Owner description: The Iziko South African Museum houses more than one and a half million specimens of scientific importance. The collections now range from fossils almost 700-million years old to insects and fish caught last week. There are also stone tools made by people 120 000 years ago, traditional clothes from the last century, and T-shirts printed yesterday. The Planetarium, which is housed in the South African Museum building, is a celestial theatre in the round, utilising the complex Minolta star machine and multiple projectors to transport the audience through the wonders of the universe. The ultimate in armchair travel.Inside the domed auditorium, we can recreate the night sky, so whatever the weather outside, the Planetarium sky is always clear, an extraordinary audio-visual experience for old and young.

This place is great and so cheap! best rainy day activity we did in the city. Give yourself plenty of time because you will want it!

Visited the museum with my four year old son and we loved the marine and jurassic exhibits. Very interesting both for children and adults alike. The cafe offers a quick bite which can be had in the company gardens just outside. Worthy stop on the red route of the hop on hop off bus.

Every exhibit has been carefully mitigated and displayed to ensure maximum conservation and understanding. Some have a real colonial feel - which is charming. Worth a 3 hour visit.

So glad to hear you enjoyed your visit with your grandchildren Jenny! Don't forget that on Women's Day, 9 August, entrance to ALL our museums is free (excluding the Castle of Good Hope and Planetarium) so do bring the whole family along for another visit :)
