“An average well-priced hotel”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

We had recently read that the Protea group of hotels had been taken over by the Marriott group, so we decided to give this a try as we were visiting Cape Town. Cape Town & its surrounding areas lives up to its reputation of being one of the most beautiful cities in the world!

However, the hotel has some way to go before it reaches the standards of a world class property. Though we found the property quite easily, finding the entrance was a challenge. You have to enter through the car park & then take a tiny lift to reception. I had booked on the Marriott website so check-in was quite effortless. The rooms were a bit strange - the largest room was the living room, which was quite comfortable. It also has a tiny kitchenette which is quite well stocked if you want to cook. The bedroom is quite tiny & is totally consumed by a fairly large & comfortable bed (the pillows need some looking into, though!). The bathroom is also tiny, but clean & functional!
We didnt get the wharf facing rooms, however if you craned your neck enough you could get a nice view of the Table Top mountain as well as the V& A waterfront ;)

the V&A aterfront is quite close by - a 5 minute taxi ride that costs R 40 one way. Loads of eating options there! So we didnt get to eat in the hotel restaurant, so cant comment on the food there!

The concierge was kind enough to find us a reasonable priced (hopefully, as we have no comparison!) car with driver and we were able to visit the local attractions like Stellenbosch wine country, Chapmans Peak drive, Cape Point & Boulder's Rock! Its a stunning drive, indeed!

I think the hotel is comfortable & livable if you are staying for a short time & are using it for staying at night. It certainly is good on the wallet.

Room Tip: Ask for a waterfront room

An average hotel in the old part of Cape Town. The Building is an old-style one. Parking in the building is difficult to navigate. The hotel interior is old. The rooms are okay but worn.

The staff were friendly. Breakfast was great and had variety. I had a room with a lovely view of the harbour. The vicinity in which the hotel is located is peaceful.

All in all the hotel offers fair value. I would give it a 3 out of 5.

I would consider staying again, if I have to.

Room Tip: Choose a Room with Harbour View

Dear Dezign99

Thank you for taking the time to post a review.

We're glad you were comfortable and would stay again.

We accept the parking is narrow and one has to take care - the restrictions of a high rise building in the City.

I have been visiting this hotell many times, for both business and family vacation. The hotel management and staff welcome you back as a dear friend. I have never met a level of service and friendliness like here in any other hotel. The staff really makes you feel welcome and feel like home.
In addition the rooms are big, nice and clean. Protea Cape Castle is situated in the Green Point area, which is a very nice and quiet part of the city. From the top front rooms which are my favorites, you have a wonderful view over this beautiful city.
Last, but not least Cape Town is probably the most beautiful city in the world. In total this probably makes it my favorite hotel in the world.

Room Tip: Go for the front rooms on the 5, 6, 7 or 8 th floor. The have a lot of space and a beautiful view ov...

Well priced, good location, well serviced, under cover parking and good service from staff. Really enjoyed our stay, well worth it. Great view of V & A, also has a kitchen for self catering and good pool for summer months.

Room Tip: Choose rooms facing the V & A Waterfront for excellent views.

Have a business trip one night stay in the hotel with great pleasure. Room was clean, spacious and has a small kitchenette which is much appreciated for the morning wake-up coffee!
Restaurant is as much as in the other kind of hotels, service friendly and good. Walking distance to the waterfront area with bars, shops and other activities.

Room Tip: Rooms with kitchenette, handy for the snack, breakfast or if you like to prepare meal by yourself.

Enjoyed the visit, however, mostly because of location and not because of what the hotel offered. We did stay in the only available accommodation in the hotel as they were fully booked. If we stayed again, which we may in the future, we would definitely book the superior room because it offers much more for only a small difference in cost. Definitely choose the superior room if it is available. You won't be disappointed. The restaurant food quality is poor, however, one can visit hundreds of restaurants in the area, even walking distance, or buy food at the supermarket and cook in the kitchen as their is everything you need to make your own meals including a stove. This is a place for adults and I would not recommend this hotel if you have children with you. Staff are very friendly. Management are professional and one is made to feel welcome.

I'd stay here again if I needed to save money for better accommodation elsewhere. There's a lot to see and do in Cape Town so we weren't in the hotel much. It was adequate. Clean. Comfy. Handy location.
