We have just returned from our very first trip to South Africa. The backpack staff were wonderful, friendly and helpful nothing being too much trouble. The rooms were excellent, with the most comfortable beds!! The location is great, so close to everything. We took the advice of the staff to book excellent trips that made everything just more special. If you are thinking about a trip to Cape Town go.....its just wonderful!

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 2 nights, it was a great base to have in Cape Town. The parking was convenient and you could walk to all the main attractions.

The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly.

The room was very clean and comfortable - we had a private double and the facilities were clean and very close by. It felt secure and safe.

It was nice to have the option to sit outside and enjoy a drink - it felt more like a retreat from the hectic city. Plus, having a view of table mountain made it even better - when we couldn't go up by cable car because of the wind, at least we could have a cup of tea and watch the 'table cloth' go over the edge.

As some have said there was noise at night I think because of the flooring and thin walls - it sounded like people were stomping through, even though they weren't. However it was only 'normal' noise like that instead of rowdiness or more stressful noises, so it didn't keep us awake.

Thank you for taking the time to review our hostel on Tripadvisor.

We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us, and was able to admire that stunning views that we are fortunate to have around our hostel.

It is unfortunate that there was some noise during the evenings that may have caused disturbance for you.

We hope to be able to welcome you back again to our hostel soon.

I did my research before booking and read through a ton of reviews before booking. The backpack really did turn out to be a little slice of heaven. I stayed here after a 55 day overland trip beginning in Uganda and it was absolutely perfect.

The staff were incredible and so helpful when recommending activities and answering any questions I had, being a single female I was a little leary but they were very reassuring.

The food was great, booze ver reasonably priced and the internet fast.

I stayed in the Womans 4 bed and it felt like a hotel, there were plenty of washrooms and all very clean (didnt have to wear my flip flops) the kitchen was always clean and they had everything you needed to prepare a meal.

The location was awesome, you have the most amazing view of the mountain and you're a 5 min walk to Long st. I walked down to the V&A and it took about 45min.

I would definitely recommend this hostel and would go back again in a heartbeat.

Close to most of Cape Town's offerings. Very helpful staff. A wonderfully chill and inviting atmosphere.
A few drawbacks: the dorms were unbearably noise due to outside noise (not fellow travelers), the bathrooms need more frequent servicing and it is a bit expensive.
I ended up staying next door, at another hostel, due to the noise issue alone. However I enjoyed The Backpack so much that I visited everyday for a week, and frequently ate at the cafe.

Overall, a pretty good hostel with a nice vibe. It has a wonderful location (we walked to and from restaurants at night with no problem), a relaxed atmosphere, helpful staff, and a mix of people from all walks of life. We stayed a few nights in the double ensuite and it is important to note that the walls are paper thin! We could hear everything outside our door (the communal kitchen and showers are located nearby), so not ideal if you want some privacy or quiet time. The internet connection is super slow and breakfast is not included in the price, even though the cost of the double ensuite rivals some well known B&Bs nearby. Would recommend staying here, but would advise those looking for something budget and tranquil to look at other places in the same area.

Thank you for your review, we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us.

By the nature of our establishment some rooms are closer to communal facilities than others and that is why those rooms are our budget options.

The internet is in South Africa very slow compared to the fast speeds of America, Europe and Asia. We are upgrading out system all the time and it is getting better – the speed is not due to us but rather by our service provider Telkom.

Kind regards

This is a great place to stay. Staff are friendly. The help you book the best trips in Cape Town, even at super short notice....and they know what they are talking about! The rooms are clean and very well equipped. Safe and a good location. Food is good and I met some great people here as well. Nothing to complain about really.
