I am not a morning person. Not even a little bit, so that's no excuse. Climbing Lion's Head to watch the sunrise at the top is phenomenal. This activity was surprisingly popular. There's no need to book a tour - the path is very obvious and you can do it yourself. Take water. Find out what time the sun rises and aim to get to the base about 1hr 15 before.

The climb itself require a certain level of fitness. There are parts where you are rock climbing, not hiking. If you're lucky, there's a chain that you can hold onto whilst you hoick yourself up. Other parts have stirrups that you can use as a leg up. It's a lot of fun, and nothing beats the views from the top. The sun rises over the mountains in the background and goes through phases of different colours.

Been up Lion's Head a few times now. Climbing the peak is more of a walk apart from the last 15-20 min which involves some climbing but it is definitely worth the view from up there. This is definitely a don't miss in Cape Town.

Perfect walk on a sunny Saturday. The most incredible views of Clifton, camps bay and the city on the walk as well as from the top. I've only ever done the "chains" route where you have to climb a portion of the mountain via chains. A reasonably easy walk, and usually busy in season.

We were happy that we did this trail. My wife and 3-year old daughter went up as high as we could on a lovely sunny morning. The trail becomes challenging (with a young child) as you progress. But it's totally worth it and no point giving up at any time. There's nothing you pay for this wonderful treck. It takes up to 2 hours at least (with children).

We love hiking when we travel and since we had a sunny (but windy) afternoon available decided that Lion's Head looked like a good option. The trail is very well marked, somewhat groomed at the lower elevations where protea were just blooming. As you go higher, the path narrows and has ladders in places where you'd otherwise need climbing experience to continue on. There's a short cut toward the top that takes you up rungs and lengths of chain drilled into the rock for hand and foot holds. That can feel a bit hairy, but well it's worth the effort. 306 views from the top of Cape Town and across to Table Mountain.

There are parking guides at the base to help you locate a space since that can be a bit of a challenge on busy days.
