First I'm sorry for what happened to the reviewer before this (mbix42), but you really can't hold the management of Dunkley House responsible for such an unfortunate event so as to give them such a bad review.
We had a car parked outside and we noticed a guard/security at night at the end of the road, I don't know who he was employed by, but one could ask where he was the night of the car break in.
Anyway our experience was totally different. We arrived early one morning from the airport, hours before we were due to check in. Not only were were we given an alternative room which happened to be available to the one originally allocated, but a full and delicious breakfast was offered which we willingly took.
Dunkley House is not a central location (what's central in Cape Town?), but it's a pleasant 15/20 minute stroll downtown. Most usefully (for us) was the fact that DH is only 10 minutes away from the hop on/hop off Red Bus service.
Our room was extremely comfortable and well wquiped, we slept like babies.
All the reception staff were extremely helpful, there was nothing they couldn't help us over.
Only minor criticism is that our bathroom was rather 'tired', but this is to be expected from time to time and I'd like to think renovation is planned in the foreseeable future.

We stayed at the Dunkley house for three days last December. Yes, it's a nice hotel: clean, well situated, great amenities, friendly staff, etc. But I would strongly advise anyone with a vehicle to look elsewhere. The hotel does not have off-street parking and the owners are too cheap to hire a night guard to watch the streets. Our car had the window smashed and items stolen the first night we stayed there. The police officer who came to investigate said this was the third (3rd) time that he himself had been to this street investigating car break-ins. Yes, stuff like this happens and Cape Town has a very high crime rate so not too surprising, but because of that the owners should be more proactive. Most businesses pay for a night watchman to guard the street out front or pool with neighboring businesses to hire a security company. Apparently the Dunkley house is too cheap to bother. If you don't have a car, it's a great place - if you have a car - look somewhere else.

This lovely old house in a quiet and pretty street is near to Company Gardens and is a short walk from the main shopping areas of the city. There is on-street parking outside the house and it is a short drive to The Waterfront or Table Mountain and Signal Hill. The house is tastefully furnished and very quiet and private. Beds are huge and comfortable and there is plenty of wardrobe space, lots of mirrors, a powerful hair dyer and tea and coffee making facilities. There are also honesty bars, (refrigerators stacked with wine and beers) and bowls of fresh fruit available. Breakfast is cooked to order and the staff very friendly and efficient.
Our room had its own entrance, fridge etc as well as its own plunge pool. The bathroom was wonderful, very state-of-the-art with matt black suite and great shower. This room (I think it was no 4) would suit any one who wanted a romantic stay. Quite pricey though at R1350 for two for one night.

This is my hotel of choice when staying in Cape Town (stayed at three others places). Design buff will love this place. It has everything I would want: friendly staff, ultra modern and comfortable rooms, great breakfast, good security. The common area is a great place to chill out by the pool. They even provide a self-serve wine selection at a good price. Good value!

Myself and my Mum stayed in Dunkley house over Christmas and New Year 2011/2012. We stayed in the apartment and had our own bedrooms. The apartment is up the steps from the main entrance, big, bright and comfortable. The kitchen is a good size and we cooked a few meals and it was great to have the fridge to keep our wine cold ! The apartment was cleaned every day and fresh towels were supplied daily. We slept very well and as the apartment is on the top of the house, it was very quiet.

We had to move out of the apartment for three nights, I stayed in the Aquq Room and Mum stayed in the Red Room both of which was lovely but the aqua Room is much brighter and bigger with it's own terrace and and very quiet as the Red Room is less bright and being so central to the main hub of the house can be a little noisy.

Dunkley House is in the Gardens area of Cape Town which means that you can walk downtown in about 15/20 minutes and we felt totally safe there; it is just a question of taking care and getting around by taxi after dusk. The Gardens SC is just 10 mins away and it has a huge Pick and Pay where you can do your grocery/food/wine shopping if you are staying in the apartment. We had Christmas Lunch in the Mount Nelson which was fab and we walked there and back; they do a great Afternoon Tea at the Mount Nelson. The V&A Waterfont is about 10/15 mins away ( we ate in San Marco and the food, wine, prices and service were excellent) in a taxi and a great day out and the new Cape Quarter area with some some good restaurants is also only 15 mins away by taxi.

We ate twice in Maria's restaurant in Dunkley Square, 5 mins walk from Dunkley House and the food and wine were delicious. On our shopping day downtown we had lunch outside at Mint restaurant at the Taj hotel and that was such a lovely meal with decadent service. We also ate in Diva which is a 15 min walk from Dunkley House which is an Italian with very cheap food and drink and it is beside Perserverance, the oldest oub in Cape Town and it also has good food.

The breakfasts at Dunkley House are to die for, lovingly prepared by Eunice. Grace, Joy, Gibson, Beauty and Tutu are so welcoming and lovely that you feel like you are staying with friends. The honesty bar is a great idea and very reasonable, especially if you want cool drinks/chilled wine and are not staying in the apartment and as such have no fridge.

You can guess from this review that Mum and me had the best time at Dunkley House and you will too !

Room Tip: If you are a couple, I would say that the best room is Bay 4 but the aqua Room is also lovely and le...

I stayed here with a couple of girlfriends for nearly a week. The rooms are nice and clean, the decor is very stylish. Breakfast is excellent and the service was really nice. It's in a quiet residential area (Gardens), and I felt completely safe the whole time. It's close to Kloof street that has great shopping and restaurants.
