Big Blue Backpackers
Reviewed 9 January 2014

The Big Blue is a very friendly hostel, and we had a lot of fun there. It's great for meeting other travellers as it's indeed big (always lots of people around), and has a great common area - bar, pool, tables, sofas+tv, etc. The location is great, a short walk from the Waterfront, with restaurants and bars around, and also within walking distance from Long Street (where most of the bars and clubs are). It would be nice if the internet was improved, but oh well, there were indeed too many people using it at the same time when I was there.

My boyfriend and I stayed 3 nights here in a private en suite room for R330 per night. This is great value for a CT backpackers, especially one in such a great location (10 min walk from waterfront and so easy to get anywhere in town by foot from here) but the backpackers wasn't without it's downsides. Pretty grubby and run down, staff not very friendly or helpful, and people who seem to stay there for long periods of time and act like you're invading their own home are all things I didn't like about this place. On the positive, location perfect, our room was clean and very quiet, the bathroom was huge with a great shower, internet good (but didnt reach to our room). If you want to be slap bang in the middle of town, don't mind a no frills place and are on budget it's a good choice, but if you've got a car or you don't mind taking taxis you should stay at Observatory Backpackers for just R100 per night per double more, it's nicer but slightly further out of town.

Six years ago Big Blue was a really nice place. It's still OK, and the location near the Waterfront is good, but it's starting to look a bit more run-down now. Cleaning of the shared toilets was however very well handled and we can't complain about the people in the reception. Nice with ceiling fan.

Great service from my booking up to arrival. I enjoyed my stay thoroughly. Backpacker is close to V&A, stadium and you can catch a bus or taxi to Camps Bay or stroll down to the City Centre. Free coffee and tea :) even after check out was a bonus. Friendly staff.

I can agree with the other reviews. There seemed to be a lot of people staying long term in the hostel. This, at times, meant that you can feel like you are invading someone's living room! However for the most part people were friendly. There was nice lounge area to sit in. There was free wifi. The room I stayed in was clean and sizeable. The location, about 5 minute walk from the waterfront was excellent.

Very cheap and clean private rooms. Not many showers to share around but we managed to find an empty one most mornings. The best aspect here is the location just 5 mins walk to the V&A and a little further into the city centre. Very quiet street so we seemed to sleep well. One word of advice; ditch the hostel breakfast as there are great coffee shops within a minutes walk with great coffee, muffins etc for next to nothing. Would def recommend this place if you are after a budget room in a central location.

Two things stand out for me at Big Blue Backpackers:

1) The front desk staff are NOT very helpful, and when they are, it is based purely on whether they like you or not and not on any service based requirement where everyone should be treated equally.

The one receptionist, vacillates between indifference to coming across as depressed on most days and battles to make eye contact with the guests.

The other one just looks thouroughly bored.

The owner himself is known for having bouts of extreme moodiness and then taking out his issues on the receptionists, often berating them in full view of other guests and being totally oblivious to the fact that he is emotionally abusing his staff.

The upside is that there is access to Internet facilities (NOT 24 hour and fast as vikki_sanchez would have you believe).

It is conveniently located 15 minutely walk from the V & A Waterfront and Cape Town Stadium where most international concerts are held.

So, if you can deal with the fickle receptionists whose moods change and depend on how they themselves are being treated by the owner, it's all-in-all an okay place to stay.

Room Tip: Stay away from dorms for long stays. Some of the guests are not into good personal hygiene and tend...
