We booked An African Villa for the first week of a five week holiday involving our wedding in Franschhoek, then our honeymoon, then back to Cape Town. We stayed there with my family and friends who were visiting Cape Town for the first time. All together we were quite a big group but were looked after amazingly well by the African Villa crew.

I have been to Cape Town many times before and stayed in various different hotels and B&B's (my husband is south african and very fussy!) and I can safely say that we've found our favourite place to stay from now on.

Firstly, the staff are amazing. Honestly the most accommodating, friendly and helpful people I think I've ever met whilst staying in a hotel. The breakfasts are just out of this world! (my mum still goes on about them). Believe all the reviews about the pancakes, they are amazing. And the setting by the pool is such a lovely start to the day. The rooms are lovely, bright, modern and homely.

One of the many brilliant reviews of this hotel said likened it to "Staying at a rich friends villa in Cape Town". I couldn't agree more! We will be back again and again.

Stayed: December 2008

An African Villa -- made up of three Victorian townhouses that have been renovated and melded into one establishmnet -- offers the best city lodging that we have found during seven trips to South Africa. From Louis Nel, Jimmy van Tonder and Keith and Cynthia Whitfield, the welcoming, helpful and enthusiastic owners/managers, to the spacious, comfortable bedrooms, we could not have asked for more.

As soon as we entered An Africa Villa, I knew we had arrived at a special place. The decor in the public rooms blends contemporary furnishings with African artifacts, such as colorful, highly polished ostrich eggs, myriad baskets, Masai spears and much more. The ambience is simple but elegant. This theme continues in the 12 bedrooms.

My husband and I stayed in a standard room (superior and classic are also available), which was on the ground floor, overlooking the street and adjacent to a large sitting/reading room. We never heard noise from these areas. Our air conditioner (a necessity in the Cape Town summer) worked well. The high-quality linen and pillows on the firm king bed contributed to excellent sleep each night. Two easy chairs, a long table (perfect for using our laptop), a flat-screen TV, and an amoire, which contained a safe and plenty of storage space, added to the room's comfort. The long, narrow bathroom included two counter-top sink bowls, a large shower and plenty of complementary toiletries.

Two computers await guests at no charge in one of the sitting rooms. An adjacent cabinet displays a variety of reasonably priced items, such as tribal masks and Ethiopian crosses. The two sitting rooms have complementary brandy and port available.

In the morning, a cold buffet covers two kitchen counters and orders are taken for hot breakfasts. The weather allowed us to sit outside and eat at tables set up near the plunge pool.

The owners stood ready to assist guests in any way possible. For example, Louis checked on a rental car for us; ensured that the box of summer clothes that we sent ahead made it through
bureaucratic red tape; and recommended restaurants and made reservations for us. Jimmy got us the best view seat in the house at Baia Seafood Restaurant on the waterfront. We sat there mesmorized by Table Mountain and the clouds draping this landmark like a blanket thrown over the back of a chair.

An African Villa stands in a safe, quiet section of town, where we walked to nearby restaurants after dark. During the day, we walked Downtown, cutting through the back of the nearby posh Mount Nelson Hotel, in about 10 minutes. Cab fares to places further away are reasonable. It cost about $5 (U.S.) to go from the hotel to the waterfront. There is also free street parking by the hotel.

The whole experience at An African Villa proved to be outstanding for us and a good value at less than $100 (U.S.) a night for a standard room. We wish that our schedule had allowed us to stay longer than three nights

We stayed in the Villa for two nights and found it to be an excellent standard of accomodation given its location close to CT centre and the table mountain cable car. It is within close walking distance of a buzzy area with includes many restaurants and bars yet the Villa itself is on a quiet residential street. The street itself has great old buildings off which the Villa is three renovated houses.

The decor is african styled with lots of african art throughtout. They have two computers for guest use and free internet access. We found this a great amenities for keeping our 12yr old son entertained in the evenings.

Breakfast was served on the pool terrace and has a view of Table mountain from many of the tables. Louis booked a great restaurant for us on the first night, Millers Thumb.

Only downside was that the pool wasn't particlarly inviting. It could have been cleaner when we were there, a lot of floating vegetation and was slightly cold and concrete looking. The area around the pool was beautifully styled.

We tried to book a third night but it was booked out. I was not surprised given the standard of the accomodation!

This hotel is a gem. You feel at home immediately and are greeted with a warmth that i have never felt in any other hotel i have ever stayed. The owners were helpful and gracious, the rooms beautiful, the food was fantastic and I cant recommend this hotel highly enough. We're definately going back and even though we've just returned, I'm looking forward to it already! In our opinion, it should be number 1 on Trip Advisors list!

Stayed at the Villa for 8 nights over Christmas and New Year. All the previous reviews detailing services and photos of the Villa are absolutely how the place is. The service we received was impeccable from all of the staff, the quality of furnishings were as great as shown in the visitors pictures and the location was quiet. The best thing about the place was the personal service given by the 4 people who run the Villa - on arrival we were given a comprehensive info pack about the city and a list of restaurants that guests had consistently reported were good + they politely suggested some we had read about were not as good - exactly what you need from hosts. Every day when we talked about our plan for the day they gave items of important information to make our stay in Cape Town more enjoyable. I cannot recommend this place highly enough - it will make your stay in Cape Town a more 'real' experience of the city

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
This Villa is much more than that! It is in fact three houses which are part of a Victorian terrace dating from 1892. The double story houses have been joined together and so the inside spaces are much larger than the facade suggests. It's like walking into a TARDIS someone has written on Tripadvisor! There are 12 rooms and the hotel is owner managed.Location is vital when choosing a spot for you vacation and this more than a Villa is within an easy walk of all tourist attractions in the city area. The others (like the fabulous beaches) are a short taxi ride away. There is a small plunge pool in a peaceful courtyard where a very full breakfast is served in summer. (In winter there's a sociable dining room and an eco-friendly fire blazing). Your hosts are very careful to offer you as much information as you want and they will arrange car rental, restaurant reservations, tours etc. As required.Free internet on 2 computers in a library area and wireless access is available in all rooms. At night the night porter will set out complimentary sherry and port and at other times there is an honesty bar and guest fridge in the kitchen. Parking is on street and there is no charge (street guards patrol) but you should not need a car from this well placed hotel. ... more   less
