“a good place to stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 February 2013

a good place to stay, friendly staff and just 10 minutes walking to sea point, 15 to waterfront.
Free internet, you will miss it in others hostels in Cape Town, a bar open until 11 pm tv and dvd in the common area.

Relaxed place, staff is really helpful and the food was good. It's walking distance from a lot of places and hikes in Capetown. Keep in mind, it's a hostel so it's not super fancy but good value for this. Enjoyed my stay and would recommend it.

we stayed 3 nights in a double room en suite, which was clean , nicely decorated, quiet. The only problem was the cold but they lent us an electric heater! the R20 breakfast was fine muesli, yogurt, cheese , toast and jam.Everyone was friendly.

This hostel is more like a hotel in many ways. It’s a gorgeous Victorian mansion modernized into a beautiful but affordable place to stay. I found it spotlessly clean, with lots of nice touches like fluffy blankets and nice clean quality towels. The location was great - walking distance to the Waterfront, stadium, etc. Oh and they had FREE Internet via a few computers for guests to use, which pretty much blew my mind. If you’ve traveled Southern Africa, you know you will typically be paying quite a lot for Internet - if you can even get it at all.

Small but lovely private rooms are available (with private washroom/shower). I booked one my first couple nights at Big Blue as a treat after weeks of camping/cramped and dirty hostels, and then realized the dorms were basically empty since it was low season, so I moved into one. For five nights I was the only one in a massive, beautiful room. Even if it had been full to capacity (I think it had about 10 beds), it still would have felt way less crowded than most hostels I’ve stayed in. Very spacious and lockers were provided by the beds, which is great (bring your own locks). There was also a nice little plunge pool in the courtyard beyond the bar - wish it’d been warm/sunny enough for me to use it!

Even though I thought Big Blue was fantastic value and a great hostel in and of itself, it was the unbelievably kind, helpful staff that made this place truly memorable out of the many, many places I stayed during my 7-week trip. When I had an unfortunate incident occur that could have really tarnished my stay in Capetown, the staff at Big Blue were very considerate and kind about it, helping me sort out alternative payment arrangements, contact local police, etc.

Then, after I got home and realized I’d left a diamond ring in the shower at Big Blue (yep, I suck), I thought I’d definitely seen the end of it. Lo and behold, someone - likely a member of the staff/cleaners as there was barely anyone else staying - had actually turned it into the front desk; and over the next TWO MONTHS, one incredibly helpful staff member (might have been the owner/manager?) took the time to help me look into options for shipping the ring home, gave me advice on mail processes in South Africa, and, finally, posted the ring himself when no company would do it for less than a small fortune. I really cannot believe that any business/employee would do such a thing when there is no foreseeable gain in it for them. I was really touched and have never had such a degree of kind customer relations from a luxury hotel, let alone a hostel.

I’m now trusting to the mercy of the postal system - but whether or not the ring makes it back to me in Canada, THANK YOU, BIG BLUE for being so great! I will definitely be back next time I am in Capetown.

We stayed in Big Blue Hostel at the very end of our trip travelling from Malawi to Cape Town and decided to treat ourselves to a private room. (Judging from other reviews, maybe that's the secret!) Crisp white bed sheets, big fluffy white towels and high ceilings; it was more like staying in a hotel, but with hostel prices!

Admittedly, there wasn't much of a "party vibe" at this hostel, but it was the perfect base for us to explore the city. The waterfront is just 5 minutes walk away and the city centre and beaches are all within easy walking distance.

I've already recommended this hostel to friends and will certainly return on my next trip to Cape Town!
