“Beautiful hotel close to everything”
Reviewed 4 February 2014

My wife and I stayed there for 3 nights in October, en route back to the UK from Hluhluwe game reserve (soooo much better value than Kruger!)
There is absolutely nothing I could think of to fault the Derwent. The hotel itself is lovely with great facilities including a nice pool area. The room was a little on the small side but very nicely done out, very comfortable and a view of Table Mountain from the balcony - what more can you want.
Location wise, the Derwent is perfect. It is in a quiet road but 5-10 minutes (safe) walk to Long Street, going past a couple of nice bars and restaurants on the way.
And too much cannot be said for the staff at the Derwent. Vuyu especially was incredibly helpful and pleasant.
When we go back to CT there is only one place we would consider staying - thank you everyone at Derwent House.

Stayed here for two nights on a business trip and I wish that I did not have to leave! Everything was wonderful. From the friendly staff, service, food, accommodations, and sleep quality of the bed! I found myself looking forward to returning again one day with my family! By far the most enjoyable experience that I have ever had!

Our family of four spent five nights at Derwent House over the Christmas break and it could not have been a better experience. With two young teen boys we elected to stay in the family suite, and the room was everything that we had hoped it would be - and more. The finishings are beautiful and the small, well-equipped kitchen was a terrific bonus. At the outset, we debated whether it would be better for us to reserve two rooms instead of the family suite as our boys are older and need some space. In the end, the family suite was the perfect choice. The space is very well laid out and comfortable.

What really puts Derwent House over the top is the staff. Not only were they quick to handle every request, they also made terrific recommendations for restaurants and activities - and everything that they suggested was dead on perfect.

In terms of location, the neighborhood could not be more ideal. The hotel is situated in a quiet but beautiful residential area, but just a block or two from the city's best restaurants and shopping. Sitting at the pool or on the room's deck, you would have no idea that you are right in the middle of one of the world's most vibrant cities.

Finally, we can't imagine a trip to South Africa without a visit to this incredible city. Reading other reviews, we were a bit concerned about visiting during the height of the holiday season given the number of tourists that travel to Cape Town during the break. Our concerns were put to rest quickly. Yes, the city was alive with activity, but we never felt rushed or crowded (the only exception being a long wait to ascend Table Mountain). Cabs were plentiful, restaurants were accessible (with advance reservations), and it all felt very relaxed.

What we thought would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience has now become a priority for a return visit in the very near future. Derwent House, thank you for being a key part of such a remarkable trip.

It took me a while to write a review but better late than never. I stayed a week at Derwent in November 2013 and truly enjoyed my stay there. I spent a day in the hotel itself and the rest of the week in one of the apartments in the back.
While I found the hotel room a bit cramped, I loved the apartment, bright, spacious, well equipped, peaceful and modern.
What makes the Derwent truly remarkable is the sense of hospitality of the owners and staff. Vuyu, Dene and the rest of the team are just wonderful people, always willing to help and offer advices and suggestions.
Loved the afternoon "happy hour" at the Derwent as well with their nice selection of South African wines. As mentioned by other posters, the location is excellent, in a really quiet residential area of the city but at walking distance to restaurants and shops on Kloof.
Quick suggestion: Cafe Paradiso, down the road from Derwent is a gem of a restaurant.

Quite delightful. The ground foor of the main house is made over to living, dining, and kitchen areas. The kitchen is stocked with wine, cookies and other goodies. The design aesthetic is hip and stylish, but also inviting and uniquely African - and reflects the ethos of the owners and management. Outside, there is a pool, hot tub, and loungers. The service was both professional and personal, and the staff were always ready to advise on restaurants, tours, and so on. Breakfast was both varied and beautifully prepared. The overall experience is just as luxurious as in a top class hotel, but with the feeling of being in a home from home. I had booked it as a base from which to explore Capetown, but ended up wishing I had stayed longer and spent some of my time relaxing around the hotel.
The bottom line is that almost any hotel in South Africa in this price range will provide a high standard of accommodation and service. But this is one of the few that will provide a truly memorable experience.

I travel extensively for business and pleasure and Derwent House provided among the best service I have ever experienced. Smooth booking process with lots of information to help with planning and booking all our restaurant reservations started the experience. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly by the staff with rooms ready even though we arrived at noon. Little details like a mobile phone to use during our stay, a well stocked bookshelf with local guidebooks that could be borrowed, coffee, tea and snacks always available during the day and port and sherry in evening made the experience even more special. The large number of interesting and high quality choices for breakfast were also a bonus after eating too much eggs and bacon!

We were at Derwent House for four nights over New Years and could not have enjoyed our stay more. The staff was friendly, helpful with reservations, and attentive to every need we had. The breakfasts were delicious and the kitchen always stocked with snacks and drinks. It felt like our own home in the middle of Cape Town! We can't wait to come back and stay here again!
