“Don't stay anywhere else in Cape Town...”
Reviewed 2 February 2009

This was our third trip to Cape Town but the first time we'd stayed in a hotel. I can safely say that, from my initial email contact with Carol & Jo, right through to the tearful farewells (that was just me, admittedly!) we cannot fault ANYTHING about this fantastic hotel.

We had booked the last available room in the hotel (Room 7) and I'd tried to manage my own expectations by thinking that it might be a less than great room in a great hotel. Well, the room was perfect - french doors overlooked the fabulous pool area, the room was cool, comfortable and the wardrobes were big enough to store even my suitcase full of clothes (that's no mean feat!). Fantastic power shower was just perfect to wash off the 'stresses' (well, sun tan lotion!) of the day.

Carol, Jo and every single member of the fabulous Derwent House team, could not have been more friendly yet mindful of the fact that we were on holiday. Attentive, helpful and considerate without being 'in your face' - better service that in any 5 star hotel we've ever stayed in, anywhere in the world.

I LOVED the pancakes every morning (and am delighted to have been sent home with the recipe, thanks!) and the chance to chat with Carol & Jo about our restaurant experience of the previous night!

I could go on, and we have done just that to every one of our friends since we got back! Our tans might be fading but the memories of Derwent House are still fresh in our minds, and easily bring smiles to our faces.

We will be back, promise and, if you're full, we'll be rearranging our dates to ensure we can stay with you again - nowhere else in Cape Town could even come close.

Thanks ladies!

After a long flight (and two connections), Carol and Jo had organised a car to pick us up and after a no fuss check in and a quick tour we were safely straight into our comfort zone. The hotel is tastefully decorated and is a perfect base for activities based in and around CT. All of the staff made us feel very welcome and recommendations for restaurants were spot on. Full cooked breakfast or more healthy options every day and the food generally in CT means I need to lose a few pounds!

If you normally stay in corporate hotels as I do, Derwent House is a refreshing change and book early because this is not such a 'hidden' gem anymore. I'm glad I researched tripadvisor and other places and Derwent House deserves its accolades.

For my wife and I this was the perfect start to our honeymoon. Highly recommended.

We stayed at Derwent House for one week in early January for our honeymoon. It was the perfect hotel for us. The decor, art and overall atmosphere is very hip but there is absolutely no pretension. The service is excellent. The location is very good for walking to the sites within Cape Town. The neighbourhood is safe and great restaurants are within walking distance. When we wanted to take a break from touring, Derwent House was a lovely place to just hang out - the quiet pool area, the honour bar, the movie library...it is an easy place to feel at home.
We had such a great time exploring the Cape and Derwent House was the perfect home base. Thank you Carol, Jo and team for such a wonderful experience.

We stayed at this beautiful hotel in June 2008 to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary and I have finally got round to writing this long overdue review. I can only echo the sentiments of other guests. The hotel is beautiful with personal little touches to make your stay extra special. Some of the art on display is captivating and I must recommend the complimentary sherry, port and homemade cakes.

But the best part of the hotel is the warm welcome and friendly service you receive from Jo, Carol and their excellent team. I am quite sure our stay in Cape Town would not have been so memorable without their fantastic advice on restaurants and places to visit.

We booked Derwent from its fine reputation on TripAdvisor and it lived up to every expectation! Jo, Carol, and their entire staff made us feel at home for our entire visit over the New Year festive period! Our room overlooked the pool... it was very clean, quiet, and modern. (I tend to be a light sleeper and did not hear a thing while we were there). The staff was very attentive from the moment you woke up until they wished you good night. Jo helped us to pick restaurants in advance, made the reservations for us, and they called a cab for us each night... everything was taken care of so we could just enjoy ourselves. The location is perfect... only a few minutes to Camps Bay, Table Mountain, downtown, etc. We rented a car and were able to park it in Derwent's gated driveway. Breakfast was delicious and we had a variety of delicious options to choose from. We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Cape Town. (Jo and Carol even helped us to ship wine home and when we accidentally left some clothing in our room, promptly shipped it to us).

I cannot say anything more to boost this hotels rep. The place is exeptionally run by Carol/Jo. We had a Great few days there and the best thing to say is i was gutted to be leaving or that we didnt get to spend as much time as i wanted there!

The Staff are all nice and vhelpful. The breakie was lovely and prepared fresh. The Honesty bar is great and i munched down ALLOT of the Cakes and Mint sweets that were free ;)

Super place and well worth Top Spot...And long may it stay there.

A fabulous little boutique hotel, Derwent House’s strengths are threefold. First, it boasts incredible, personalised service from Jo and Carole and their team. Second, it has beautiful, comfortable interiors, with both the rooms and the common spaces decorated and furnished in a sleek, modern style to a very high standard, and a small but very pleasant pool and sun-loungers. Third, it is ideally located beneath Table Mountain, a few minutes drive from the lower cable car station, Lions Head and Signal Hill, while in the other direction the V&A waterfront is just 10 minutes away. Tamboerskloof itself is a safe, attractive neighbourhood, with several very good cafes and restaurants within walking distance. We’ve used TripAdvisor to choose hotels before but never bothered to write reviews afterwards. We had such a good time at Derwent we felt we had to write this review as a way of saying thanks to all the travellers whose recommendations had inspired us to choose it.

But when it comes to the basics - like breakfast, bedding, showers, climate control, Wi-fi or news from home - we don't compromise so you don't have to. At Derwent House, you're steps away from the hustle and buzz of Kloof Street, with its collection of superb restaurants, bars and trendy boutiques--and just a few further to the nightlife hub of Bree and Long Streets. Yet just a short car journey from the Table Mountain cable car, the beaches of Clifton or Camp's Bay, and the V&A Waterfront. There's nowhere more central -- but come and see for yourself.
