We had recently read that the Protea group of hotels had been taken over by the Marriott group, so we decided to give this a try as we were visiting Cape Town. Cape Town & its surrounding areas lives up to its reputation of being one of the most beautiful cities in the world!
However, the hotel has some way to go before it reaches the standards of a world class property. Though we found the property quite easily, finding the entrance was a challenge. You have to enter through the car park & then take a tiny lift to reception. I had booked on the Marriott website so check-in was quite effortless. The rooms were a bit strange - the largest room was the living room, which was quite comfortable. It also has a tiny kitchenette which is quite well stocked if you want to cook. The bedroom is quite tiny & is totally consumed by a fairly large & comfortable bed (the pillows need some looking into, though!). The bathroom is also tiny, but clean & functional!
We didnt get the wharf facing rooms, however if you craned your neck enough you could get a nice view of the Table Top mountain as well as the V& A waterfront ;)
the V&A aterfront is quite close by - a 5 minute taxi ride that costs R 40 one way. Loads of eating options there! So we didnt get to eat in the hotel restaurant, so cant comment on the food there!
The concierge was kind enough to find us a reasonable priced (hopefully, as we have no comparison!) car with driver and we were able to visit the local attractions like Stellenbosch wine country, Chapmans Peak drive, Cape Point & Boulder's Rock! Its a stunning drive, indeed!
I think the hotel is comfortable & livable if you are staying for a short time & are using it for staying at night. It certainly is good on the wallet.
