“Budget appartment hotel near the waterfront area”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2012

I was in Capetown in Jan-Feb 2012 and stayed in Cape Castle for around 2 weeks. I took the 1BHK apartment room. I must say the room tidyness and facilities were quite nice. You can cook also since there were ample of utensils for use. My room was facing the waterfront and hence had some nice scenic view from the balcony of my room. There is a swimming pool also where you can spend some time and sip some beers in the adjacent cafe.

Overall, i would recommend it to business as well as leisure travelers.

Room Tip: Choose the one facing the waterfront.

I have recently stayed at PH Cape Castle and was pleasantly surprised with this three star fully serviced apartment suite hotel. The apartments are spacious, well equipped. The hotel also undergone a major makeover not so long ago and it has a more modern look now.

It is located centrally, a easy strolling distance of the Waterfront, the CBD and an array of convenience stores, offers undercover parking, a rim-flow pool, wireless internet, in-house restaurant with a great breakfast including room service. The internet coverage in my room was not great via wi-fi, even 3G constantly changed to Edge.

Price wise I think this hotel offers great deals and you can expect above 3 star service from the management and staff.

Room Tip: If you want a room with a stunning view of the Waterfront, opt for the more expensive and bigger Sup...

I stayed at the Protea Cape Castle in March 2012 for a business trip. The hotel is well located, next to nice restaurants, close to supermarkets and within walking distance of the Waterfront and Greenpoint Park. It is almost a 30 minute walk though. There are no beaches within walking distance, but the pool will do. Staff is friendly and helpful. The only thing was that during my stay I ordered dinner for two times, but both times my first choice was not available.

Dear GUEST

Thank you for posting a review on Tripadvisor.

I am pleased you were generally happy with the hotel but dissappointed to learn that we did not have your first choice of dish available from our menu on two occasions.

The menu was at the end of the cycle and a number of items were unavailable. I am however pleased to point out that the menu is being revised as we speak and this should not therefore happen again in the foreseeable future.

Kind Regards

We stayed here on the 21st April for 4 nights and everything was great, can't complain about anything. We arrived at 9.30am and check in wasn't til 3 but they let us check in early which was great after such a long flight. Staff are very nice and are happy to tell you how to get to places and what to do and see. Room was great, we were on the 9th floor and had a great view of table mountain. Room was spacious, fine big living room with kitchen and bedroom and bathroom were nice size, cleaned daily. Didn't have any food there so can't comment on that. It's an easy 10 walk to V&A waterfront and about 15/20 mins to long street. Great great location. Don't hesitate to book.

Booked into this hotel as part of a package from London staying first in Cape Town and 2nd in a Game Lodge near Kruger National Park.

Initial impressions were good. Clean reception area, modern appearance, smart and polite staff. Room was almost ready even though we arrived fairly early in the day (about 1030). The hotel is situated about a 15 minute walk from the Waterfront and the area appeared quite safe during the day.

The room itself was good. Clean and spacious, well decorated with everything you would need including a small kitchenette that had cutlery and cooking utensils for two with an electric hob should you choose the self catering option. It also had a great view of Table Mountain and an overlooking view of part of the harbour area although mainly the industrial part of it. Not a big problem at all though.

Breakfast was a little disappointing though. There was a selection of cheeses and cereals with fruit and also a 'hot' buffet. The buffet was however lukewarm at best. It consisted of, pork sausages, bacon, beef sausages, chicken livers, potato croquettes and baked beans. Most were not that great in terms of taste but sufficed to give you a bit of energy for the morning. This certainly could be improved on, even if they offered a locally inspired breakfast but was cooked well and hot!

Before I detail a couple of issues that we had, I would like to point out that 99% of the staff were great. Very polite and helpful and we were made to feel at home.

However, we did have issue with one in particular.
We had no idea what was the best way to get to the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway so thought the best thing to do would be to speak to reception to ask them to call for a taxi.
Thinking the safest option was to speak to reception as they would surely call a reputable company/person. Reception staff quoted a price of around 130 Rand for the one way journey.
The driver arrived about 10 minutes later and was fine at first.
On getting into the cab/jeep I noticed the meter was unplugged. Ok I should have stopped then but we carried on.
At the end of the journey I asked the driver how much and he asked me how much the hotel had quoted? I offered a price of 120 Rand which he begrudgingly accepted.

On the way back, we took a metered taxi who was great. He explained issues about people getting ripped off and pointed out features to look for on the meter (making sure it starts off on rate 1, not rate 2). The total price for the journey back to the hotel was 65 Rand!

The reception staff and driver had clearly ripped us off. Not a huge amount at all by taxi standards and still cheap but none the less annoying, especially thinking that the hotel would be the best port of call for a reputable taxi. I cant even be sure if he was an official taxi driver judging by the car.

Other issues with the same member of staff surrounded him asking if we wanted to book into a township tour and a wine land tour. We declined saying that we had things planned but were not sure exactly what days we were doing things on. He said he would book us in anyway and we could cancel if we wanted. We declined this and told him we were not interested.
On returning in the evening the same member of staff told us that our planned activities that we had arranged ourselves for the next day had been cancelled and he had booked us in for the tours he mentioned. (We called the tour operator when we got to the room who confirmed that the tour was going ahead as planned and had not been cancelled). We again told him we did not want this. We got to our room and found a letter slipped under the door confirming that he had booked us in for the two tours!
We immidiately called reception and firmly told him that we did not want to go on any of his arranged tours and wanted to cancel. He told us this was done.

On returning the next day, a different member of staff asked us where we had been as the tour operator that had been arranged had turned up looking for us and they could not get hold of us! We had a number of voicemails from the hotel/tour operator which I had to pay for to retrieve.

It was all explained and we were not charged but we were still annoyed that despite telling him otherwise, he still booked the tours.

While other staff were fine, it appeared that this one member of staff was intent on ripping us off (taxi) and arranging tours despite us completely declining so.

So, overall, not a bad hotel but make sure you dont get ripped off by staff who appeared to be trying to make some commission on tours and taxis!

Dear Gizmo143

Thank you for your feedback following your recent stay. I am pleased you were generally happy with the accommodation and services but disappointed to learn that you felt one of our STAFF members was attempting to "rip you off" in respect of taxis and tours.

I've had an opportunity to investigate and have had discussions with our STAFF, our preferred taxi operator and two tour operators who we use.

I have tried to piece together exactly what has transpired and have sent you a personal email to try and ascertain precisely the sequence of events so that I may make an informed determination. Clearly I would like our Front Office Personnel to assist all our visitors but do not want them to "bully" GUESTS in any way for financial gain.

I hope I will learn further from you so that I may take the appropriate steps.

Sincerely,
David Wilson Poe

Booke dinto this hotel by mistake, thinking it was somewhere else in CT ! Stupid me.

What a pleasant surprise as it is easy to get to . Stunning room, with small kitchenette. Very clean and modern furnishings. All in all a very acceptable base for work or play in CT
