“Scruffy hotel in a beautiful area of Cape Town”
Reviewed 30 October 2010

The hotel seems old, dirty and not looked after. If you are heavy on cleanliness, rather not stay there - I got bitten by bed bugs.
The rooms we stayed in were old, plumming in the bathroom terrible, bar fridges shockingly dirty (we couldnt dare put any food in).
The lifts are a problem, as it takes ages to get one and the creaking sounds makes it quite scary.
The breakfast is below average - huge oily dishes of bacon and sausages ect.
Unfriendly chef at the breakfast buffet!
Staff: Some do try to be friendly and helpful, but most are clearly incompotent and have no idea what goes on in the hotel.
The restaurant on the 21st floor: Excellent view, but as with the rest of the hotel, past ist prime with bad service and below average food - our patato bake tasted of burned charcoal. This is very sad, as I can imagine that this once may well have been a good hotel and restaurant. It is also excelently located, which is probably it's only drawcard and advantage.

We started off our trip to South Africa here. It was easy to find and short distance from the airport and good location to explore Cape Town. Parking was secure and easy with a very small charge. Check in was straight forward and the staff were friendly. The room was up on the 12th floor and the wind did whistle through a little but the room was clean and comfortable with a fair amount of space although a slight smell did waft up from the bathroom on the morning we left (nothing to do with me!)
Breakfast was a buffet do, the cooked stuff didn't look that appetising but their was a fair variety to choose from so was happy with that. The pool in the 1st floor also looked quite good but we didn't spend much time in the hotel as we were exploring the city. Basically a decent city hotel.

Hotel is in Sea Point - perhaps 30 mins walk from Cape Town's waterfront if you want to try that. Its not the best looking hotel being a big rectangular mosntrosity, but in terms of value it is great in relation to the big sums which can be expected for hotels in the Waterfront area. Rooms are adequate, not great, but being up on the hill mostly have good views. Enormous breakfast buffet was included in the price. Swimming pool looked like it might be in shad a lot of the day, but didn't swim in it. We booked through bookings.com and got an amazing rate - you'd probably have paid more just for the breakfast at some hotels! It has a revoving restaurant at the top and our experience of such is that they are usually overpriced and food quaklity poor - but not in this case. Great meal, spectaculat views, but unfortunately no Table Mountain view as Signal Hill in the way.

I would rate this hotel as good (between average and very good on trip advisor ratings scale). It's about a 30 minute walk from the hotel to the V&A Waterfront.
No real problems, but nothing quite right (except the rooms which were clean, well presented and properly made up each day), e.g. showerhead in bathroom was a head too low for me (I am 6ft tall, but I have not experienced quite such a low showerhead elsewhere). The breakfast was average in quality (although the selection was good) and you had to pay to use the hotel internet computers. The lift was relatively noisy - I could hear it very clearly (going up and down, not just when it stopped at my floor) in my room which was one room away from the lift (this did not disturb my sleep, but I could imagine would disturb some people). The room windows were not particularly clean (a shame given the superb view from mine) and the room lighting was too dim for comfort.

All in all, and considering the price I would recommend this hotel, but it could do better.

Stayed for the second year here. Basic clean good value for money given we only paid £14 pp pn bed and breakfast.
Location was ideal for us a nice sea front walk down to the waterfront, Buffet breakfast was excellent as was the choice of buffet evening meal down in the bar restaurant. The revolving 21st floor restaurant served meals for the more dis concerning diner. The bar staff really looked after us and were polite friendly and professional as were all the reception staff who checked flight times and ordered taxis as and when we needed. Pool area was cleaned daily and all the staff were approachable and helpful. The beauty clinic downstairs offered real value for money. Will definitely be going back next year to work our way through some more of Felix's cocktails.

After flight cancellations and re-routing, it was 60 (yes sixty) hours after leaving our home in rural Australia before we arrived at the Ritz. To say we were exhausted, dirty and desperately in need of a shower and bed was an understatement. We were greeted by a well mannered young man at reception and we noticed that our names were on a short list that he held. He showed this list to a (presumably) more senior woman and pointed to our names. "Just tell them" she snapped. He was embarrased and could not do so. She took over and officiously told us that we had been moved to their "sister hotel", in the Cape Town CBD. When we protested, she rudely told us that the hotel was full. She treated us like dirt.
We both suffer from breathing difficulties and lung conditions and had booked the Ritz as it was OUT of the CBD and we had read that we may be able to open the windows and avoid air conditioning which irritates our conditions.
We had booked and paid for our room in full - with Agoda - in October 2009 and our reservation was for four nights in March 2010. Our reservation had been confirmed at that time, but his woman did not care. She was absolutely horrible to us and arrogantly turned her back on us. I have written a review for Agoda but they did not post it on their website, despite awarding me the 500 points for the review. I would not like other travellers to be treated as badly by this woman who should never be wortking in the hospitality industry, so hopefully this review will be read on Trip Advisor.
We ended up at the St George's ("sister") hotel and were treated with great courtesy by all staff there. Unfortunately it was a fully air con hotel and we were unable to open the windows, thus irritating our already irritated lungs after long plane flights.
Another interesting fact was that we had booked a deluxe room at the Ritz and we noticed that the St George's hotel was advertising room rates considerably lower than the price we paid. I know this can happen, but it made us feel even more sadly ripped off.
Stay away.
