Owner description: The Iziko South African Museum houses more than one and a half million specimens of scientific importance. The collections now range from fossils almost 700-million years old to insects and fish caught last week. There are also stone tools made by people 120 000 years ago, traditional clothes from the last century, and T-shirts printed yesterday. The Planetarium, which is housed in the South African Museum building, is a celestial theatre in the round, utilising the complex Minolta star machine and multiple projectors to transport the audience through the wonders of the universe. The ultimate in armchair travel.Inside the domed auditorium, we can recreate the night sky, so whatever the weather outside, the Planetarium sky is always clear, an extraordinary audio-visual experience for old and young.

“Great Museum, seems world class”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

Been there a couple of times over the years and always educating and enlightening. the kids love the place with the large scale models. the planetarium show is also fascinating. if you are into museums, then make sure not to give this one a miss. the adjoining company gardens is also great and the arts museum is meant for a mature audience. you can park close by and this is an added bonus. have not seen many museum overseas but this seem world class.

“Surprisingly good”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

I took my daughter to watch the kids show and found that I enjoyed it very much. It was my first time visit to a planetarium so I was not sure what to expect. Apart from the museum the show is really the highlight. They have different shows for different levels of audience and I will be sure to go back the next time I am in town.
Handy hint ... the parking at the planetarium is free.

“S A Museum and Planetarium”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

It has been one of three mainstays of museums in central Cape Town.

Its a museum with sometimes unusual displays and also features the Planetarium which offers short courses of learning more of the night sky.. All very well done .... I have been several times over the years .... Would recommend this gracious building and its contents.

Sometimes these have included amazing displays of old artefacts, old maps, displays of species, with good informative annotations and captions. Always informative.

“Interesting and enlightening”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

A good place to visit at a leisurely pace. The exhibits were quite well presented and informative although the route through could be confusing and the risk of missing certain parts high if you were on a tight schedule. Personally I found the section on African & South African history to be most enlightening. Unfortunately some parts were under construction and so not available. Nevertheless it was an afternoon well spent. Well worth a visit if you allow enough time.
By the way, with lifts & ramps throughout, the entire place is wheelchair friendly.

“Fascinating Museum”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

I visited this charming museum out of curiosity on the final day of my visit to Cape Town as it was opposite my hotel. It is small by the size of others I have been to, but nevertheless it was still an interesting place to visit.

I found especially fascinating the exhibition about the ancient history of Southern Africa. I have a keen interest in history and although I have been to some great museums, this is a topic I have never had much of a chance to experience. The exhibit is unique and has some very interesting artefacts on display. I feel like I learnt a lot and I enjoyed seeing the ancient history of the area. Other exhibits in the museums were not quite as unique but were still nice to see.

It is definitely worth a visit for a few hours if you are in the area. It is central and easily accessed by the sight seeing buses that stop right outside. However I would recommend if you are short of time to see all of Cape Town, only visit if you have time and not to miss out on other sights.

The admission cost is reasonable and it is neighboured by a beautiful park that adds to the inviting nature of the museum.
