also located just opposite the hop in-hop off tour bus head office where all their tours start and end

highly recommend it and we will definitely be back.

It may be expensive for a small room, but the hotel was prison in the past. It gives some experience to feel staying a prison. So I was enjoyed for that reason. The hotel is close to waterfront and convenient for dining and shopping.

I moved here to save some money over the weekend at the end of a business trip. What a great move! Half the price of the waterfront hotel I had stayed in for my business meetings etc. and so full of character.

The hotel is in the old prison, that I knew in advance, so was expecting it to be a little quirky. What I had not realised was it was also a university campus, and felt very much like going back to college.

The rooms are simple but clean, well designed and comfortable. The staff were generally helpful - but don't rely on them to get you a taxi in a hurry, better to walk to the taxi rank down at the waterfront. The highlight was when I left my phone in a cab and the staff managed to track the driver down from my receipt and persuade him to come and give it back (for a small reward of course!) - excellent service.

The cafe/restaurant was basic but more than ok for breakfast - just what you would expect in a university canteen. And given the number of top quality alternatives a stone's throw away you don't need anything more.

I never got around to using the spa, too busy (lazy?) but was told it was a reasonable facility by others who stayed there.

We stayed over New Years, and while you expect the price to be a bit higher over the high season, it was a bit much for what you get. Good spot, close to the V & A if you are willing to pay for it.the service was good, however breakfast was average.

We stayed at this hotel for one night. The location is great! However we found the rooms to be quite small and basic for the amount we paid! the bathroom did not smell clean and the shower drain was blocked. After having complained about that, they did not even bother to offer us a different room. They also charged us for parking in the hotel premises. Too basic and too overpriced.

Not just only a hotel, it was once a prison, now a place to sleep, eat, study and meet.
A lot of history, great setting, beautiful Table Mountain views, and the Business suites are great, roomy and peaceful!

Thank goodness we only stayed in this hotel for our last night. This hotel is really terrible. The lobby is too small and very crowded and the staff are surly. Although not too much of a problem, it is broken up into three separate blocks which can be confusing. When we arrived into S.A. 11 days earlier, the welcome at our hotel in Cape Town (see my Southern Sun Cullinan review) was so welcoming that it set a positive tone for the rest of our trip. If the Breakwater lodge had been our first hotel in S.A., I am sure the tone would have been very different.

The location is good because of its proximity to the waterfront but; that is really the only upside. As a stopover hotel for one night, it is ok however; if you plan to use it for your base in Cape Town, I suggest you look elsewhere.

With two young boys and no pool it made our one night in this poor hotel even more difficult.
