After much research into hotels in the V & A Waterfront area we decided the Portswood was the best balance between location and price. Because there are several more expensive hotels in the area we didn't expect much from this hotel, however we were pleasantly suprised. The staff was excellent, very welcoming and always willing to help with whatever we needed. The rooms were nothing too special, but very clean and comfortable. The hotel itself was very classy. The breakfasts also surpassed our expectations with a nice buffet spread and hot breakfast to order, also with wonderful wait staff. We loved the loation also. It was within easy walking distance to all the shops and restaurants on the waterfront. We felt safe and thuroughly enjoyed our stay.

We stayed at the Portswood for 6 nights in December 2008 and found the hotel to meet all our expectations. Due to our requirements, the hotel room was not top notch, but it was what we wanted. The service was great and the breakfast was something we looked forward to every morning. The location is perfect for Cape Town, close to the Waterfront and at the same time in a quiet area. We would love to come back.

This was my first stay at the Portswood, although not my first time in Cape Town. The hotel is clean, comfortable, and located at the V&A Waterfront with all of its dining and shopping option. The staff was very friendly and the level of service was acceptable. The rooms are in need of some refurbishing, however, they were clean and comfortable. The hotel was very busy, and several families were staying here, and i would not hesitate to recommend it to a leisure traveler and indeed might stay here again myself if just on holiday.

However, I was in Cape Town on business and i am a very internet dependent business traveler. I communicate with home base and sites around the world and need reliable and adequate internet service when traveling. This hotel is not friendly to the internet dependent. The system seems archaic and was extremely slow. Several times it would time out while loading web pages (especially the night before my departure flight when I was trying to check in on line - i'll write about the complications this caused at the airport later -- downloading (complicated) files emailed to me was a trial, and on a couple of occasions I was not able to access at all. The "business center," 3 computers connected to a printer was even worse. There is wireless in the lobby and that appeared to be the only think near adequate for my needs. My productivity in the hotel was next to nil, which is unacceptable to me.

In short, great hotel for the leisure traveler, but there are better options for the internet dependent business traveler who wants to be productive.

We stayed here between 15 - 23 May 09, our second stay at The Portswood. The reason for returning was that it was superb last time (May 2008) and it's great to say that it was just as good (maybe even better!!) this time.
The Portswood is a perfect sized, well located, spotlessly clean, well managed and quality hotel.
To elaborate a little, the size is great, not too big so that it lacks a personal touch but not so small that it can't cope or lacks facilities. Location wise it's ideal...a five minute stroll puts you right into the heart of the Waterfront or a fifteen minute stroll takes you into the heart of Cape Town city centre (not recomended at night though). The rooms are just right...good sized, well maintained with the expected facilities such as mini bar, safe, air con and spotlessly clean. What really seals it for us with this hotel is the staff. Whether it is the porters and doormen or the manager, they are all sincerely warm, friendly, knowlegable and so keen to help (not just for tips which is a welcome relief in hotels these days). We arrived early morning but were offered a room virtually immediately and then offered a free up-grade as the room wasn't actually quite ready. We were allowed to keep our room on the day of departure until 17.30 (checkout is at 10.00am) for no extra charge. Breakfast is served in a pleasant, clean and well staffed restaurant and is a choice of either continental or full hot options. Again the quality and service was perfect.
Our second stay was absolutely perfect, we couldn't have asked for anything better than we received at The Portswood.
Our advice is simple....staying in Cape Town? Stay at The Portswood!!!!

The PortsWood was perfect. We had a large group (77) and the bottom line is they did everything right. Our rooms were ready when we arrived, we had a welcome reception with champagne, and the staff was sooooooooooooo friendly. The hotel is within 100 yards of the V&A Waterfront, where you can shop until you drop and you have an excellent choice of restaurants. If I every get back to the "Motherland" this is the place I will stay.

Very reasonably priced, within secure area of the waterfront, which is important. Great staff, good day trips easily arranged to Cape of Good Hope, penguins, baboon walk, others.

This is a great hotel to make the most of your stay in Cape Town.

It has a great location literally 5 mins walk max from the best part of the famous V&A waterfront so you can head there for a cooffee or drink any time you like.

The staff were excellent and very helpful, the room was really comfortable and clean with all you'd expect of a quality hotel, excellent breakfasts (by the pool if you want).

It was terrific value in my view as rates are way less than the top hotels right inside the V&A yet it's high quality and 5 mins away.

There's safe carparking underground (though note you pay 75 rand for this).

Pool is quite small but nice but there's a bigger pool and gym at the sister hotel right next door (Commodore).

Cape Town is a wonderful city, so easy to get round and so many stunning sights nearby (don't miss Cape Point, wine country and the drive to the Hottentots, Stellenbosch/Connstantia and dinig by the sea at Camps Bay and the V&A waterfront. CT city is nice especiallya round Company Gardens and the cathedral but the V&A especially at night is the star attraction.
