“Hotel well placed and well meaning”
Reviewed 5 January 2014

Spent run up to Christmas there, one week, and stayed over New Year for a week. Staff very kind and well meaning but service in restaurant, around pool and breakfast a little slow. The pool area is great, although getting loungers a little undersupplied. Lucky my wife is an early riser so getting there early is critical.
The positioning of the hotel great if you do not want to be on beach, perhaps that's a service they should offer (like the President hotel ) but they do offer a shuttle to the V and A waterfront BUT twice we had to get taxis back as it simply didn't arrive as per the schedule.

We arrived at the Southern Sun The Cullinan after a long overnight flight from Singapore. Although we arrived well before check in, our room was available and we checked in right away. The greeting from the receptionist was fantastic and it truly helped to get an amazing holiday started. This level of service was prevalent throughout our three days in this hotel. Although our room was slightly tired, it was clean and roomy and the staff were truly excellent. The shower in the bathroom was great. It was "Silkwood" powerful.

The breakfast buffet was excellent as well.

The location of this hotel is excellent. Although not at the waterfront, it is a very easy and safe 8-10 minute walk.

On our return to Cape Town, after traveling for a week around SA, we spent our final night at another hotel which was at the waterfront. This was a huge mistake. All we kept saying was that we wished we were back at the Southern Sun.

I don't believe this is considered a five star hotel however; it is an excellent hotel and the service is certainly five star.

We stayed here with two chidlren under 10 years of age. We had one room with two double beds and en suite. The room was a bit tired and dull. The room furniture is old. But the beds are comfortable and the linen is spotless. There were a couple of marks and stains on the carpet. It was, however, very clean and the bathroom was perfectly fine with an amazingly powerful shower. That is the only negative thing I can say. The rest was great. The staff are abundant and amazing. The pool was cold and a bit small but good and very adequate for my children and the sun loungers were lovely and the staff fussed about the area cheerfully delivering drinks and food all the time. Whoever conducts the staff customer training is fabulous at their job...because customer service is what this hotel does really really well. We were tourists so if you are reviewing this with a vacation in mind I will tell you it will suit you well. The red city hop on and hop of tourist bus stop is only few minutes flat and safe walk away. There is a taxi rank which is a minutes walk away with a constant line of nice official taxis waiting. If you are too lazy to walk to the taxi rank then the hotel will happily call one for you. We had the hotel meet us at the airport with a car which worked well as they came with a big vehicle which fitted all our luggage. The driver even turned up with baby seats as he said he wasnt sure how young our children were. ( How fabulous and thoughtful). Because we were so terribly jet lagged we were up at 5am on our first day and wandered down to the hotel lobby. We were too early for breakfast and asked the hotel reception if it was safe to take a walk outside in the bright morning sunshine. "Yes" was the cry "of course!. You can walk around the waterfront - there is security but its safe anyway and you can see all the seals sleeping on the dock by the yachts". So we did and it was. We walked down to the waterfront easily with children. There is a pedestrian bridge which runs from the side of the hotel over the big road and takes about 10-12 minutes and is a perfectly flat. I had noted on this site that people complained that the shuttle bus doesnt operate to the waterfront enough. I am at a loss to understand why you need it. We didnt use it once - Its very walkable distance and taxis are as cheap as chips so its not a big problem even if you are infirm. The hotel breakfast was great. So much variety. We were always there very early ( jet lag) and there was never a queue. The only group we saw at breakfast was the famous South African Platinum Spurs football team who were also staying there, although the dining room may have got busier later in the morning. The reception area is large and very grand and pretty and was nicely decorated for the Christmas season. The bar area is not tatty but it is rather austere with somewhat unwelcoming decor but the bar food was good and offered good casual tasty food- even for the children. We walked from the hotel to Budget rent a cars office to pick up our pre- booked rental car on the second day. The hotel staff directed us how to get there and It was just an easy safe 5-10 walk int eh early morning. We parked at the hotel. It was only 50 rand a day. There were children's activities organized but my children didn't attend any. I think how you rate a hotel sometimes depends on how much you pay and whether you feel you got value for money. We booked this hotel directly on their own webb site. http://www.tsogosun.com which was cheaper than booking direct by phone with the hotel ( !!)or using agoda.com or expedia.com - The prices were quite different so it was worth me taking time to check out what offered the best price. If you are looking to get an idea of location the Westin Hotel and the Protea North Wharf Hotel are all within a two minute walk of the Cullinan and the Convention Centre is less than a 5 minute walk. If I had unlimited budget I would have booked the Victoria and Alfred Hotel which is directly on the waterfront as the location is amazing with breath taking views. But we were very very happy with the Cullinan and have lovely memories. It was very very nice.

From the moment I checked in to the very last moment of my business stay I was thoroughly impressed with the room, the service and the food. Simply brilliant and I will be back. This must be the no 1 destination for business travelers and holiday makers in Cape Town

A wonderful hotel where the staff go out of their way to make the hotel experience special. I loved the separate shower in the bathroom. This is great especially when you are on a beach holiday. The shuttle to the waterfront is also a great advantage

The shuttle service was not up to standards. They were not always on time and when it did arrive, it was full with passengers from another hotel. I would suggest getting a dedicated shuttle for each hotel over the peak periods.
I found it silly that we had to pay for parking, it was just R50 a day. Surely you can just take that from the accommodation price??? There was alot of things for breakfast but the quality wasn't good, I think that can be improved on.
