We spent about 2.5 hrs hiking Lions Head on a beautiful Sept. afternoon. The trail starts out rather smooth and wide but it soon changes. It gets steep and a bit challenging but not too hard for a pair of 67 & 69 yr olds. There are iron ladders embedded in the rocks in a few spots where needed. This was a first for us. Then there are sections where there is really no clear path but large rocks to climb over. Finally you reach the top with a 360 degree view of Capetown. At the top you can reward yourself with a snack if you carried one and just sit back and enjoy the view. On the way back down we watched a paraglider take off and ride on the thermals. I would suggest you dress in layers and bring sun screen, water and a snack. Hiking Lions Head is a great way to spend an afternoon in Capetown.

I live in Cape Town and have done the Lions Head climb over 30 times and never get tired of it. Last trip I took my 7 year old daughter with me and she managed fine. Safe hike and not to advanced. The views are amazing and give you a full panoramic view of the city as you spiral up to the summit. Best to do the hike early in the summer months before it gets to hot as the trip is exposed with little shade on offer. Late afternoon and night trips are popular. If you looking for a bit of a party, every full moon about 2000 people hike up in the late afternoon to watch the sun set and the full moon rise. You hike down in the darkness and can be done without torches depending on cloud cover. This trip should be on every able bodied tourists list of to do's when visiting the city if Cape Town.

Relatively short spiral climb. It does get quite steep towards the summit but the view at the top is worth every drop of sweat. If you're lucky you might get to witness the paragliders taking off half way up the climb. Could be done in the dark with the assitance of a torch as is common on full moon nights. Would probably recommend this over Table Mountain itself.

Easily accessible spiral hike to the top. Upper part a bit of scramble , chains, ladders a exposure.
