I must point out first and foremost that the service from the Front Desk was outstanding. They went above and beyond in helping our every beckon and call. However, the (one) other review reflects what I thought as well. The room was nice and well appointed. Having a computer with free internet in our room was a definite plus, however, our internet didn't work for almost the entire time that we were there. It was the weekend, so the hotel had trouble getting in someone to fix it until Monday. They definitely made up for our trouble by waiving all of our incidental charges which were two large bags of laundry, some room service and all of our mini bar.

Greens was nice and the food was really quite good.

The lobby and halls were a little shabby and the pool was absolutely gross! If we were ever to get back to Cape Town I would split our visit up so that we could spend a few days in Camps Bay. We went there on our last day and it was paradise!

We stayed at the Hippo for 5 nights in February and had a fantastic time. Rooms are very spacious and include a small kitchenette. They also have PC's with hi speed internet access and flat screen TV's with many channels available. Staff are very friendly and helpful with suggestions, getting reservations, directions etc. Location can't be beat - in the Gardens right off Kloof street and within walking distance to many great restaurants. Hotel has secured off street parking and I would definitely recommend a rental car for a few days as there is so much to see outside of Capetown - winelands, False Bay, Cape of Good Hope etc.

I'm not one for writing long reviews, so here goes

Hippo was alright, service was very friendly and my room was HUGE and nicely designed. I didn't get the hang of watching the TV on the in-room desktop PC (and I'm a techie!) but that was my only quibble.

Greens, the cafe downstairs is charming and has great food. Room service menu is from there as well.

My only problem with Hippo is its location. A lovely neighborhood to be sure, but I picked it randomly on my first visit to Cape Town only to discover that I would have preferred Bantry Bay or Camps Bay

Oh and the hotel made Wallpaper's Sept 2005 edition
