Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! by Marriott Cape Town
Ranked #83 of 112 Hotels in Cape Town Central
Reviewed 25 June 2011

Stayed at the Fire and Ice for three nights in their 2 bed semi self catering hotel suite which is separate from the hotel it self. The suite was beautiful and had a office with a desk as you entered which led into a large double volume open plan lounge/diningroom with basic kitchen amenities. Downstairs was our main bedroom with a shower and basin inside the bedroom with a separate toilet off the lounge. The beds were very comfortable but would recommend that they change their pillows. In the kitchen is a microwave, fridge, Saeco coffee machine which I loved. They fill the machine with Lavazza coffee beans and I could not get enough, I have never drank so many cups in my life. Upstairs was a second bedroom also with a shower in the room. The decor is lovely in the suite and very modern. We ate a few times at the restaurant and enjoyed all our meals. The bar gets very busy at night and we also tasted their milkshakes that they are renowned for. We had Lindt, Peppermint Crisp, Turkish Delight, Oreo and the list goes on. Internet was free which was nice and parking was under the building in the basement which was secure and free. They have a smoking room called the "coughing room" which has coffins in the room which you sit on when you smoke in the room. On the ceiling is a picture stuck on the roof of people at a funeral so it looks as if people are attending your funeral and looking down on you when you look up. The toilets had different themes in the hotel which my kids loved. There is one that has a picture of a man with just a towel around his waste and when you move the towel a buzzer sound goes off. There is one that has over 30 toilet rolls mounted to the all. There is a longdrop toilet and a few more. Tongue in cheek, it is funky. The lifts resemble a shark cage and another a cable car. A pleasant stay, good friendly staff.

I stayed at the F & I from 1/2 to 8/2/11 as a solo, female traveller. Like many of you I researched the hotel on Tripadviser & was so pleased to find I agreed with all the great comments. Firstly, let me say DO bring your sense of humour to this hotel. If you don't. you will miss half the clever details!! It starts at checkin, when you notice the General Manager has a glass walled office beside Reception with a HUGE sign painted on the outside saying "DISTURB ME". Brave, but reassuring for the guest. Do also please bring your smile, as some guests treat the staff with rudeness. Approach them with a BIG smile on your face & you are rewarded with the most stunning smiles in return. My room did not have a balcony nor much of a view, but I was staying on the lowest rate. I believe other rates offer bigger rooms/balconies. Though small & yes the shower was off it in a glass cubicle, but it had everything I needed, including a seperate toilet in its own little room. The bed was one of the most comfortable I have slept in with great linen. The Lobby has the most comfortable couches, the pool area has its own floor & is set inside, with sliding doors & the most comfortable lounges EVER overlooking the small lap pool a stunning view of Table Mountain. To lie here watching the clouds roll over the mountain while drinking one of their famous Milkshakes - divine. Yes, you do have to check out all the toilets off the Lobby, the clever lifts, the very clever smoking room off the Lobby & much more in clever touches!!! Room Service was prompt, well presented & good value. Breakfast was included in my rate & was truly excellent. There was an amazing choice from Juices, Fruits, Cereals, excellent Yoghurts, hot dishes, eggs cooked to order, cold meats & a great range of Muffins, Danishes etc. It was open till late morning & replenished frequently. I found the location excellent & right near the Hop On Hop Off bus. I ate dinner there several times & the food was good & very reasonably priced. Overall the Staff were a delight, the hotel spotlessly clean & I can't wait to return !!!

We were lucky enough to have one of their 2 bedroom apartments which was perfect with 2 kids. It really enhances your time with each other when you ahve adequate space and we certainly got that. The kids loved the decor especially the lifts all with different themes. Food was very good and it was ideal being greeeted by Table Mountain everday!! The location is good for getting around the city, we even walked to the Waterfront one day. Should we go back we will definetly returning to the Fiire and Ice. The reception staff were always very friendly and helpfull too!!

Nice place - good size room - modern decor - especially having the shower in the room divided by a curtain!

Booked an upgrade so not sure if these are normal for other rooms.

Great view of table mountain from the window

Bit far from central town - right at the end of long street. Took a 30 minute walk to find somewhere to buy a ticket for the sightseeing bus (but bus is well reccommended).

Area is a bit dodgy - lots of beggars as you walk up hill to hotel, but once inside is safe.

Staff very friendly and helpful.

Quirky decor inside also leads to the 'Coughing Room' - i.e. smoking area - which is furnished with coffins as seats. A bit too quirky for my liking...

Room Tip: Get a view of the mountain!

A buddy and I stayed here during the World Cup. Excellent value. Only 3-4 blocks to Long Street, yet the hotel was far enough out of the way to be quiet at night. The interior has an interesting design. Really nice breakfast, the bar was happening while I was there. Our room had a great view of Table Mountain, I completely recommend this hotel.

This is a "snaks" hotel (snaks is afrikaans for funny). So is the elevator actually a shark cage and the toilets on the ground floor are an advemture on itself. Try the "theater fear" or the "temptation" toilets... This, next to friendly staff, open swimming pool on 1st floor, free wifi, big and complete breakfast buffet, etc etc.
