“Great location for downtown Cape Town.”
Reviewed 14 August 2011

After an amazing private reserve in Sabi Sands, The Cullinan had a lot to live up to.

It is not quite in the same league as a private game reserve, but it nonetheless is a very well located and excellent hotel.

The staff were very friendly, attentive and helpful. The rooms were spacious enough to accommodate two adults and one child; and our three very large bags!!

Close to the V&A Waterfront and with a free shuttle service for guests running throughout the day, you have ready access to a wide range of restaurants and amenities.

It is also well located for any of the tours that any visitor to Cape Town may wish, whether it be Robben Island, Table Mountain or anywhere on the Cape, The Cullinan is perfectly situated. The only real problem is travel to it in the morning or at the end of the day on the N2, which gets really congested, otherwise the remainder of the day is pretty good.

We enjoyed our time here and when we return we will certainly be using it again.

The Cullinan Hotel is a favourite for me. I have stayed 3 times and the service never changes. Always Excellent in every way.

Rooms are nicely appointed, beautifully decorated and very comfortable. Buffet Breakfast is Fabulous!

Located near the V & A Waterfront Shopping Centre and wonderful restaurants. The Cullinan offers a daily Shuttle Service for their guests.

The Pool area is beautiful and a great place to relax, have lunch or enjoy a cocktail.

I highly recommend this hotel when visiting Cape Town.

The Southern Sun Cullinan hotel is a four star hotel in Cape Town. I stayed for five nights in this hotel (5th to 8th February 2011) when I attended the annual Mining Indaba conference held at the International Convention Centre.

The hotel is located opposite the Convention Centre – and about a ten minute walk to the Victoria and Albert (V&A) waterfront area where there are further fine hotels, restaurants, cafes, pubs, shops etc.

The bellboys at the hotel entrance are very helpful and have a cheery nature. As you enter the hotel, there is a very large marbled reception foyer with a huge flower display. I was amazed by the huge columns, the stylish décor, and the large metal works of art. If you walk straight on, you get to the swimming pool outside which looks very cool and inviting. One side of the pool has sun-bed loungers. The other side has tables and chairs with parasols. There was a separate reception desk near the pool for all the conference delegates.

My room (number 512) was adequately sized – not as big as I thought – but beautifully decorated. There was a king size bed and it was extremely comfortable. The lighting was such that it gave the room a very cosy feel. The room overlooked the pool area. There was a large TV with all the usual international channels. All the delegate rooms had a small gift from the sponsors. That was nice. Internet access was available in the room. There was a business centre available if needed.

The bathroom was really nice and luxurious. Almost like my bathroom at home. Enough said.

I had dinner at the restaurant at a late hour when the restaurant was quiet. There was a choice of buffet style food or you could ask for “a la carte”. I chose the King Klip – a white cod-like fish that was very tasty. The chef prepared and cooked it for me as I requested it. There was a wonderful array of desserts, which would you would find difficult to resist.

Breakfast is served in the same restaurant. You need to get there early or be prepared to queue up. Breakfast was buffet style. They had a large range of food on offer and you were really spoilt for choice. There were different types of cereals, fresh fruit (mangoes, apples, bananas, strawberries, pears, papaya, melons, watermelons and pineapples); Mediterranean style food (black and green olives, feta cheese, Greek yoghurt, cold salads of cucumber, courgettes, aubergine slices, red and green pepper medley, cold meat slices of chicken and beef); hot buffet that was “Halal” friendly for Moslems. There were hash browns, sautéed potatoes, chicken and beef sausages; porridge; waffles; chicken bites; smoked fish; baked beans; grilled tomatoes, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, poached eggs etc. You could even order an omelette cooked with a choice of fillings as per your wish.

I realise that the hotel staff had probably been instructed to be at their best because many different nationalities were attending the conference – and they had to pull out all the stops - but I feel sure that even if I were to stay at the hotel on another occasion, their genuine friendliness and courteousness would be evident. They are a credit to the hotel.

This hotel is ideally situated for the convention centre as well as the V&A centre which is a ten minute walk away - and the city centre which is about a 15 minute walk away. I would definitely recommend this hotel for both business and leisure trips.

My husband and I arrived here around 9am after a 14hr flight from Heathrow, exhausted and in need of a hot shower! At that time of day, we thought we'd have to wait until 2pm to check in.The Cullinan were excellent, they had our room ready and we got to check in straight away....bliss! Overall, we were very happy with this hotel, it was spotless, comfy bed, well located in the Foreshore area of Cape Town, so if you wanted to walk to the V&A, it would take about 5-7 minutes from here. The concierge service was excellent, they really helped us to get as much out of the city as we could in the 24hrs we had (We came back to CT at the end of the holiday, but stayed elsewhere) and the breakfast is EPIC!!

Perfect beds, perfect shower, perfect breakfast (all SORTS of variety--from perfectly prepared eggs to order, to numerous and varied hot and cold meats, to cheeses and yogurts, fruits, etc. etc.). It's a paradise inside.
But if you like to walk and wander you will lament that there are no restaurants within a safe walking distance at night. And, although the Capetown waterfront is a nice (2 km or so) brisk walk away in the daytime it can't be walked at night. The Cullinan has a free shuttle but directions to fijnding it on the waterfront for a return (after walking there) were flawed--took us to the other side of the waterfront--and no one in hotel pick-up areas there seemed to know where their stand was. It was, therefore, useless.
Back to the positives: the desk staff and other employees are enormously friendly and helpful. And, if you join their frequent guest program (no charge to join) you are entitled to two hours of free wireless access per 24 hours.

From being met at the Airport by Ian and being welcomed in a manner that felt as though I was family that had been missed.. To getting to the hotel and being checkin at the VIP counter, and just when one thought it could not get better you are offered a sherry to warm one up from the winter chills... On getting to my room, it was awesome, a perfect view and warm comfortable double bed.. Then the bathroom having a choice of a shower and or a bath.. Each time you ventured out into the hallways and staff happen to see you they immidiatly engage you to hera if you are happy and have everything you want.. This was truely a world class experience and would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for the perfect accommodation and location be it for business or pleasure..
