“Beautiful City Appartment on the Sea”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2011

Just a brief few lines for this one.
We stayed in the appartment for 11 days and it became our home from home.
We were only two for part of the time and had oceans of space but even with more folks it is still a superbly proportioned home. Others have talked about the views and situation, perfect! But what about location, location? Twenty minutes into the city centre what more can you want and great beaches as well.
Traffic. The appartment is right on the coast road so there is traffic noise, Friday afternoon it can become tedious. Other times we were unaware of it.
Not a cooks kitchen but for the majority of folks eating out in Camps Bay is the norm anyway.
We hope to go back

We had the penthouse to share between 4 of us and it was excellent as it has 2 double rooms and 1 Proper twin room.
Included is a lounge area and equiped kitchen and then upstairs a fantastic pool area as well as inside area with the most breath taking views.
3 Bathrooms and a separate toilet mean there is no waiting for others (especially the ladies), when getting ready to go out.
The town is a 5 to 10 min walk.
An hours walk is the 12 Apostles hotel which had a great lunch.

This place certainly has a beautiful view and is a comfortable stay but the service was terrible. Bev, the lady who runs the place, is very short in her answers and impolite.

In point form here is some things to note if you consider staying there.

Stairs no elevator: On arrival at Bali Bay, you will need to carry your own bags up all the stairs (plenty of stairs!!!!) as there is no elevator or help from the apartments.

Poor security: The garage door does not lock properly, a window in the apartment does not lock at all, no night time security or reception and the security alarm in the apartment does not work.

No air conditioning in the living room / television room / kitchen

No dishwasher liquid supplied to wash dishes

Very noisy apartment as it lies directly on the main road and you can hear and see all the traffic. Especially bad on weekends.

Lovely swimming pool but not heated.

It is not very often that somewhere is even better in the flesh than it appears in its glossy website photos but the Penthouse at Bali Bay certainly does.

Four of us had booked it for a 5 night stay and it really is exceptional. Immaculately clean and presented, stunning views over the bay, great location - genuinely only a 5 minute walk from all the main shops, bars and restaurants - and more space than you will know what to do with! Generous storage (essential with 4 ladies and too many clothes!) and even an upstairs fridge so you can keep your wine nice and cool when having sundowners on the upper deck.

We woke up in luxuriously comfortable beds, showered in generously sized bathrooms (3 in total plus a further separate loo just in case), had breakfast on the vast balcony and sunbathed, barbequed and partied on the upper terrace. The whole space is flooded with light. We did not want to leave!

My sister & I stayed at The Apartment in Bali Bay for 3 nights. We loved it! The Apartment is spacious and had everything we needed. The views are simply gorgeous, and it was really great to be within easy walking distance of the Camps Bay restaurants and shops.
The garaging is a little tight, but that's our only (very small) gripe. Beverley (the manager) was ever helpful, including at 8pm at night when we couldn't get the fridge to work, which we eventualy solved later (very important to keep the Cape wine cold!). We certainly didn't have an issue with security. And as for the noise, sure, it's on a busy road, but the road is the only thing between you and the sea - what a pleasure! And the road was quiet at night, and it was lovely to hear the sea all the time.
There was some construction going on next door (actually it was fascinating to watch the cranes) but it certainly didn't interfere with our stay.
I can highly recommend the Apartment in Bali Bay to anyone looking for a relaxing break in Cape Town. Although it is self-catering, the nearby restaurants make it easy to eat out without driving, so you can have the best of both worlds.

My partner and I spent 6 nights at the penthouse apartment at Bali Bay. Before arriving, my partner had had significant correspondence with Beverley, the manager of the apartments, to clarify concerns about security and noise. He also expressly asked about construction in the area as we were looking for a relaxing, quiet location for our holiday. He was reassured that there was no construction nearby, and that road noise was minimal.

When we arrived, we were therefore very disappointed to find out that apartments were being constructed on the second site to the left of BB Apts, complete with crane, and further apartments were being constructed about 150 m away to the right. Beverley tried to explain this away with the comment that the crane next door hadnt been there when he made the enquiry, but we felt she had definitely misled us as to the construction situation, as both construction sites would have been well underway at the time of our enquiry. We also found the road noise at night/early morning somewhat loud as Victoria Road is a main thoroughfare. So, if you are sensitive to noise, we would suggest you reconsider this accommodation. At the very least, we would recommend the penthouse over the other two options due to the height from the street.

With respect to our security concerns, the apartment is accessed by a security gate to the street and is also alarmed. If you are particularly sensitive to security issues, you may wish to reconsider this location - although the police station less than 5 mins away would be a deterrant to any would be intruder! During the time we were there, we had no issues from a security perspective although my partner locked the interior bedroom door each night to be safe!

As to the rest of the apartment's features, the location is very convenient - only a 10 min walk (on pretty much a flat road) to the Camps Bay shopping/restaurant precinct. The flat walk is a huge plus given Camps Bay is pretty much built on a steep hill! It is also an easy drive over Kloof Nek to the city area/Table Mountain so is very convenient if you wish to visit the better restaurants in town (we highly recommend Jardine)!

The apartment was spacious. The bedrooms were well appointed although the furniture in the living/dining area is a bit tired and out of keeping with the bedrooms. The upstairs lounge area leading out onto the plunge pool is a waste of space in our view - the furnishings here were useless and if they invested some money into comfortable couches this would be much more pleasant. The plunge pool/upstairs deck area is very spacious - unfortunately the construction workers nearby look straight down on you!

There was more than enough by way of cutlery, plates etc and the servicing of the apartment every day (other than Sunday) was excellent.

The view is beautiful and it is very relaxing to sit on the balcony and watch the sea. While some websites advertised the apartments as being opposite a beach, the beach is tiny and the bay it overlooks is full of kelp beds, so not appropriate for swimming - although it makes for an interesting outlook! Sunsets are great! The main Camps Bay beach is so close that if you wanted to swim in the sea, it would not be inconvenient.

Given all of the above, I am not sure we would stay again, mainly as the noise factor annoyed us - but other than that we probably would, esp if we got the same kind of deal of 2000 rand a night vs the 5500 that was advertised for the peak season on the website! It definitely isnt worth over 2000.

We had the Penthouse for a week and it was really great. The two doubles have beautiful sea views but the small twin room is dark, but with so many other sea view options from the apt, it doesn't really matter! The Penthouse isn't cheap, and there were only 3 of sharing it, but it is spacious, with amazing views and a top terrace with pool, BBQ and seating area (there's a fridge and shower up on that level too!). It is fully kitted out with everything you would need, and they even leave previous tenants basics like washing powder, olive oil etc which saves you buying your own.
There were a few 'maintenance' issues but nothing major and Beverly was very receptive to us informing her of these. But there was also only one key between us, which posed difficulties when we were out at different times.
Overall, a great stay and close by the main drag and beach. The apts are on the main road, but it is quiet at night and noise wasn't an issue. I would definitely return!
