Visited this bar on numerous occasions during my 10 days in CPT. Staff were great - always open to give advise. Even the gentleman in charge of the slots was a wealth of info!

Beer was always cold and fairly priced.

The kitchen is good when it is open - they need to get some consistency in their operating hours.

But I must add that when the kitchen was closed one night they recommended a local restaurant and we picked what we wanted and they sent a member of staff to pick it up - good service!

Just had the pleasure for a few beers. Great place. Extremely friendly staff. Greta happy hour prices.

However ..

Ordered breakfast and they forgot my order .... so no breakfast.

At dinner time kitchen closes as they wish, often before dinner or if they have special events. Although the food is good don't plan on dinner as it may not be available. Very strange and disappointing at dinner time.

This hotel could be worse, given the age. It's not totally disgusting. The staff are usually pretty nice, if not exactly on top of their jobs all the time. And the location is pretty great. That's where the strengths end.

It's primarily a backpackers, although there are some private rooms. I ended up staying there because I am a graduate student in Cape Town to do research for a month, and needed a place that was affordable and accessible to several spots by walking/public transport.

I'm one week into a month-long stay, and I can already say it was a mistake. Sure, I've stayed in worse hotels. Especially when I was younger and on vacation. But the "amenities" are WAY too thin for my business needs. The plumbing is unreliable. There is exactly one power outlet in the room, and that is taken up with the TV and a cheap, non-working lamp. Plugging in my laptop is a mission. Plugging in an iron is impossible.

The walls are thin, letting in noise from the street and the bar downstairs most nights. As I write this, there's some art opening happening on my floor, which the management told me about yesterday, which has brought not only crowds (which they told me to expect) but drum circles and loud guitars (which they didn't). The staff are generally friendly--although one of them first responded to news of my mugging (in Joburg, not to worry) with a question about whether I would be able to pay--but it takes about three tries to get, say, an extra blanket.

The worst part of all of this is that the price is not that much below what is available in many other establishments in the same area. I got a good deal because of the length of my stay--which is why I chose it--but at the time of writing the standard rate is ZAR450/night, in the middle of August (i.e., winter). Luxury hotels are available for 25-50 rand more a night.

All in all, it's not a disastrous place, and it's certainly fine for the young backpacker or no-frills traveler. Or at least it would be if its regular prices were about 100-150 rand cheaper per night. As it stands, it's a rip-off.

Hi,

Stayed here for 5 days last week. I was pretty wary due to the rate for a room with shower and toilet - R 200.00. However, was pleasantly surprised. Very clean. Shower is literally encased right in the room as is the toilet and basin. Reminds me of Hong Kong and China. But they had plenty of hot water. Mattress was new but they need some new sheets as they kept coming off the bed during the night. Had fridge which would hold plenty of beer etc. as well as TV. Did not use either. Staff and the owner were just great and there is wireless which was handy as was there on biz. They have a very cool Victorian bar on the ground floor which is the centre of activity with very low priced drinks. My mates from CPT had never been there and now going to make it one of their Friday locals. If you are booking try to take room on the top floor as the bar does generate some noise. All in all great value for money but do not expect the Ritz! Also bring your own towel.
