“Super fun place to stay on Long Street”
Reviewed 25 April 2013

LOVED staying here. The rooms are all really fun and decorated differently. The staff were extremely nice and helpful. This place is not five star luxury and it's also not backpacker messy-- perfect medium place. Great location, can't say enough wonderful things about the staff. HIGHLY recommend to all.

We stayed in the Emergency Room - not the most relaxing atmosphere, but we loved it. This isn't the hotel for people who need to be in the lap of luxury, but it's perfect for people with a sense of fun and an appreciation for art. Staff were helpful and we were welcomed with a complimentary drink. We loved the location on Long Street, close to great bars, restaurants, and shopping. We'd definitely stay here again.

If this were being reviewed solely as a hotel, it would be tempting to rate it three (average); if it were being reviewed solely as an experience/place to visit/attraction/art installation, it would get a five (excellent). Hence, a four.

As a hotel, it is pretty basic - all rooms have a bed, toilet, shower, safe, and aircon; some rooms have (to match their theme) a little extra. The beds are comfortable; the showers and toilets all worked. Mints were in abundant supply. The bar was quite nice, and the staff were tremendously helpful. Some rooms (facing Long St) could be a little noisy because of construction works opposite, but that will stop one day. It's location was advantageous - on Long St, a street full of shops, restaurants and bars, but away from the noisesome parts, it seemed (except for the construction work).

As an art installation, it is incredible. As everyone points out, each room is unique. Even though it can be a hassle to pack up every day, strongly recommend changing rooms each night (where possible). To describe the rooms in too much detail might be to give too much away, and also to do them an injustice, but The Emergency Room, You Are Here, Do Not Disturb, and Outside were all excellent interpretations of themes. (Palimpsest can be added to the list, but the door to the bathroom was glass and it seemed to be the smallest of the rooms, so hotel-wise it was not as comfortable.) It is entirely worthwhile staying here - even if not for the entirety of your stay in Cape Town - just to experience some of the rooms.

This is no luxury, high-class, high-service hotel, but for well travelled and more adventurous people this is the place to stay in central Cape Town.

A warm and friendly reception. Besides being safe and clean, the rooms are an experience by themselves. Each is uniquely designed by different artists. We got the karaoke room called "Do not disturb" which is filled with microphones, even in the bathroom. None of us are any karaoke singers, but we had to try this one. At least it sounds better when singing karaoke from the showers :)

Location is great for exploring the central areas of Cape Town, and are within walking distance of all good sites. The entrance street feels safe, even during evenings, and there are some very good restaurants nearby.

The breakfast deal with the downstairs cafe is however nothing to go for. The cafe is all good, but we found better options by just buying directly from the cafe.

We chose to stay in a different room every night and had the excitement of opening a door to a new world each afternoon. Imagine stepping into a room with fake grass on the floor and microphones dangling from the ceiling, or walking into a kinky red hospital room with mirrors everywhere, or a room decorated with beautiful sunsets, or a Paris-style bohemian loft. We are definitely not backpackers and this is definitely not a backpackers - I can't understand why some people call it that. It's clean, super stylist, staffed 24 hours a day, and the people who stay here are not ultra-young cheap travelers.

The location is the other highlight of this hotel. Long Street is a bustling street lined with funky cafes, restaurants and shops. It has a slightly seedy edge but there are public security staff everywhere so we never felt unsafe. You can walk to many, many excellent restaurants and cafes, the Company gardens and markets are a couple of blocks away, and the hop-on-hop-off bus (this is a must) stops two blocks away.

I would recommend physically looking at your room before deciding which one to stay in particularly if functionality is important to you (these are art installations first and foremost). For example, the rooms vary greatly in - size of bed (double up to king sized), degree of privacy in the toilet, degree of ability of the blinds to block out sunlight, ability to access power-points, and room furniture like bedside tables. Most rooms were quiet from the street. The only noise we got was occasionally from other guests stomping around in the room above us and talking loud as they entered and exited their room.

Suggestions for improvement are upgrading all double beds to queens, providing information about the artist behind each room and the room's design, providing instructions for the karaoke machine in "Do not disturb", installing block-out blinds in all rooms, and frosting all bathroom doors. Also, better maintenance of the rooms is needed. Most rooms had some type of fault I reported to Reception e.g. a rattling air-conditioner, a shower that was blocked, strange noises coming from the bathroom ceiling.

Room Tip: Physically look at your room before deciding - there is huge variation in style (not surprising!) an...

I am well past the age of the average backpacker, but this boutique hotel suited me perfectly. I love music, and Daddy Long Legs provided it both live and in theme. The Hotel sits just above a great music shop and a brilliant Cafe. The hotel is well placed for access to city and water front attractions in Cape Town. Staff are friendly and helpful, wifi and internet provided, most affordable. I will be back.

We stayed in the Sunset Room, and it was nice. If you are a couple, check out the view from the bedroom window and look right ;)
This place was really clean and mostly quiet. There are areas in the hotel that sound tends to travel/echo and can be loud. But in general it is quiet. The deck overlooks the main road and is nice to hangout in the mornings with a cup of tea/coffee. If possible, I would suggest looking at the room before you book. If you are picky. there were a couple rooms that some may find not "normal" or "weird". It just depends on your taste. The staff is incredibly nice and helpful. Had lots of suggestions for places to eat and see. Location is great. Easy walk to several great restaurants and hangouts.
It is not your standard hotel room...if you are looking for something different and fun but still has high standards this is definitely your place.

Room Tip: Sunset room was nice
