“Worst hotel I have ever stayed in, ever.”
Reviewed 30 June 2012

Very unhappy, was robbed in room when out for the day. Complained to manager, told me would take a long time to sort out. Avoided my calls and Would not return my calls. Very unsatisfactory and very disappointing. Would not recommend this hotel to anyone ever.

Terrible hotel. We stayed in 2 rooms. Both broken into. We did not leave valuables in room but they them stole our clothes. Most prob hotel staff. Management refused to deal with it or return calls, They said they would administer lie detector tests to staff. Complete bull. Hotel Completely in need of refurbishment. We could not sleep at night due to the noise of the wind. The rooms are very exposed and the glass is paper thin and rattles. The other room actually had water coming into the room from the rain. Breakfast was of a poor standard. Only saving grace was the restaurant but does not redeem the hotel. Would not recommend to anybody and nearly ruined our stay on cape town

The hotel has certainly seen better days. Door locks are still real keys - no card access system.

Overall the hotel is a tired and dated place. The free breakfast varied depending on how many guests in the hotel - the less guests - the less quantity and variety. Staff however were always helpful and friendly.

While towels were changed (or cleaned) daily - they were somewhat on the thin side.

TV in the room was a very old and worn out (about 22in) CRT - lousy color. Channel selection was also very limited. No bedside clock or radio and phone was opposite side of the room to the bed.

Needed to be a bit of an acrobat to get into or out of the bath/shower - shower pressure very weak and limited hot water.

Elevators very noisy - was constantly waiting for them to break down.

Best food value in the area was the Woolworths food store across the road - salads and other take out stuff available at reasonable prices. For foreigners (US/Canada/UK/Europe) eating out in SA is a bargain - a lot more expensive for locals..

Any noise in the corridor might have been directly in the room (same for next door).

Room had AC unit (never needed to use it) but no heating - would have been useful on a few nights.

Don't expect any pillow top mattresses.

Have definitely stayed in better hotels in US/Canada for a lesser $ equivalent price.

We stayed there on points - posted daily rate was R650/night (includes 'full' breakfast and parking extra R50/night). At the time we were there R700 was about US$ 90.

WIFI internet available at a price - you pre-pay for however many MB you want - better than the $/day model but not as good as free.

You do need a car if you stay there.

Little laundry just down the road where you can drop of your washing and get it back folded later in the day. R40 for first 4KG (about $5 for first 8lb) thereafter R10 ($1.25)/KG (2lb).

Supermarket just down the road - less than 10 min walk and drugstore on opposite corner.

Was advised not to drink the water - so bought bottled water (get it from the supermarket at about $2/gallon)

Room Tip: Make sure room is away from elevators.

Located in the very interesting suburb Seapoint and adjacent to the city and V&A Waterfront. Short taxi ride or healthy 3km walk. This is a comfortable hotel and the price is reasonable for what you get. Dont expect everything to be perfect, the shower may be weak, there may not be a remote control for the TV etc. etc. but it is still worth it and lots of other positives to be found . The staff have always met every request Ive made without any hassle. And when you get to know them, they are very friendly. The views are great from most the rooms. The revolving restaurant on the top epitimises the 1970's feel, though much renovations have obviously taken place to bring it to todays look since its grand inception back then. Breakfast on the 1st floor is very good and the adjacent pool is nice in summer. I would definitely stay again. If you want 5 stars, spend the big bucks and stay elsewhere.

The rooms were simply ok. Bathrooms were not very clean and felt a bit squeezed. I loved the view of the Table Mountain from my room and the surrounding area. Food wasnt that great- seemed to have problems managing dining when there were huge groups of people at the hotel. It is in a good location- waterfront is a near walking distance.

My husband stayed at this hotel for a month - and then I joined him for a 2 week holiday. The manageress was extremely helpful and any requirements immediately sorted out. It's a value for money hotel - a good base to go out for the day and come back to. Our room faced the pool - it was comfortable and clean - yes, the aircon is antiquated, but you pay for what you get! The breakfasts were more than adequate, the pool area very nice, the staff attentive. The lifts may be a little slow, but there are 4 of them, so you don't have to wait too long for one! Great value for money is the hotel shuttle bus to the airport. If you are looking for a value for money place to stay, then look no futher and still be surprised.

Room Tip: I would ask for a room overlooking the pool area - we were on the 7th floor which was lovely - great...

When we first drove up the Ritz we got quite discouraged. This hotel looks BAD from the outside. You can see that it once was a ritzy hotel but over the years has not been taken care of. The lobby, elevators and especially the corridors look a mess. The hotel room doors are paper thin and probably very easy to break in to. But then we opened our room door (room 1709) and we were amazed! The room was enormous, it had a living room with a kitchenette, a couch and a big TV. Then there was a big bedroom with another TV. Brand new separate toilet and bathroom with shower and because of the corner position of the room, windows everywhere with a lovely view of the town, mountains and ocean! We did not expect this! Apparently the owner had a bag of cash and decided to spend it on new furniture instead of maintenance of the building. You can debate whether that's a good choice or not.
Okay, there were some minor things: the air-con is old (straight from the sixties) and therefore it could only be turned on or off. There was mold in our coffee maker so we did not use it. There was a dirty sock from a former guest in the closet and one of the shower doors was broke so it could not be closed. But the only thing we complained about was the lighting. In all of the living room lamps they used these terrible energy saving bulbs that gave this harsh white office light. We complained about it and they brought a small lamp with a normal bulb. The lamp shade was torn up a bit, but we didn't mind.
The breakfast buffet is extensive, but the quality is not good. The coffee was undrinkable and there was no espresso or cappuccino available.
There's WIFI, but you have to pay for it. It's 50 Rand for 40 MB. Reception is quite good!
The pool area is alright.
Our guide explained to us the situation with the group of young African men that live in the Ritz. They are former child soldiers from Nigeria. The Nigerian government sent them to South Africa to give them a chance to study and make something of their lives. They pay the Ritz a staggering 500 dollars per man per day to give them shelter! I read a lot about these men in other reviews and wasn't comfortable with the idea. However, we barely saw them in the 3 days that we were there. They live on the first three to five floors, so ask for a high floor room and you will not be with them on the same floor. The elevator indeed is slow, but if you know this in advance and accept this, it is bearable. Not as annoying as I thought it would be.
The Ritz is situated in a suburb of Cape Town, far from the city center, but therefore it is safe to walk around at night. Around the corner are some restaurants, (gay) bars and a supermarket. If you have a car, it's easy to go everywhere you like, the Waterfront is just a short drive away. There is a parking garage in front of the hotel. It costs 50 rand a night, You could also just park outside, it's a quiet neighborhood that seemed safe enough.
All in all would stay here again!

Room Tip: Ask for one of the top floors, not on floors 1 to 5. Go for a corner room, they're huge and offe...
