Rooms are 3 star quality, in general needs a make-over, and staff too lackadaisical.

Breakfast was average. Some friendly breakfast waiting staff.

Front desk painfully slow. Asked for someone to collect bags, 20 minutes no one came, had to go down and ask again.

Far far to expensive for real 3 star everything. Apartments in Central Cape Town are sophisticated, modern and half the price with usually amazing views compared to the Portswood. Shame.

Good location, very average hotel for the price. But above all do NOT take a room near the lift. I was in 402, and the noise of the antiquated lift moving up and down and opening next to my room was intolerable. And judging by the staff response, not the first time they've had that complaint! In fairness they moved me the following day, but only after one ruined night/morning.

The Portswood is in a great location - quiet but safely walkable to the V&A Waterfront.
There is a small pool and sun lounge area but you can also use the larger facilities (including gym) at the Commodore next door. There is parking right under the hotel (75 R a day). We did have problems getting out of the car park - the person when we checked in forgot to tell us you had to get your ticket validated, and then when someone did it still didn't work so we had to pop back in!
Other than that we had no problems. There is free Wi-Fi (up to 300Mb) but it can be slow. There is a "business centre" with two computers, scanner and printer though and this worked well. The staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was excellent if you arrived early - later on stocks on some buffet items ran low. It was best when they cooked hot food to order - at peak times this was just out in the buffet.
Water in the shower was never truely hot but warm...but then we went in summer so this didn't matter. There was air-con in the rooms, which is necessary in the heat. Some of the standard rooms may feel a little small - we upgraded so had plenty of space. All rooms have TV, hair dryer, tea/coffee/biscuits.
It's worth eating in the restaurant for lunch or dinner - fab food and value.

Situated close to the V&A waterfront this was just a place to sleep. Rooms are pretty neat but old and had no hot water. For the price we paid, and may I say it was expensive, we expected lots more. Not worth it unless yoi want a place to sleep within walking distance to the waterfront.

We had 4 nights at this hotel, booked by our travel agent as part of a package. I've stayed at other accommodation in Cape Town previously (and reviewed it on TripAdvisor), but this was a superior location, right across the road from the tourist Mecca that is the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, brimming with shops, restaurants and drinking establishments, plus the ferry to Robben Island.
The hotel itself was fine, with fairly standard rooms, appropriately furnished for it's standard, with an adequate bathroom. We slept well, enjoyed the complimentary sparkling and still water kept cool in the bar fridge, the free wifi, the air-conditioning (which was quite noisy at lower temperatures), the tea/coffee in the room and the turn-down service complete with chocolate. No problems here.
Breakfast was fine, too, with hot and cold choices. The staff at reception were helpful with directions, providing a map, telephoning out tour guide who was running a bit late, and rebooting the wifi on my iPad. The staff in the restaurant were pleasant at breakfast time, as were the doormen and bellboys.
It has a pool and a business centre with free internet.
We didn't have dinner here, as we were always interested in trying one of the myriad of restaurants at the V&A.
I'd stay here again without hesitation, and recommend it to anyone. it's a good hotel that benefits from a great location.

I visited Portswood last month. Overall my experience was really good. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Small glitches like wifi sometimes was not working, Door Card lock system was not good, I have to get my room card changed 3 times. But everytime when there was a problem someone was there to help you out. Room was very clean and properly managed. I dont like the food options there, menu was very limited, but I like the breakfast there.
Hotel location is very ideal, very close to waterfront and other major hotels.
Overall my stay was good and would like to visit there again.

Clean and comfortable room and across the street from the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. Close but not near the noise and business of the area. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was delicious! We sat by the pool and had our beers and peanuts at night and it felt heavenly! Would highly recommend staying there.
