Great hotel. The staff were very very friendly and helpful. Hotel was very clean and in a great location. The free shuttle to and from the waterfront was a unexpected bonus....this was a safe and cost free way of getting to and from the amazing waterfront restaurants. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant on our last night and it was the best food we had in cape town and fairly priced. We would defiantly stay here again.

We stayed here for 4 nights after arrival in South Africa. The hotel was typical of a large hotel in any country (eg Hilton). The room was adequate, but we could smell cigar smoke. As a reformed smoker, I wasn't unduly upset, but my partner was. We were told that the smell came from the air-conditioning from the floor above. The food was excellent as was the service. I did however object to paying for parking in the hotel underground car park. Although the hotel is call the Southern Sun Waterfront, I found it quite a hike to get there. However, there is a free courtesy bus.

Room Tip: The seventh floor is apparently a smoking floor and the smell is transmitted to the sixth floor

Stayed with my family. Well located near the Waterfront entrance. Check-in was seamless and we received an upgrade. Doorman ready with drinks and sweets for the kids. Many staff on hand to assist with any and everything. They refuse to allow you to carry your own bags. Really impressed with the service. Rooms are good and quiet, beds comfortable.

We had a great stay, would come back anytime.

We had little time to enjoy the amenities this hotel had to offer but I must say the staff made a big impression! Staff were polite to a fault, helpful, cheerful, entertaining and never missed a beat.
Rooms were clean, quiet (yes, even though there was a small amount of noise from the construction) and stocked with tea, coffee and a small biscuit. Housekeeping would refill the kettle with a small amount of water daily. The hotel is in a central location. Breakfast buffet included a great selection of fruit, cereals, breads, eggs, sausage, bacon, and an omelette station. We enjoyed a buffet meal in the restaurant which offered a great selection of meats, vegetables (including the ever present butternut squash), salads, and desserts. Overall a very nice introduction to South Africa. A/C is not very efficient; this was our experience throughout South Africa - despite setting the A/C unit to the lowest setting the temperature though fine was never cool.

Room Tip: A/C units not very efficient - if you are there when the weather is warm you might want to choose a...

As other reviewers have said the Southern Sun is still undergoing some renovation. Not much while we were there , just some external building, and whilst is was outside our room there was little noise. The room we had was large and clean, the bathroom was a little tired but still fine.
The location is good, we walked to the V & A waterfront and Greenmarket square, each is about 20 minutes away, and there is a shuttle to the Waterfront if the weather isn't great.
There are a few restaurants close by, we sampled two and both were fine. Equally the food in the hotel is good, the buffet in the evening is plentiful, good choices and good quality. Breakfast also has a good selection and even though it was busy while we were there, rugby international, everything was always available.
The best thing about the hotel is the staff. Everyone is very helpful, from suggesting a place to visit to giving directions or picking a wine to go with the meal, it all comes with a smile. We couldn't have been happier, from the welcome drink to the 'no charge for parking' at checkout, the experience was very good and once the upgrade is complete I am sure it will be a top selection in Capetown.

I am a frequent visitor to Cape Town and this time around a couple of weeks ago, I decided to stay at the Waterfront (instead of The Cullinan). Though the property belongs to the same ownership Southern Sun and are adjoining each other, the experience here at Water Front hotel was different for me. The check-in process was quick, though I found the front desk people generally not as sharp as one would expect. My only dinner was a big disappointment, as it happened to be the Heritage Day and not much for a vegetarian. But the Manager noticed it and called the Chef to offer if anything can be done quickly. Nice gesture. Never got around to having dinner another night.

The room that I got was smaller, but had a very nice view. Had to request for an Iron whenever I needed. minor hassle, but not bad.

Getting a Taxi at this Hotel is tough. The Concierge desk is very very slow and I was told they dont have enough drivers to manage the fleet of cars, so one need to wait for 15 mts to get a cab. This was a surprise to me as if one chooses to walk for a minute around the building to The Cullinan hotel, there are 10-15 cabs waiting in line. I had walked each day of my stay to get a cab, instead of waiting.

Checking-out was a bit of a mess, as they had some extra items that needed to be billed to the host client rather than me. But sorted out quickly, but if I had not looked at my bill, would have paid.

will I return to this hotel next time? emm, may be if the other one did not have a room..
