“Interesting trip back into Victorian Cape Town of 1800's”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 February 2012

The Koopmans de Wet House is a old Cape Dutch house in the Central Cape Town business area and has been preserved as a stunning reminder of the old colonial Cape Town in Victorian times. It is furnished in the style of the early 1800's.

There are some interesting facts on the info posters in the house. It is a bit like walking back into history and I found it very interesting. The fee was only R10 (just over a dollar!) and it is not crowded at all - allowing one time to reflect a bit.

Tip: This is just down the road from the Lutheran Church in Cape Town - aks directions and do both on the same morning.

Have some time to kill in the City Centre, pop into this building and it will take you back to a bygone era of simplicity.

“Perfectly restored Georgian Town House”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 November 2011

There are many things to see in Cape Town but this is gem that seemingly gets missed. Set on one of the main streets in town it looks incongruous set next to the modern buildings. It has been well restored and the stories associated with those that lived in the house are well told on boards. It's a quiet place to spend 30 minutes or so and reflect and learn about the earlier history of the city.

“Fine example of period furniture”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 March 2009

I spent about an hour at the Koopmans-de Wet House while in Cape Town. Right on the corner of Strand and Long Street, it is easy to find and included in most tour books.

The "museum" is essentially the house as it would have looked in Cape Town and Strand Street circa 1800 or so, around the time of transition between the Dutch VOC period and British colonial rule. There are two floors to tour, the ground floor (drawing room, dining room, music room, etc.) and the first floor (linen room, pantry, upper hall, and library, etc.).

As someone who does not have a vested interest in the time period or furniture, my returns were somewhat limited. I think my experience could have been enhanced with an audio tour that "personalizes" the house along with historical commentary. Those who enjoy this type of decorative furniture may easily have a 4/5 or 5/5 experience.
