“Sublime Silvermine”
Reviewed 25 April 2014

Silvermine is one of those very special places for everyone - dogs and kids included. Essentially its a great dam, with lots of excellent rocks to jump off, surrounded by fynbos, lillies, occasional ducks or geese and lots of icy mountain water.

If its a hot day, one needs to get there early to bag one of the "must have" picnic spots under the trees on the far side. If you don't get lucky there, there meander around the dam and spot a site lucked into the rocks or higher up on the path. There is a great 20 minute easy boardwalk around the whole of the dam for the less athletic (or smaller) visitors and I believe its wheelchair friendly too.

Don't pack too much in the way of food and stuff, its a 500 odd meter uphill walk so take what you can comfortably carry. Its closer enough you can always nip back to the car if you really need something. Bring warmer swimming stuff, our kids swim in their wetsuits and I swim in a surf vest.

“SILVERMINE NATURE RESERVE”
Reviewed 24 April 2014

Wonderful place for families (including dogs if you have an activity permit - obtainable from Tourism offices) to enjoy all the best things nature has to offer. Walking along the beautiful river walk, picnic and swim at the dam, mountain bike on the amazing tracks they have allocated to cyclists, walk to the top and enjoy a vista of Hout Bay, Noordhoek and Kommetjie. Take a picnic along to rest and enjoy this wonderful peaceful spot right in the middle of the city. Just be sure that if you want to walk dogs or cycle you need an activity permit which cannot be purchased at the gate.

“Awesome picnic spot”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

Beautiful location for a day trip and picnic. We swam in the freezing cold dam and warmed up on the rocks. The reserve is home to South Africa's national flower - the Protea which is beautiful to see and photograph

“Excellent Walking trails and views”
Reviewed 19 April 2014

excellent walking trails - best option is from the Arboretum in Tokai to avoid the excessive entry fee at the main gate. From there one can easily walk to Elephant's Eye or the dam for a picnic.
Want to skip the fee, on the other side of the u Kaapse Weg one can enter for R5 - from there one can walk to Muizenberg or Kalkbay - many options or just a circular walk.

“Excellent Walks”
Reviewed 16 April 2014

For those visitors who like to put on some hiking shoes and take to the mountains, there are some excellent walks in Silvermine. One can do an easy one hour river walk or start at the dam and walk to Elephants Eye which overlooks Constantia Valley (approx 2 hours)
