“Ideal location; great service; excellent restaurant!”
Reviewed 13 January 2012

Over the past six years we have enjoyed four trips to Cape Town and stayed at the Southern Sun each time! Our first trip made us want to come back, and subsequent visits haven't changed that view!

Ideally located within a short walk of each of the waterfront and downtown, and with super easy access to the freeways out of town makes it a tough call to generate better value for money.

Food in the hotel restaurant is consistently good and stands up very well against the best of the competition at the waterfront, while the restaurant staff are super-friendly, attentive & efficient.

Rooms are well equipped and more than sufficient for all needs. Best are on the upper-floors facing the waterfront in our opinion.

No hesitations at all in recommending this hotel.

Room Tip: Upper-floor; waterfront facing are best for views...

As a member of Southern Sun Frequent guest I chose this hotel for a short stay over the New Year festive period 2011-2012. Having being to Cape Town on numerous visits before I was aware of the location of the hotel ideally and centrally situated within easy reach of most popular attractions, shopping , restaurants, night life and scenery.
This hotel provided good value for money considering the very peak New year`s weekend and breakfast was included which is something that most Southern Sun hotels offer.
The room was comfortable, with all the necessary facilities needed for a good nights sleep and the bathroom although a bit small did offer a separate shower and tub which is something I always look for in a hotel.
Despite the very high occupancy and bustling atmosphere in the restaurants, lobby and at reception, the staff were always obliging particularly in the very busy breakfast room each morning.
I have also stayed at the adjacent sister hotel , The Cullinan , ( OCT 2010)and both these hotels are of equal standard although differ in decor.
I certainly would recommend this hotel and would return in the future. I do travel on conferences frequently and its location very close to the Cape Town Convention Centre makes it an ideal business hotel too.

Room Tip: ask for mountain or waterfront facing rooms.. avoid room facing the Culllinan as the view can be qui...

I stayed at the Southern Sun originally back in 2008 with a friend. It was our first stay in Cape Town and the hotel definitely set a great standard. Ideally located near the Waterfront (with small charge shuttle service to the mall), the hotel is highly recommended for those looking for a stay in the city and near tourist sites. The room we had was of decent size with a great view and sufficient amenities of a 4 star I would say. Staff was very friendly and accommodating and would rightly recommend things to do / places to visit instead of trying to scam us. Overall a great recommendation though I must say on a future visit I stayed at the Westin (almost next door to the Southern Sun) and this was a far better better property but probably because it was pricier as well.

I stayed in this hotel as part of a technical conference, back in February. A number of colleagues and me stayed in both the Southern Sun Waterfront and Cullinan hotels. Both are good quality hotels but the Cullinan is better quality and more recently updated than the Waterfront. They are both within spitting distance of each other and both within 5 minutes’ walk from the Marina front.
The public areas are of the Waterfront hotel are generally very good. The service from the staff is of a good quality. Generally, you would expect this across the Southern Sun group. The outdoor pool is of only an "average" quality, though. But the pool seating area is comfortable and very pleasant with good service for drinks and food.
the rooms looked a little tired, if I was honest, and comparing them to other hotels i have stayed in, in South Africa (and other 4* hotels around the world) so I was a little disappointed with that. Although, they were not uncomfortable, just a little tired in their decor and a tad small to manoeuvre around with a large amount of luggage.
The food quality was very good with a wide array of breakfast foods as well as evening foods, although most evenings I ate out around the Marina as the choice of top quality restaurants was too much to resist.
Overall, it was a pleasant stay. I’ve stayed in better hotels and believe me; I’ve stayed in a lot worse. So it's a good overall business hotel and, if you're wanting a good centrally located hotel on more of a budget, you can do a lot worse than staying in this hotel.

This hotel is a short walk away from the Waterfront. However, it is not located on the Waterfront like some of the other hotels. So consider this if you don't want to walk back and forth to the Waterfront. The hotel overall was worth the money when compared to others in Cape Town, and although the hotel wasn't the best i have stayed in, I would consider it again because of the value for money.

We were a group of six people, 2 couples and 2 single ladies, booked for 3 rooms at the Southern Sun. We had only booked at this hotel because one of the couples had enough points for a free stay, and since we were only there for 2 nights, we figured why not. I'll tell you why not:

While the location was great, the room was quite pricey for what we got. Tiny room, with just enough space for 2 single beds and our assorted luggage. The view was not what we expected, although the website boasted the proximity to the waterfront hence, the expectation of a nice view to the sea, but no such thing. Our room face a concrete jungle, and no access to fresh air. The most disappointing element was no complimentary breakfast, especially when the room did not come cheap. The bathroom was not clean and the amenities were below average. One of the couples immediately checked out and decided to stay at another boutique hotel on the V&A Waterfront, which they said was delightful, for the same price, and a better location.

The location is good because its 5 minutes from the V&A Waterfront but the hotel charges for the shuttle, and apparently for a larger group, its actually cheaper to take a taxi. However, we were grateful for the shuttle on our way back from the Waterfront as we 2 single ladies encountered some unsavory persons in the parking lot. We didn't order room service, so cannot comment on the food or service but the desk was reasonably efficient in checking us in and out.

Overall, a clean room of miniscule proportions, adequate amenities, good location and decent service.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view, and ensure breakfast is complimentary!

Excellent breakfast, very nice rooms, good location, expensive internet, I would recommend you to use the taxi instead of the hotel shuttle to waterfront as the taxi is cheaper if you are 2 or more. The hotel pool could be heated, the staff on the reception should have more information about the touristic packages etc. however overall impression very good - great price-quality ratio.
