“Definately the place to stay in Cape Town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2012

We stayed in Big Blue Hostel at the very end of our trip travelling from Malawi to Cape Town and decided to treat ourselves to a private room. (Judging from other reviews, maybe that's the secret!) Crisp white bed sheets, big fluffy white towels and high ceilings; it was more like staying in a hotel, but with hostel prices!

Admittedly, there wasn't much of a "party vibe" at this hostel, but it was the perfect base for us to explore the city. The waterfront is just 5 minutes walk away and the city centre and beaches are all within easy walking distance.

I've already recommended this hostel to friends and will certainly return on my next trip to Cape Town!

We left our valuables in the safe at the big blue backpackers and have now realised that our credit cards have been used to book flights and dinners within South Africa starting from the date we stayed. Please, if you decide to stay in this dingy place DO NOT leave anything in the safe!

Good luck.

This hostel was ok, the best part was our room (which was a private one), but the people were not great, and it wasn't that clean and it didn't have a fun atmosphere at all. We mostly ended up staying in our room, but you can literally hear every little thing in those rooms, not sound proof at ALL. It felt like they were being pretty cheap about the whole place. It was an ok location if you don't want to be right in the busy party area, its about a 20 minute walk to the main stretch, but its a bit closer to the waterfront (10-15 min walk). Wouldn't stay here again, but it was ok.

I have never been disappointed by a place to stay like i was with this big blue thing. When we arrived to this place we were not shown the place where we were going to sleep in before we paid and what a disasterous room.We had booked a female dorm and it was soooooooo small ,the bunks we literally squached to fit there, to make matters worse the door opens straight to the common eating area ,and to go to the bathroom we must go past the people who are eating ,What a shame,

We ask the lady who recieved us if she can do something ,what we got was "you can leave if you don't like your room",with an attitude.

Thank God we were able to find another accomodation the same night at Check Inn .The Big blue i was not going to book it even if it was offered to us free of charge. The attitude of the Manager was so bad I don't even understand how a person dealing with people can be so rude ,if you want my advise ,stay away from this place the dorm in the pictures is not what you find there.Big dissappointment .

Room Tip: my advise will be book another place not thid Big Blue, there are many other cheap places to stay in...

We stayed here for 3 nights with a large tour group. Some people had to wait until 7pm for their room to be ready. There were not enough staff to accommodate for people who wanted drinks, information, taxis or any information. It was frustrating however we still had a good stay. We could walk to the waterfront & the rooms were nice & clean. Don't think we would go back.

Stayed here twice, nice relaxed backpackers. It was clean and tidy, and spacious. Rather haphazard service from staff, but all in all good.
First room had extremely creaky floorboards, which was fine for us, but we worried about disturbing others.
Safe and secure, with a night guard...
