“A wonderful stay with the backdrop of Table Mountain”
Reviewed 13 December 2010

We recently stayed at this hotel for 7 nights on our first trip to South Africa. It was a perfect choice, right on the waterfront, many restaurants within walking distance as well as a large shopping mall & lots of entertainment. An easy base to arrange trips & a safe area, very convenient. The staff were very helpful & the breakfast was amazing, lots of different fruit juices & lovely fresh fruits, everything you could possibly want. Another bonus was the pool area situated across the road in a sister hotel. It was a very relaxing lovely area, lots of sunbeds & very few people, loved it!

The Victoria & Alfred is a lovely hotel. The staff were all top notch professionals and went out of their way to be friendly. On our first night. we were having trouble locating a restaurant on the waterfront that the concierge recommended and the bellman walked us to the restaurant himself. Our waiter in the dining room for brunch was Toni and he had a smile on his face and a glass of passion fruit juice for us every morning when we arrived.

The views and location are the best anywhere. Great hotel.

This was our first time in Cape Town and I have to say that staying at the Victoria & Alfred was a great choice! We were between the Cape Grace and the V&A (they are sister hotels) and decided to go with the V&A since it had a better price and it looked like a very nice hotel. Both hotels are right near each other, but the V&A is right on the Waterfront which makes it easy to get around. The rooms are very spacious and extremely clean. Some rooms have views of Table Mountain. The staff is excellent and is willing to help you with any of your needs. In particular, they planned a private tour for us to visit the nearby vineyards which was an excellent choice (and highly recommended!). Unfortunately we did not try the restaurant at the hotel since we went to local restaurants (some of which were recommended by the concierge). If you like Whiskey - definitely visit Bascule (which is in the Cape Grace Hotel). Overall, we were very satisfied with our stay at the V&A and would recommend this hotel to our friends and family!

We stayed at the Victoria and Alfred Hotel for three nights while doing the tourist route. The position of the hotel is perfect for anybody that wants to be in the Waterfront and close to the city centre. Our room faced Table Mountain and it was great to wake up in the mornings to see the mountain and working harbour.
The breakfasts in the mornings had a good spread and catered for most tastes. The large number of restaurants within walking distances ensures that you can choose from a variety of cuisines for lunch and dinner.

We checked in at this centrally located hotel on the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront after ten days in the South African bush. What a welcomed change! The hiotel staff could not have been nicer, very accommodating in every way. Our room overlooked the active harbour in the shadow of Table Mountain, what a beautiful sight! The quarters were spacious with a king-bed, down comforters, modern appointments including a 37"
flat screen TV. Our breakfast buffett was delicious each day offering a variety of cheeses, cold cuts, breads, cereals, fruits, condiments, beverages, etc., and very affordably priced. We visited Spier's Cheetah Sanctuary (about a 45 minute drive),
ate at "Moyo Restaurant" next door (great food), drove to Cape Hope, Cape Point and Boulders Beach to see the penguins. Our last day we drove about 20 muinutes to Table Mountain and went up to the top in a cable car--stunning views. We dined, shopped, and relaxed for four days before leaving for home. I would certainly recommend this
affordable hotel and if you can get a room with a mountain view---take it!

My husband and I stayed at the V&A Waterfront for four nights starting October 6th. Overall, our experience was positive, but there are a few things that should improve for a hotel in that price range. The positive points were : Fantastic location, good restaurant, exceptional breakfast, great view when you are on Table Mountain side, very comfortable, very good overall service. The things that did not go so well were: Wireless Internet in the rooms not working, toiletries only for one even if you are two, and not replaced if not completely empty (one day, we were even given half an individual (used?!) bottle of shampoo!). Furthermore, we had made an Internet booking ending with "your booking was successfully completed" but never received a reservation number. When we called, they did not have our reservation. We rebooked on the phone, and they sent a confirmation email with my full credit card details on it - which is definitely not safe!

For a hotel in this price range, the aggregation of deficiencies left me feeling I had wasted my money. I had a room on the top floor which only has skylight-type windows in the dormer area and just didn't give me the view I felt I was paying for. The porter who showed me to my room couldn't make the remote work that controlled the windows and never offered to try to get it fixed or replace it. The stopper in one of the bathroom sinks was jammed closed. The bathroom trash can was a cheap, metal step-on model with a badly dented and malfunctioning lid. The room was also on the end of the hotel closest to the waterfront which meant I had to suffer through the very loud German band playing drinking songs at a nearby restaurant long after I had turned in. When I expressed my disappointment at check-out, the clerk took down the complaints, which I delivered very politely and reasonably, but never even apologized or offered any redress. Attention to details separates good hotels from great ones and I'm afraid the V&A proves the point. There are many choices at the Waterfront in Cape Town - look elsewhere.
