It was very warm when we visited Cape Town, so it was especially nice to have a base that offered a cool and tranquil setting. Alta Bay has the feel of Mediterraean villa with a shady garden and zen-friendly terracing with a winding path through the garden. We like places that feel homely and the rooms and public areas are not large, but quite adequate. Our bathroom was tiny but if you cut down on the toiletries and dont mind taking turns, then its fine. Everything was immaculately clean and the breakfast was fresh and appetizing. It is a bit of drive out of Cape Town downtown but it also puts you closer to Camps Bay and Table Mountain. The surrounding houses are beautiful, so you feel you are enveloped in a very nice bubble.
The outstanding aspect was the staff. Madré and her team are consumate professionals. They listened intently and tailored their recommendations accordingly. We have not been made to feel so special in a hotel for many years. Thank for a memorable stay.

This was our second visit to Alta Bay, which in itself tells you that it is a great place to come and stay. The hotel is discreet and peaceful yet offers all the amenities that other bigger hotels offer but in a stylish manner. All of the staff, from managers to cleaners are so welcoming and obliging which we found very endearing.
The main purpose of this trip for us was to relax after busy London lifestyles and recent poor health, well by the time our stay was over we felt incredibly relaxed and fighting fit. Alta Bay is the perfect tonic to recharge your batteries in the most amazing location with stunning views.

My partner and I have had the good fortune to stay at some of the best hotels in the world and we appreciate the attention to detail and 'thinking ahead' that sets a great hotel apart. It was therefore a fabulous discovery to find the same level of attention and care in an intimate setting that made it feel more like being a favoured house guest.
More suited to couples and solo travellers than party goers and families, at Alta Bay you feel that you are part of the real Cape Town rather than a tourist on the more lively and ritzy Camps Bay strip.
Hard to criticise in any way - my own personal gripe was minimal and something that with all the good will in the world, the ever accommodating staff could do little about; the absence of sun bathing potential in the afternoon, when the pool was in shade.
Apart from that, we could not recommend Alta Bay highly enough.

We could not have asked for a better start to our honeymoon. Our 4 nights at alta bay were wonderful and we were made to feel so special by all the staff who were so friendly and helpful. Alta bay works so well, great location to reach all parts of cape town...centre of town is only 10 mins away by cab. Great views from the upstairs balcony. We would definitely stay again!

Took my partner to Cape Town to celebrate her 40th and booked this boutique hotel before we went. I have to say we couldn't have picked a better place to stay, from arrival at Alta Bay we were greeted with smiles and it only got better from there on in. The staff were fantastic and could not have been more helpful, booking taxi's, restaurants and giving out helpful advice on places to see and things to do.
But it was the little touches that set it apart from the rest. The note on the bed wishing my partner a great birthday, a different music cd playing every night we got in and the words of wisdom left on the pillows each night. We cannot recommend Alta Bay highly enough - a little oasis in Cape Town!

Alta Bay is a small, boutique hotel in the hills, in the shadows of Table Mountain. The site is on a hill and all of the rooms are very private. The landscaping gives a good flavor for the local fauna of Cape Town; the decor is modern. The site is very secluded and quiet; perfect for a few days of rest and recovery from the world you have left. The staff are exceptionally professional and helpful. When we checked in, the hotel was not crowded, and the manager upgraded us to the Bay Room, which was extraordinarily decadent with a gigantic bathroom and beautiful views. Each morning the staff prepare a huge and tasty spread for breakfast, with pretty much anything you could ask for. Morris, Robyn, or Madre, the very professional, courteous, and helpful managers, will help you plan your day and make reservations for tours or restaurants. At night, there is an open bar where you can have a glass of a local wine and sit by the fireplace in the quiet lounge. The pool is small, but the pool area is such a beautiful and relaxing spot.

The only drawback: located in a more residential part of Cape Town, you cannot walk anywhere for shopping or eating. We had a car and it was very helpful (they had a garage for parking for us), but the staff are very good about arranging taxis.

This place offers the most personable service with welcoming hosts you will exver experience. Complimentary Internet, complimentary cocktail bar, complimentary bottled water in the room...this hotel knows that it's the little things that make a BIG difference. And the hosts make you feel like family. This is the best example of Cape Town hospitality one can find!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Alta Bay, located in Higgovale, the most up-market suburb of the City Bowl, is set high on the slopes of Table Mountain, with beautiful views over Table Bay and the City, yet only 3 km away from most of Cape Town's attractions including the Waterfront, beaches and within walking distance (1 km) of Kloof Street with its many restaurants and coffee shops. Surrounded by a lush native garden, Alta Bay combines understated luxury and urban chic with a laid-back and retreat atmosphere. Alta Bay, previously a 5-star boutique hotel has 5 years ago (Oct 2011) been converted into a 4-star self-catering Guest House with 3 large luxury units. Each unit has a separate entrance, a fully equipped kitchen (or kitchenette), a private outside terrace and offers all the 5-star facilities. This Tuscan house is built on separate levels with a great sense of space and light throughout and is designed in a contemporary style with bespoke furniture handcrafted locally. The Loft (70 m²) and the Bay Suite (42 m²) offer spectacular views of the sea and city while the Garden Room (28 m²) has the benefit of the shaded lush garden. The Loft has a bedroom on the mezzanine floor, a bathroom with bath & shower and a sleeper couch which can accommodate a 3rd adult or 2 children. On arrival, there will be cereals, coffee, tea, bottled water and milk in your room. For guests who want to have breakfast outside, there is a large variety of restaurants and snack bars within walking distance (1 km). We suggest our guests to have their own transport during their stay in Cape Town. Alta Bay is located high on the slopes of Table Mountain. Having their own transport car will give them the flexibility to explore the region. Kloof Street with its' many restaurants is only 1 km away, which is an easy walk downhill. However, to come back is much harder. If driving left is a problem, taxis (including Uber) are easily available. ... more   less
