Wife and I left USA (MN) to visit SAA for vacation. I searched for places to stay in Capetown and discovered Derwent House reviews in TripAdvisor. The dominance of positive reviews attracted me - so much so that I questioned their authenticity. Skeptical, I continued looking - but kept coming back to those reviews. Now I'm writing one, a rarity - just as Derwent House turned out to be.

I liked the style in which Carol promptly answered all my email questions. Her answers were direct, specific & complete. She offfered appropriate suggestions when asked. (Have you ever been frustrated by someone who fails to answer a simple question or does so with "attitude?"). It was obvious Carol was a professional inn keeper. I booked 5 nights at Derwent in early March 2010, on the strength of the string of back and forth emails and, of course, the TripAdvisor reviews.

What's the bottom line? Simply: great location (we walked several times to the V&A Waterfront, only about 35 minutes away); really attractive/well appointed/comfortable property; helpful, pleasant staff; and last, but certainly not least, incredible breakfasts, including an unexpected brown bag breakfast on our departure (we left at 05:00).

I recommend Derwent House and applaud Carol and her staff. Definitely, we would stay there again. Terry & Judy from Lakeville, MN/USA

Super place; organised airport transfers for us, stored extra luggage whilst we were on safari; suggested restaurants etc, etc. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff at Derwent House and this is apparent from the moment you arrive. We had a good sized twin room and small courtyard. We loved the breakfasts; the cake and coffee/tea whenever you like; the honesty bar; comfortable lounge (gorgeous art work) - several restaurants nearby. We were out and about all the time, but there is a garden with pool and loungers if you have a "day in".

Derwent nice??? I had a terrible experience trying to reserve a night in July for the semifinal of the World Cup, and the reservations manager Carol [-] showed her true colors. I called and found out that there were rooms available. immediately I sent an email with my details. Then [-] indicated they preferred to assign these rooms to repeat guests, like I had not been one. Then realizing the big mistake she sent some emails rewriting history indicating the rooms were booked which was not true. Clearly they were trying to maximize income with the boom of the World Cup. Not a real friendly place. There are so many better places in Cape Town for the same or less money.

Wholly untrue and completely misleading
This review is a complete rewrite of history. The reviewer is motivated by anger and disappointment that he did not act quickly enough to secure a booking at Derwent House.
The reviewer called and was told we had two rooms available for the date he wanted but that he needed to send us an email quickly if he wanted to book – he waited over 24 hours before sending an email by which time the two rooms were booked.
Had he done as he said in his review and emailed immediately, he could have booked. Whilst we use feedback from guests and Tripadvisor reviews to help us improve our business, we are struggling to find anything we can learn from this experience.
We would rather this review were removed. How anyone can express a view like this about Derwent House without staying here is beyond us. Therefore it is with sadness and regret that we have to post this management response.

Well located between Table Mountain and the city centre, do not let the unpretentious frontage of Derwent House fool you; It is a delightful oasis of chic, boutique accomodation offering a very warm, proprietorial welcome, a charming, sun-trapped poolside area, intimate communal spaces and excellent staff. My wife and I stayed for 2 nights pre- cruise and 1 night post-cruise using 2 different rooms, 1 poolside room which was fine if a little small and a larger, balcony room which we preferred. We found the surrounding area quite safe and, although well away from the tourist -laden V&A Waterfront, within easy walking distance of local restaurants and bars.

My husband and I stayed at Derwent House back in March - and we truly had an amazing stay. The staff go above and beyond their duty to make your overall Cape Town visit a truly fantastic one. We felt extremely well looked after and every minute detail has been thought about. The rooms are very tastefully decorated, clean and comfy. We thought it was great value for money and would certainly reccommend it. One day we will return! Thank you Carol and team.

Situated in an area with good restaurants and bars within easy, and safe, walking distance, this stylish boutique hotel offers excellent, friendly service. The owners visit the premises each day and the charming manager ensures high standards are maintained at all times and that a relaxed atmosphere prevails. Breakfasts are a treat (try the speciality starter from the fridge). Although cabs are inexpensive we walked several times into the city centre and to the Green market. It was good to relax in the pool area on our return. Brenda. Stockport. Cheshire

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
In a city renowned for hospitality, Derwent House stands out as one of Cape Town's leading boutique guesthouses. Located in the heart of the vibrant Tamboerskloof/Gardens neighbourhood, this small hotel combines historic charm, contemporary Afro-chic style and all mod-cons for a uniquely Capetonian blend of ambience, warmth, and comfort. Our wonderful team completes the picture -- we go the extra mile for you and our guests leave as friends. We love colour and celebrate African design - you'll find it everywhere. But when it comes to the basics - like breakfast, bedding, showers, climate control, Wi-fi or news from home - we don't compromise so you don't have to. At Derwent House, you're steps away from the hustle and buzz of Kloof Street, with its collection of superb restaurants, bars and trendy boutiques--and just a few further to the nightlife hub of Bree and Long Streets. Yet just a short car journey from the Table Mountain cable car, the beaches of Clifton or Camp's Bay, and the V&A Waterfront. There's nowhere more central -- but come and see for yourself.
