“Good stay at Protea!”
Reviewed 10 November 2009

Reasonably priced (I paid £65/night) hotel that is within easy walking distance of Long Street’s bars, as well as museums and government buildings and the fort. The hotel has attempted a funky vibe and I think they have achieve this in the bar/restaurant (try their milkshakes). However, maybe they went a little bit too far (where funky meets tacky) in the themed elevators, and “fire carpeted” hallways.

The lobby always felt very chaotic to me, but the service was friendly and professional. They also allowed me an early check-in, which after an overnight flight from London was fabulous. The rooms are a little small, but functional with that “funky” feel and a couple nice additions (Bose i-pod docking system, free wifi). However, glass divider between shower and bedroom might put people who like their privacy off. Overall, good value for money (I wouldn’t pay much more than £65 though) and good location.

I booked at the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice for 4 days in September on the basis of all the good reviews i read on Tripadvisor . Unfortunately, i had to check out after one day and move to another hotel. The rooms at Fire & Ice are very small and extremely average.
Firstly, the rate this hotel charges, being a 3-star hotel is ludicrous. For 300 Rand (USD40) more you can stay at the Westin, which is a 5-star hotel.

Secondly, this hotel is situated in the city, which is not the greatest place to be staying in, especially at night. The hotels situated around the convention centre (about 3 of them) are far more convenient for getting around in Cape Town, and a lot safer.

Great decor in the common areas and the rooms are very well appointed but small. Situated at the top of the CBD, it is a good spot for the Kloof Rd nightlife which is cosmo style cafes , restaurants and bars. Staff cou7ld be more attentive but overall good experience.

Stayed here for 4 nights and was very impressed. Particular praise to the young people on reception, nothing is too much trouble for them. They aim to please even down to checking in on line for us the day before departure. The guys on the door are also very pleasant and helpful.
Rooms, though small are very well equipped and spotlessly clean and the location is great. The secure car parking was also a bonus.
A great city hotel at which it was a pleasure to stay.

I found this hotel on Tripadvisor and would def recommend it , clean , great staff , good location with some very cool touches. You `ll need a car but we had no trouble parking right outside. Staff left us treats in the room on my b,day and when we checked out they spotted we`d booked for a extra day and refunded us the money with no hassle

We have just spent a week at the hotel and had a fantastic time. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. It is centrally located, with Long street just on the door and a 10 minute cab ride (or 30 minute walk) to the Waterfront. We also booked tours via Oliver to the Winelands and Cape Peninsula which were very good. Breakfast was very good. We only ate in the hotel the one night and the food was very good (there are so many restaurants to try in the area). The room we had was a bit small, but suited us fine as we did not want to spend all our time there. It was spotless every day though. Whilst the décor of the hotel is very trendy, it did not feel too trendy and would appeal to all guests. The lifts and restrooms in the bar area are something to see!

I had heard that Fire and Ice! was a good place to stay and it lived up to those statements. The rooms were clean and the hotel is in a good location about 5 minutes walk from Long Street. The area is also fairly safe at night and is near a supermarket, a laundry and an internet cafe. The food at the restaurant is fairly good but there are so many good restaurants in Cape Town that it has a high standard to meet. The hotel bar is full of media-types and the decor is really interesting so it is well-worth looking round the hotel. The hotel is being expanded so there is building work going on but the noise did not reach my room. However, the traffic noise did reach my room so I had to use ear plugs at night.
