Definitely, this hotel is not part of a chain. The attentiveness of the staff, from check in to check out, is excellent. The rooms are a good size, and everywhere is kept spotless. We had a room overlooking Signal Hill, which was fine. There are a number of rooms, facing onto the courtyard. Between the windows of these rooms and the courtyard, is the ' corridor ' . I don't think that it would be a problem, but we prefered being able to open our window, and have a view, with no obstructions. The breakfasts are good, with the option of buffet, or menu ordering. The dinners, are exceptional, and not expensive. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. There is a free shuttle ( people carrier ) from the hotel to the V & A Waterfront and back, which when the hotel is quiet, can be booked as and when required.
There are very little options for eating out near the hotel. We only tried the chinese, 'Tao Yuan', in the direction of Camps Bay, and cannot recommend it. The V & A is the normal place to go to eat,( over 75 places to eat and drink ) but some are quite ' touristy '. As mentioned, the dinners in the hotel are excellent, and even the bar snacks are substantial and good. Sundays' are very busy, with the jazz brunch, and some diners and families, spend the rest of the day around the pool area.
Check out is at 10.30 but can be extended to 12 noon. There is a shower room adjacent to the pool area, where we were able to change in the late afternoon, for our flight home.
I don't think we will be going back to Cape Town, but if we did, we would definitely stay at Winchester Mansions, and have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone. All in all, a great hotel.

My fiance and I got married at the Winchester Mansions in December last year (2009). The service from the Winchester in organising and arranging the event was impeccable. The banqueting manager and her team were wonderful to work with and did a 5-star job. Our subsequent night stay in the hotel further confirmed my feelings on the place. It is an excellent experience with top-quality service to boot. I would recommend anyone who is visiting Cape Town go stay at "the mansions". If you like staying in a venue with a colonial feel but with a splash of Continental European flair, then the Winchester is the place.

We had asked our travel agent to include this hotel from finding out from it from another.

It is about 2 miles from the V&A waterfront - it took us about 40 minutes to walk there on our first morning. This to me was the only thing people may see as a drawback to the hotel. They do put a shuttlebus which we never had a problem booking though. The red hop off an hop on bus also stops right outside. The location does mean however that it is very quiet.

The hotel is set round a courtyard (which unfortunately we never got to use because of the weather) with views out the front of the sea (it is on the main beach road) or table mountain out the back. Our room was spacious with a very modern bathroom. There is turn down service every night where one night they left the remote control with the TV guide which I thought was a nice touch.

We didn't eat in the restaurant at night only breakfast but the breakfast was superb. At the end of our holiday after staying in some fantastic hotels we had our 'oscars' ceremony and the Winchester won best breakfast (no mean feat). The selection is superb - the usual hot and cold selections but you can also order eggs benedict, pancakes etc - all at no extra cost.

One huge bonus of this place is its proxmity to one of the best restaurants we have ever been to - Cedars. It is a Lebanese place - it is effectively in an office block - PLEASE don't be put off by having to go into the 'office' entrance and buzz up. The owner runs it and comes over and tells you that the menu is supplemented by what he has made that day, that he has been cooking since he was 10, and is a good cook. This is no false statement. The food is sublime - so so tasty and really good value. You feel really chuffed with yourselves for making the effort to find the restaurant.

So in summary, if you are happy to not stay at the V&A waterfront, this is a great option.

We stayed here 3 nights. I'm not sure what class of room we had, but it wasn't overlooking the water. The room was fairly small with very limited room for luggage. One nice touch was the carafe of lime flavoring with our water pitcher. For some reason, the lime flavoring wasn't refilled, so we had to go without the last 2 days. All the rooms surround the courtyard so it can be a bit noisy if people are hanging out at night. With our windows closed and the TV on, we couldn't hear anything though.

Except for the hotel's restaurant, no eating establishments were within walking distance. We ordered drinks at the restaurant and had to wait for more than 15 minutes for them to arrive (there were more staff than guests in the dining room, so I'm not sure what their problem was). The front desk staff said it wasn't advisable to walk outside after dark, so be prepared to call for the valet to bring your car or call a cab. They do charge for internet access on a very slow computer.

Hotel staff was OK - not overly friendly and the baggage guy was actually a bit aggressive, yanking luggage from our hands, demanding that he carry our bags the 20 feet to the car. Breakfast was impressive with lots of options, although they offer the same thing every morning. You would think they could at least cook the eggs a different way each morning or offer a different flavor of yogurt. Breakfast service was pleasant.

My husband and I stayed at the Winchester Mansions Hotel for 7 nights in total. Upon arrival the staff are very friendly and helpful. We were shown to our suite which overlooked the sea and was a lovelly room. ~Some may feel it is a little on the expensive side but compared to other 4-5* hotels i have stayed in in Cape Town the price is competitive. Breakfast was served in either their restaurant or canopied garden which was wonderful. The pool was secluded with nice touches like fresh drinking water and aftersun and suntan creams available. The new bar opened whilst we were there which proved very popular. Altogether our stay was very enjoyable and relaxing and we would like to thank all the staff for their assistance during our stay. We have stayed in Cape Town 4 times in various hotels and I have to say by far this is the nicest and friendliest. Thanks to all looking forward to many many revisits.

This beatiful hotel is of Cape Dutch architecture and in immaculate condition. It's located right on the sea front, about 5 minutes drive from the waterfront. We ate at the hotel and in city. The meals in the hotel were very good and the service we received from the staff was first class. The hotel operates a courtesy minibus so you can leave your car in the secure car park and use that to visit the city. On arrival we were given complementary tickets for an open-topped bus tour of the city - which turned out to be excellent and is highly recommended.
