When we woke up to a clear sunny morning our first day in Cape Town we knew we should make our visit to the top of Table Mountain right away. We had debated making the hike to the top, but with only a few days in Cape Town we opted to take the speedier cable car, and I'm glad we did. The cable car was fast and easy with great views. We did not book our tickets in advance.
Once at the top we enjoyed a hot morning beverage in the cafe which has a lovely view. If I had known there was a restaurant up there we'd have arrived sooner and had breakfast up there. I also think drinks before sunset there would be fantastic. There is also a gift shop up there.
We took the guided walk at 10 am, they are offered hourly. It was all of 15 minutes. Some good tidbits about the mountain, but very skip-able.
After the guided walk we walked the long loop ourselves, which was great. Very flat easy walk, but spectacular views and lookout points.
All told we spent about 2 hours from the time we reached the mountain to the time we got back to our car. I don't see the need for anymore time than that, at least in the off season. Parking was very easy when we arrived, but it looked like it backs up a bit as the day goes on. Just be prepared to have to park a bit further away and walk.
