A good choice in the center of Cape Town. Large, comfortable room. About a fifteen-minute walk from the convention center on a central street that we felt comfortable doing. The complementary parking in a secure garage was a plus. Most exceptional was the friendliness and helpfulness of Taryn and the reception staff, who went out of their way to recommend things to do both in the city and outside. The breakfasts are special as compared to other hotels and guest houses - don't miss the salmon and scrambled eggs.

I've stayed here twice with my fiancé, and loved it each time. It can get a bit noisy.... but it also provides a lovely view and easy access to the nightlife in Long Street.
We had a great experience with the restaurant, the food and cocktails were great. The rooms are comfortable, very chic & artsy.
I believe it is worth the stay.

Agreeable room decor, artsy photographs in lobby and restaurant area, comfy beds, high power shower. Cramped and run down reception area - some chipped marble tiles on floor, exhausted looking couches and cushions. Terrible breakfast - omelette swimming in oil, runny pancakes, cutlery missing from tables - french toast was good though and only one waitress. Staff members generally didn't care about complaints and were defensive. Super noisy at night - don't stay here if you want a good nights sleep -

Please see the response sent on 05 May 2010 to your Tour Operator in relation to the complaint sent to her in April by your group. The Tour Operator was happy with our response.

Hi Ince,

Firstly with regard to the clients comments about the amount that they paid per room, I think you can agree that our rates are very competitive for the quality and service that we offer in the 4 Star market.

On the noise issue, we have close to 8000 people a year coming through our doors and if you look at our comments on Trip Advisor for example we have a 4 out of 5 score rating and this pertains to the overall standard of the hotel, including décor, cleanliness, location, service and the overall enjoyment of the stay per individual guest.

With regards to Ms. Masinde’s comment “The hotels lobby, gallery cafe and dining area were also quite rundown and the staff were generally apathetic when it came to offering service - especially during breakfast “

Urban Chic Hotel has been selected as 1 of 5 FINALISTS in the 2010 AA Travel Guides and American Express Accommodation Awards in the category: Boutique Hotels. We pride ourselves on our modern and very chic décor and especially on the quality of our service. The AA Travel Guides and American Express Accommodation Awards are based on guest critiques that stay at our hotel, and as they are numbered, we can’t not send bad critiques and only send good ones as we would be disqualified. The critiques grade the hotels on a scale of 1 – 5 for Décor, cleanliness, guest services, customer service, amenities and many other criteria.

The fact that Ms Masinde thinks that we lock the revolving door due to being afraid of thugs, shows her naivety with regards to the crime levels in South Africa and we are just displaying an acute awareness of reality, and with regards to security, we have a doorman at the front door, and 16 CCTV cameras that are being monitored on a 24 hours basis by our security firm. We also have security card access to all room doors which record who had entered the room, what time they had entered the room, and whether the person entering was a staff member, management or a guest. We also have radio transmitted armed response through ADT 24 hours per day, that can literally be on site within minutes. Over and above all this we have the CCID (Cape Town Central Improvement District) which have guards patrolling the city centre (including Long Street) 24 hours a day and are easily identified by their bright neon bibs. So as you can see the security and safety of our guests is of utmost importance to us, and we have never had any incidences in the past where as guest has felt unsafe or unsettled while staying with us.

Most of all we are disgusted at the defamatory statement that our hotel lobby, The Gallery café and dining area are run down, as we are an owner run, designed and maintained property that pride ourselves on our excellent attention to detail. You and your staff are welcome at any time to come and view our property to ascertain this for yourselves.

As far as the carpet issue is concerned, unfortunately the guest that had checked out the previous day had spilled Red Wine on the carpet, and so we did not have an opportunity to replace the carpet. Also as the Jazz Festival was coming up that weekend and we were already fully booked, we explained that we would have to wait until after the Jazz Festival to get someone out to take measurements, quote us and replace the carpet. We did however offer Ms Masinde a different room on a higher floor which had an impeccable carpet, and better views of Table Mountain. I am sure she would have been very happy with the new room, but she declined it and did not want to move. We even sent up a fruit platter and a bottle of wine to apologise for any discomfort or inconvenience that we had caused, which in all due respect was something that was out of our control.

I think Ms. Masinde was ultimately upset by the fact that we could not replace the carpet in her room straight away, and unfortunately sometimes when you start your holiday on a negative, it is difficult to see the positive. She had asked us for a refund for her room, which we explained to her would be impossible, and we ultimately feel that this is the reason for her complaints to you.

If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Warm regards,

Siranne Ungerer

Operations Manager

Prepaid reservations at this hotel. Upon arrival the clerk could not locate our reservations. We were in the very small lobby approx. 2 hours before getting to a room. After finally going to the room we walk in and there is one double bed for two ladies. Twin rooms were requested for an all ladies group. This took about another hour to resolve. Even with that two ladies were forced to sleep together. The rooms do not have closets or dresser drawers to put your things away. Long street due to the clubs restaurants is quite loud way into the night/morning. The hotel was suppose to be non smoking but smoking allowed in the lobby bar which trickles upward and into your room. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Oh must not forget. The bathroom is open air without doors. Ok for couples but not otherwise. We made it through our 5 night stay, The property is rated as a luxury hotel. Not so, at least not by U.S. standards. Located on Long Street across the street from Mama Africa Restaurant.
The hotel has a very compact layout. Everything goes up verses being spread out.

Thank you for your review!

We value your feedback as this gives us the opportunity to challenge any weaknesses we might have and enables us to strive for better standard and service to visitors. I noticed that we scored 3/5 for our rooms, we scored 2/5 for our location, we scored 5/5 for cleanliness, 3/5 for our hotel service and 1/5 for sleep quality.

The score shows us that you enjoyed three aspects of the hotel, our rooms, cleanliness of our rooms and public areas, hotel staff and friendliness. We scored less on Location and Sleep Quality where we feel that it might have something to do with the fact that Long street was busier than normal which was in April during the Jazz Festival (International Event), Long street is known as the after-party district for such big events.

Your bookings had been pre-booked and paid with a travel agent, thier might have been a problem during registration as a number of rooms had been reserved for the group, the original rooming list forwarded to us from the travel agent had been changed as group members arrived requesting to share with friends etc thus causing confusion to later arrivals.Of our 20 rooms we have a total of 5 twin rooms, most of which were allocated for the group as per your rooming list, again going back to the change in the room allocation as the group arrived, there might have been a swop of room categories from twin to double and then back to twin which took our night manager a few minutes to change over. The rooms have large closets, we have a closet with our mini-bar beverages and snacks, coffee & tea making facilities, above these facilities are shelves for clothing items. Along side this cupboard is a closet for hanging items and draws for packed items. The electronic safe is also found in this closet too. Our closets have been built by keeping in mind the length of stay and occupancy per room for our travellers who stay on average five days to one week. The noise experience was due to the Jazz Festival in April 2010, an annual event which attracts visitors from all over. The hotel rooms are non-smoking & the cigar lounge on the ground floor is the only available area for visitors to smoke, the patio doors of the bar is not kept open so we can't understand how smoke managed to trickle up three floors to your bedroom balcony. Some bathrooms are inter-leading with the bedroom. The bathroom does have a sliding bamboo and wood screen which blocks out the bedroom for privacy, fine for couples or single travellers sharing, we have had no complaints about this before but we will monitor feedback from other visitors and based on the feedback we would consider making necessary changes in the future.

We sincerely hope that we might have the opportunity to welcome you back to our hotel

Kind regards

My husband and I recently stayed at this hotel after reading the reviews on trip advisor. The reviews were spot on and I am glad we stayed here as the views of Table Mountain from our room were awesome. The receptionist, Melissa was very competent and not only reorganised all whole itinerary but printed out maps for our onward journey to the Garden Route. The breakfasts every morning were scrumptious and meant we didn't need much lunch. We were recommended to some excellent restaurants in Cape Town and the surrounding area. All in all, I would would highly recommend it to all my friends and would stay here again.

Thank you for your valuable feedback!

We noticed that we scored 5/5 for our Rooms, Location, Cleanliness, Service and 4/5 for our Value and Sleep Quality.

We pleased to hear that you liked the view from your room; all our rooms have a floor to ceilling views of Table Mountain and the city centre. Our Receptionists are always available to assist guests with information about the local attractions in Cape Town and we are happy to hear that your onward journey arranged to the Garden Route was successful. Our breakfasts are included in the room rate and as you stated is good value for money and a great way to start the day. We appreciate your recommendation to friends and family and we hope that they would get to experience our hotel and services when they plan to visit our beautiful city.

We wish to thank you for your positive feedback and hope that you will consider staying with us again next time you plan to visit South Africa.

Pros: Great little hotel with a helpful, knowledgeable staff. The location right on Long Street means restaurants, bars, and clubs are right outside your front door any night of the week.

Cons: Internet was a little pricey.

Thank you for your valuable feedback!

We are delighted that you have scored us 4/5 for Value, Rooms, Cleanliness, Service and Sleep Quality and 5/5 for Location. As stated in your review we are conveniently located and are situated among restaurants, bars, and clubs in Cape Town, all within walking distance. We often are commended by our location

With regards to the Internet, we offer our guests the first 20 mega bytes at no cost thereafter we charge 60cents per mega byte i.e. R 30.00 for every 50 mega bytes. We have made comparisons with nearby internet cafes and they are relative to industry prices, our internet service provider (which is outsourced) service a number of restaurants and businesses in Cape Town so thier prices should remain fixed to accommodate all thier clients.

Thanks again for your wonderful review and we hope to accommodate you again in the near future.

Kind regards,

i've stayed at Urban Chic several times, its a regular location for me when on business in Cape Town.
Generally - friendly, if a little fumbling, staff, clean rooms, excellent cold & hot breakfast included in the price- which, based on the usual R950 room price, is very good value. Usual breakfast in a CPT hotel is going to set you back around R85.
Location cannot be beaten - 2 minutes to anywhere interesting on Long Street. Yes, it can be a little noisy - especially on Friday / Saturday nights- but this is a city hotel, right in the middle of the entertainment area, and that's why you're staying there.
No room service, which is agravating, but approx 15 places to eat on Long Street, so get out the room.
Nice modern rooms / bathrooms, floor to ceiling glass with mountain views.

For about 65GBP - what more do you want? I've stayed in more than a few hotels in Cape Town, this is the only one that doesn't double its rates in tourist season!

recommended.

Thank you for your enquiry!

We appreciate your valued feedback which allows us to constantly improve our services and facilities to promote our guest satisfaction.

We noticed you scored us 5/5 for Value and Location. 4/5 for Rooms, Cleanliness and Sleep Quality and 3/5 for service.

We take pride in our location as we are in the middle of the city centre, surrounding restaurants, bars, clubs and as you stated 2 minutes from interesting spots in Long Street and the Central Business District. Yes, on Friday and Saturday nights Long Street becomes populated by locals and visitors alike wanting to experience the vibe of the city which can lead to higher volumes of noise, approx 5% of our guests complain about the noise whereas others expect the noise levels because of the location of the hotel. We offer Room service in the evenings, perhaps it might have been a Sunday night when our restaurant was closed in the evening that Room Service might not have been available. Our Front Office staff have many recommendations for nearby restaurants in the area. Thank you for acknowledging our competitive rates, this we have been commended on by tour operators and travel agents in the industry who have all said that our rates offered consumers value for money and not forgetting our free value-adds for complimentary parking, full english breakfast and 20 mega bytes free internet during the stay.

We appreciate your review and hope that you will consider staying with us again when you plan your next business trip.

Kind regards
