“Great Staff, Good Location, Excellent Shushi Restaurant.”
Reviewed 31 March 2012 via mobile

Very much enjoyed my two night stay before going on Safari. The only drawback was the close proximity to the late night partying on Long Street. I was aware of this beforehand, but with ear plugs it was tolerable. I was also lucky to be in the best room in the house, 602.
The view of Table Mountain thru the room's glass corner was simply spectacular.
The included breakfast was fine, consisting of choice of eggs, sides, and a cold buffet. Dinner at the Shushi/Thai/Noodle restaurant was a really pleasent surprise. Had I not Explored the neighboring restaurants the first night, I would not have gone anywhere else. They had a 50% opening discount when I was there. This maybe a continuing discount as a competitive
Marketing technique, but I would eat there every night on my next stay. Cora, the Rest. Mgr was a delight and bent over backwards to please.
The front staff were great and most helpful and went out of their way to please.
If you remember your ear plugs, this is a well located and pleasent hotel

Really good location and lovely reception staff who really do want to help you and ensure that you get see all of the beautiful places in Cape Town.
The only negative is if you have a front room and the noise from the late night bars on Long Street, so if you want quiet request a back room but you will miss the beautiful views that you get of Table Mountain if you stay at the front of the hotel.
Breakfast is average with not a big choice, and no atmosphere in the breakfast room.
Easy to get everywhere by taxi, it takes about 10 minutes in a cab to the Victoria and Alfred docks, it is a little too far to walk.
PS felt safe at all times in Cape Town.

Although relatively good value for money some basic concerns which could easily be addressed include:
- old stained carpets
- towels smelt musty and were not clean and fresh
- the shower had mould and mildew and was never properly clean

On the positive side the breakfast was great, view of the mountain amazing and it is situated on a very vibrant (and noisy) street

Dear Greg,

Thank you for your objective review!

We noticed that you scored us 4/5 for value, 4/5 for Location, 3/5 for rooms and service and 2/5 for cleanliness.

I would like to take this opportunity to touch on your complaints about the hotel namely the carpets, showers and towels

Firstly, the showers and carpets are due to be deep cleaned in the first week of April which is straight after high season. We ran at 80% occupancy in January and February and now again in March and as such the rooms have seen high traffic through them over the last 3 months. We do a quarterly deep clean as we cannot possibly do it on a daily basis but do try and do spot cleans wherever possible.

I must however object to your observation that the showers are mouldy and have mildew. They are cleaned on a daily basis with strong cleaning chemicals by our housekeeping staff and only need to be regrouted. Unfortunately the grout does have an appearance which might have led you to conclude that that this was mould. It is definitely not the case.

Our towels are laundered on a daily basis by a contracted company, unless the guest (in accordance with our laundry policy) has hung them up after use. Our laundry policy states that towels that need to be laundered should be left on the floor. If they are hung up on the hooks or racks then our housekeeping staff will leave them in the room. This is to conserve water and electricity which is our small way of trying to conserve energy and thereby the environment. In your case, you most likely left your towels hanging up after using them and this would account for the mustiness and them not being clean and fresh.

We are very happy to hear that you loved the location, view and breakfast. I sincerely hope that next time you are in Cape Town you will stay with us again.

With kind regards,

As a family with young kids, we were a bit concerned after reading the reviews from other guests on Trip Advisor. However, we really had nothing to worry about. We called and explained our concerns to the hotel manager and she put us on the top floor, where we had no problems with the noise from the street.
The rooms were very comfortable and the staff extremely friendly and helpful. They even sorted out our day trips around Cape Town, including a trip to Table Mountain., around the peninsula and restaurant reservations for dinner.
We were extremely pleased and will quite likely stay here again if we are back in Cape Town. I would readily recommend the hotel to anyone looking for a good place at a decent price.

Walking into the hotel, my first impression was that it was not clean. There were finger and hand prints on all glass surfaces. in the room, the carpets were dirty. We slept on the 6th floor and complained twice about a foul odour in the corridor and in the lift. For a 4 star rated institution, we never felt our vehicle was safe in the parking, there was no security presence and I have never had to walk out onto the street carrying my luggage simply because the hotel lift isn't working, that is not good enough. I would never recommend this hotel to anyone that I know and I personally will never sleep there again. Very poor.

Central hotel and within walking distance of some tourist attractions: Company Gardens, Castle, Green Market Square. Within walking distance to train station which was very convenient for trip to Simons Town.

The hotel was nice. The beds were comfortable. The breakfast was fine but as with all hotel breakfasts, it got boring after a while.

A lot of the negative reviews about this hotel was about the noise. Our room was right opposite the clubs/bars. Yes you can hear it. But I didn't get bothered by it at all. I can imagine some light sleepers would get disturbed, but if you live in London, like I do, then the noise really isn't anything to write home about.

The bathroom was rather odd. It didn't have a door, so if you're travelling with a friend it can get a bit weird knowing they can just walk past and see you showering naked. The wardrode and safe is just outside the bathroom opening, so not very convenient. Also, there is only a sliding screen partitioning the bedroom and the bathroom. But that can be closed, so no significant worries there.

There wasn't a large selection of TV channels - but that isn't a huge issue.

Tips:

1. The wine tour to Stellenbosch the hotel suggested was excellent! Was only 445 rand, 29 wines, 5 farms, included lunch. BARGAIN!

2. Get train to Simon's Town (only 25 rand return) and then there is a tour company just outside running tours from Simons Town to the Cape Point national park. (11am and 2:30pm) They'll take you to Cape point, Cape of Good Hope, you get to see baboons, ostriches. They charge 200 rand and you have to pay the 85 rand entrance fee. Works out much much cheaper than the tours which cost around 750 rand each! hgtravel.co.za (HGTS Travel Services)

3. If you want to go to the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens get a bus!! Or at least get a bus home. We got taxi from the hotel there and it cost 120 rand. There is a Golden Arrow Bus outside exit 2 of the gardens, they charge only around 6 rand to take you back to Cape Town Bus Terminus (just outside the train station). SOO much cheaper!

The location is great - smack on Long Street, where all the action is. Staff was very friendly, and the rooms were good - great little bathroom, all was clean, bed was fine.

The breakfast, included, was terrible though - stay for the hotel, and just go for breakfast somewhere nearby, lots of good places...

Room Tip: top floors... less noise from Long Sreet at night, if you are not a all night party animal

Dear Mr. Judge

Thank you very much for your objective review! We noticed that you scored us 4 out of 5 for value, sleep quality, rooms and cleanliness and 5 out of 5 for service and location.

I must apologise profusely for the breakfast not being up to standard. As our Food and Beverage department was outsourced from the 1st of December, we were still experiencing a few teething problems at the time of your stay which have since been sorted out.

We hope very much that you will visit us again when next in Cape Town.
